My daughter's hard-up primary has a .11b AP somwehere in a main building and USB wireless gadgets for a few PCs in a separate nursery/reception building on the other side of the playground. These PCs will sometimes get 11Mb if the USB thingy is in just the right place, but these PCs usually seem to be running at 1Mb. Obviously needs a little switch/cabling in the nursery but I think if they have a wireless bridge with directional attenna at each ends they might get at least a consistent 11Mb and probably more from .11g. Has anyone done a cheapish wireless bridge with external directional attennae recently? If so what kit did you use etc?

Hmm.. if the school website is on your LAN then you could try making a "custom user type" cloned from their normal one, but amended to have a bogus proxy server (e.g. 127.0.0.1) and a single proxy override entry for your school website. Worth a try.

Don't recall what I did.. possibly an untimely Cancel.. but when I did my my first test E2K7-> E2K7 SP1 I managed to get it in a mostly uninstalled state. I noted down this message (think it came from the GUI when I tried to install SP1 again): "The Exchange files are not installed, but the backup settings registry key is present. Only build to build upgrade mode is available." Which AFAICT was what I wanted it to do! Ultimately the command line setup.com /mode:upgrade did the trick. As in XML 6.0? Are you trying to install that independently or is it just one part of some big/long install process? If the latter then try putting XML 6.0 on before you start.

Install the MS SMTP Service on the box, allow 127.0.01 to relay to [wherever you've got Liberum sending it now] and turn on logging. Set Liberum to use that to relay the mail. Look at the logs, if the mail doesn't turn up at the SMTP Service and there's no clever AV getting in the way then go back to looking at Liberum. Been a while but I've run a thoroughly hacked (to just a little piece) last official release Liberum on a CC3 server. I put it in in a folder under the RM default Intranet site, made it an App, set the default page, gave the account IUSR_[something] NTFS change on the database folder and it worked. However amongst other things I rewrote the mail sending to use CDOSYS and that's probably because the original code was buggy/broken. Which Liberum are you running? The last official rel. or one of the subsequent custom bug-fixed ones?

Hmm.. well.. if anyone does have a credible business case for upgrading entire schools to Vista and/or O2K7 I'd be interested to see it. Interesting to see the "Don't need Becta to tell us..." stuff. Me neither and I suppose crap techs who might benefit wouldn't read it in the first place. But techs obviously aren't the only intended audience and it's always useful to have relatively accessible "official" docs kicking around that support your opinion.

I've seen the original mirror tasks not running. Solution was to make a new mirror task - you should only need to set the location of the mirror and the schedule (no guarantees but for me the credentials magically default to the right thing). Don't know about the client issue but the mirror contains file for zillions of different versions of clients. Mirror update download failures for sk_dets.mcs are a regular sight in the logs (ditto for spamcom.dll, su.dll) and that doesn't usually break things i.e. if the mirror task is successful the clients are usually happy downloading from the mirror. Renaming, remaking and repopulating the mirror folder via a manual kick-off of the mirror task is all I can think of, but you say you've done that. Have you also tried un & reinstalling a couple of the clients just in case the trouble is there? Or have you tried stopping your IIS and getting a client to update to see if it still has the problem when that (presumably) falls back to the vendor's update site?

The only message there is the vendor's "We're up to date and cutting edge, oh yes indeedy, now please give us all your money". If people are daft enough to take that as a recommendation on what to do to their networks then.... Were there any server 2K8'S to be found (RTM build is apparently just a month away)?

Nope but just to get it out of the way, do you have scavenging turned on? If they go missing again just restarting the netlogon service should be enough to get those records back. But the curious bit is why it hadn't already done that i.e. I thought a DC's netlogon was supposed to register the DNS records all over again every hour (which is why you don't need to worry about these critical records being scavenged)?

