Thanks, but you've accidently written a little bit of that in Tangentese so some more on each point: 1) I just watched (bits of) this TechEd presentation and that says it's opt-in without then with passwords this year, and MS will start scheduling upgrades for everyone else at the "beginning of 2013" and it will take ~ 12 months to chew through us all. That's enough info for me then i.e. there's no credible threat of having to do related things in time I don't expect to have in the next few months. 2) When registering a Live@Edu tenancy we just had to chew through filling out a couple of web-form pages with credible school details stuff. Will the 'purchase' of the free A2 plan just be more of the same, or will we have to repeatedly nag real live people e.g. Heads/Whatever to do something? 3) So those education specific SharePoint templates will be present, available to use, out-of-the-box so to speak?

I've just read an Upgrade Announcement from MS. If you know for sure (or happen to be @jamesbmarshall) then: 1) Very roughly when might these upgrades happen for UK/Euro Live@Edu tenancies? 2) The free-for-edu A2 plan apparently won't be 'on' by default. What's involved in turning that on e.g. is it proper paperwork that has to be signed/faxed and so on? 3) Once upon a time MS did talk about providing education specific sharepoint templates. Will that happen, or is that aspect now "exactly the same" as Office365 for Enterprises?

One key point about MDT is that the Stand Client TS template is multipurpose and if you're simply formatting the disk and throwing an OS image on it etc. then you can customise the TS accordingly e.g. amongst other things I deleted the entire State Capture branch, and inside the State Restore branch removed Restore User State, Restore Groups and the Capture Image sub-branches. If it's not attempting to do something redundant to your purposes in the first place then that "something" won't ever fail.

I think a better question is does the open source have to be for a particular platform/cause? Pragmatically MS have contributed an enormous amount of non-trivial examples/samples that have often gone directly into open source projects for stuff in MS-land.

Consider the (original) source. It was also seriously unfeasible: To do that you could either stop one process starting another which couldn't possibly happen, or perhaps take away the shell32 API for talking to LNK files so future start menu code can't find out what to run (pointless because you could write your own code to pick a LNK file apart with or without reading the MS spec for them).

Me neither... if anything is going to tell a user to go away when they click it then I want it disappeared wherever possible to avoid unecessary user frustration/confusion. If you don't then there is far too much "Access denied.." "Your Administrator has disallowed..." for my liking.

I do wish MS would RTM stuff at Easter instead of autumn. Unless anyone knows better, 2012 is due in the "autumn" and I wouldn't use it in production until a few months afterwards - so that's after xmas next year and more often than not for obvious reasons, next summer.

The story rings a bell: I think that adapter might be one once used for tape drives in some model of RM server and if it is the same I did download those drivers from somewhere... never used because a new (supported) SCSI card seemed like a better plan. It might be a day or two before I figure out if I still have them though.

I don't have my Stuff[tm] to quickly reference, but offhand if the LDAP path is correct (Path) then it's could well be the Name it doesn't like. One of those properties, probably Name, gets used for the AD user object CN and there's a comma in it which might lead to some code failing to make sense of an object path like: CN=Bloggs,Fred,OU=12 Users,OU=Students,DC=....

Haven't got a clue about combining the source for Office, Project and Visio, but it's probably asking for trouble. I would make three separate applications, then a fourth configured in the new application wizard as *application group* - add the first three to that in the order you want them to install, and then add the application group to the task sequence.

I need a couple of cheap+cheerful wireless USB adapters to temporarily connect PCs to 802.11g wireless. They need to work on XP and must work prelogon so they get GPOs. They will probably need a little cable (possibly with little stand) to get the atenna in the "open". Anyone know of a make you can buy right now for not very much that does the above?

I don't know that switch/model and it might be cleverer, but I did play with some HP switch or other and it definitely couldn't do that. You could have say VLAN1 going out to the net via Router1 and VLAN2 going out to the net via Router2 but *only if* VLAN1 doesn't need to talk to VLAN2 or vice-versa, for instance you don't configure an IP for VLAN2 on the switch and set DHCP to hand our Router2's IP as the gateway for devices on VLAN2.

What's complaining about duplicates? Windows logs an event when it detects a conflict and that contains the MAC of the conflicting device (or at least that was true for XP/2003). Having got that, if the OUI doesn't tell me what+where it is I've gone to the switches to find out what port the MAC "lives on", starting from the switch the complaining device is plugged into and following it wherever it leads.

I dragged myself off Mt. Kenya with altitude sickness as a teen.. bitterly, bitterly disappointed but you have to be seriously ignorant/mad to risk pulmonary edema etc. Have also had the dying broken person on a titchy english mountain experience and have been too close to that myself elsewhere. Lazy Sunday morning recovering from the night before then went 'fun' swimming with Sprogette & tOH, only unlike pretty much everyone else ("standing waist-deep in chlorine chucking stuff to their mates"[1]) we did real fun stuff involving at least some real swimming. Highlight for me was a spell in one of the non-fun 'fast' lanes when some macho bloke with all the flash kit the next lane along clearly tried to beat Sprogette (aged 8) over a length of front crawl and she slaughtered him. Forget having to live with compulsive oppositional disorder, kids can be *so* rewarding sometimes. Does GD need or have one of those CMDBs? I suspect the idea is that folk with networks can readily help a "police inspector" i.e. their long held Seven Year Snitch[tm] (preferably longer) data retention ambitions, where we log eveything in minute detail on the off chance they might need to investigate some serious crime with roots going back that far.

Well you won't get me spending my time making reservations for anything that isn't in traditional "static vs reservation" territory: The premise of computers is to make stuff easier, not to provide you with more ways to use people's time performing trained monkey work. It hasn't yet, but if my "risk analysis" suggested there was a significant chance of needing to map IPs to MACs in some serious investigation then I'd just turn on DHCP logging to record the assignments and their timestamps, and should that ever need mapping to a specific machine/serial just go look in the DB with the *automagic* h/w inventory (via SCCM, Spiceworks, whatever).

I think school kids aren't that interested in using school e-mail. The larger issue (discussed seriously in several places now) is the short messages and increasingly short attention spans re. pretty much any issue you care to mention. Ideas *that matter* tend to take quite a bit of text to explain/debate and very few can be done & dusted within 24 hours. You see this so often nowadays: Something[tm] emerges.. twitter burns with howls of shallow outrage.. tomorrow the issue is the still there, but the protestors are not.

Pining for the fjords: Get yourself up a mountain there and you likely won't see anything but the awesome view, in particular you won't see any manglers coz they'll have spent the last six months on a longitudinal risk study on the potential harmful effects of the Northern Lights on people at altitudes exceeding 2000m and won't make a formal decision on that until Q1 2017. Dunno, pay me a £60,000 salary and I'll get myself booked on some courses where they'll tell me the answer.

Perhaps, but these folk officially start work on the first day of term in an **already set up school** so they're knocking theory into pragmatic shape and if that genuinely takes 17 manglers for 200 kids then I'm a Norwegian Blue parrot.

I've seen (up close) two Primaries merge into one new school over the summer with 400 kids with one new head, one deputy, a helpful govenor and one person from the LA on the case. The first three still had normal duties to perform beforehand. No way it requires 17 senior posts to simultaneously run a school with just 200 kids and do [whatever] in order to prepare for some day they'll know about well in advance when they might have more kids. If that's really how it is, if the system really has created enough superfluous tat to keep them all occupied, then Western civilisation is more [bleeped] than I thought.

There's obviously a minimum number of manglers required to get a school 'off the ground', but you're simply not going to convince me that a school needs the full contingent of manglers like that when a) it's only got ~200 kids, b) you'll have reasonably good notice about significant changes to that number. People doing real valuable work are being kicked out of jobs whilst this lot will be twiddling their thumbs and inventing pointless Kafkaesque procedures that likely won't survive collision with the reality of a credible number of kids. That's it's been done like this for years is not an argument - those were shameless, decadent, ruinously expensive years with the bills postponed for my/our kids lifetimes - stuff like this just needs to *stop*.

Probably, but that just means the insanity is more endemic that I imagined. I can't imagine anyone spending their money (as opposed to the tax payers) paying for a bunch of staff that clearly aren't required for at least the next year.. possibly never. Just what are the compelling reasons for that?

The current Private Eye mentioned this interesting management structure for a free school (you just *have* to read it). Absolutely, that is my biggest complain about public sector: Everyone and their dog seems to be hell-bent on everyone counting/measuring things (they can blather about in too many decision-free meetings) *that don't matter*, which I assume is because too many manglement folk are too witless to look at [anything at all] and sift out the key stuff in terms of strategy, organisation and employee efficiency. The ratio of truely productive work to 'housekeeping' is appalling.