For me the word is "realistic" based on a decade or so working on what I suppose is a kind of MIS system, albeit a bit bigger than a typical schools, with lots of interoperability, data interchange, formats and protocols to deal with or make. Was working with the same concepts/tech I read here at the turn of the century i.e. education isn't exactly trail-blazing. Interoperability standards were a regular feature, with occasional involvement in their making. Anyway sometimes these things work, sometimes they get bogged down for the kind of reasons I mentioned. I wish this initiative well, but couldn't pass by without asking something that was likely to result in an interesting response. What I don't know much about is where you get that Edugeek consensus? I imagine most want everything to be admin-trouble-free and as interoperable as possible. But do you care much about the details of how product A talks to product B?

Ok.. but what stops this one going down that not uncommon path where pretty much every vendor with an investment in an existing solution basically turns up to fight for that to be the standard (so they don't have to reimplement) and everyone's special little extras all have to be crammed in somewhere thus making the solution a bit of an ugly compromise. Followed of course by the inevitably imperfect specs which get implemented slightly differently, leading directly to pain for end users (not least when vendors then blame the other one for their faulty intepretation)?

No, it's a simpler case of doing it in the GUI. You change the paths somewhere in the properties for the store in Exchange Manager and that does all the service stopping, moving & starting for you.

Is there any client-side jscript for that site? Could be some browser specific code (FF's copes, IE's doesn't).

I thought 32-bit apps generally use significantly more memory when running on 64-bit OS which undermines a fair bit of the case for moving to a 64-bit TS for more memory. Obviously a different story where both OS and some big app are 64-bit, most the apps a TS user is likely to be running are 64-bit etc.

Making them virtual suggests you are, but I'm not entirely sure if you're agreeing with my conjecture i.e. that you'll typically need to scale out to two Standard 4GB TS machines (as opposed to scaling up to one Enterprise 8GB TS machine).

Haven't looked too hard at why, but MS say 8GB is about tops for E2K7 which is well within the X64 Standard edn. limit. I know nothing about large TS, but imagine the limiting factor might be the 2GB kernel mode address space. If that is true how far can you push users/memory size before that starts hurting? If that's not true, what's the story?

I know that too because they put RC1 up for public download last week. But there's only so much time in the day for installing/configuring another release (twice each time, because I keep doing a Core as well). Do you know if anything worth looking at has changed since RC0?

Don't know about 11D but for previous versions, BE typically interacts with VSS to get a shadow copy of whatever made. Then something bad happens and those VSS copies don't get cleaned up. IME they always show up in Explorer's Shadow Copies tab (r-click any drive). If you see them and you're lucky, then restarting the still running Volume Shadow Copy service actually works and that cleans up the old shadow copies. However sometimes the VSC service won't stop and you need to restart the server. I'd start with a: vssadmin list writers If you see any with an Error status, get that VSC service restarted one way or another.

Yeah I've been arguing that for E2K7 but that was because a) you lost functionality relative to E2K3, b) when Exchange breaks, it sometimes does that rather well. I'm not so sure for Server. W2K3 no SP has been fairly solid e.g. RM skipped SP1 for all their CC3 boxes and went direct to SP2 in early summer. I personally got hurt by that (someone's CC3 box had a very exotic serious issue that took truckloads of time to find and had been [bleeping] fixed by SP1), but as systems go it was well-behaved. The bits of W2K8 you really care about are mature tech not complete rewrites. So far for me, many of the new bits just work and I want them yesterday: - Being able to routinely stop AD to run an integrity check or whatever on the database (as opposed to having to wait until 5PM a week on Tue to restart in AD restore mode). - Task Scheduler - the multiple triggers (inc. Event log events), actions, conditions etc. Serious 2K8 admins, especially those with lots of servers to care for, will be able to do a lot of very useful magic here. - The host firewalling. F/W console looks like a proper one & the holes for different "server roles" not opened until you install the role. - Server Core. Even if that idiot figures out how the talk to the box they still won't be able to install all the usual dross they use to break critical servers (before breaking it even more trying to fix it). - Remote Application talking RDP over TLS into a TS Gateway, subjected to connection & resource policies before being relayed to a TS. Easy to setup, works as advertised. -Server Manager where you're supposed to do pretty much all your routine config/admin (and can do some extremely geeky monitoring/diags) is actually quite good. Vista Explorer and the 57 varieties of Event log is horrible though. Still slowly working through the other bits.
