Thanks - This is what i thought these days one big raid 10 - it's what i did for my recent mail server exchange and exchange logs on OBR10 (I still stuck the O/S on a Raid1 though) but with SQL the concept of seperate raids was not just access speed it's the fail point of a raid, if it fails you have to recover the whole server i know it's unlikly to fail but it does happen, as if its on separate raids then only need to recover which ever raid fails and with SQL it's more likely be the raid that holds the DB that fails and pretty easy to recover with good backups. And 3s-gtech Thanks - this is why i was thinkin 2x Raid 10's almost the benefit of OBR10 but with the protection of the O/S and Logs on one and DB and tempDB on the other. Tobe totally honest i would of spec-ed up a better server storage wise one that could hold more disks for starters and then SSD the **** out of it lol - but i get "heres a server make a new SQL out of it" Any more advise would be good - i have time to play but not too much

Building a new SQL server now i have been provided a Dell R620, 2x 8Core Xeons, 128Gb Ram, Perc710m with 1Gb Cache Controller It has 6 558Gb SAS drives but are only 10K so im looking at replacing these with 15K drives and the server has 8 disk slots Obviously Server 2016 Stn & SQL 2016 Std now im looking to get best i can from it. it's coming from an old oracle DB and being converted to SQL (out sourced that task lol) approx 40Gb so im thinking of 8x 300Gb 15K disks and become mindbent on the options to do it all Option 1 Raid 10 all 8 disks and then just partition into for disks for O/S, Logs, DB & TempDB? Option2 4 disks Raid 10 for O/S & TempDB 4 disks Raid 10 for DB & Logs or any variant anyone would advise like O/S and logs on said Raid Set Option3 2 disks Raid 1 for O/S 2 disks Raid 1 for Logs 2 disks Raid 1 for tembDB 2 disks Raid 1 for DB (No hot spares here i know) Any other config you'd like to advise

The OU the IT Tech's use have blocked inheritance for GPO's for all the lock down stuff they do run a few GP's but they are just drive mappings, IE proxy and default domain policy - I will give your idea a try and see if it makes a difference, there maybe a nice hidden GP setting in one of those. Thanks will let you know

Hi this issue is driving me nuts as i can't see what is wrong? Most of our servers are 2012 R2 and what i find is if I login to the majority of the our servers with the main account domain\Administrator then on any drive, folder or file including sub folders and files i can right click go to properties and the dialog box shows fine no issues all tabs are shown. but if i login the same servers as a user account that is a member of the Domain Admins or even Domain Enterprise group and do the same right click properties thae dialog box shows with one thing missing the "Security Tab" this is the same effect on all servers on the same domain, same for PC's on the same domain too. This means our team of I.T techs that only have access to the their own "domain admin" account can't set permissions or make amendments to current permissions, it dont matter if the servers a DC, file server or any other type of server the issue is the same accross the lot (same issue on domain admin accounts that access network drives from a PC the security tab is missing) I've looked into this and some people point this at UAC issues, i can say this has been disabled on 2 of the servers and reboots given, still the same issue. I've looked at the local policy and checked that UAC has been set this way Clint Boessen's Blog: You don't currently have permission to access this folder and still no change. if you have questions to ask or any advice please let us know Thanks

PC to Interactive Display (TV) USB connection issue
MuttsNutts replied to MuttsNutts's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
I tried it at both ends, with different length cables etc all mixed results.....drove me nuts and Thanks "SMARTEdTrainer" I will take a look - will also call it in as a snag to the installers, daft thing is it's been in 2 years and was ok when first installed, they been out twice to it and replace leads etc get it working then after a few months it stops again with this same issue - maybe thinks the TV is a duff one? -
PC to Interactive Display (TV) USB connection issue
MuttsNutts replied to MuttsNutts's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Hi thanks the face plate is just really a converter from USB B to A female so then we plug a USB male A to male A into the faceplate basic circuit board that clips into the trunking....... no active power to it either (we have opted for better faceplates on some of our later installs and this issue doesn't seem to happen as much if at all - so this maybe the answer? but again we are using different TV's too one thing I have noticed if I use a cable direct from PC to TV that's longer than 3m it don't work, this tells me the TV only supports low speed USB connections? and 3m is nothing with a TV that's wall mounted. Most of our AV installs are done by Roche AV - mostly pretty good just these niggling issues that bug you -
Hi I'm having issues with the distance between the installed interactive TV's to the PC's, display is fine as HDMI signal can travel some distance my issue is with the USB distance to enable touch operations on the TV. What I have is from the TV's USB B connector a cable going into the wall cavity and pops out via the trunking then plugs to a face plate distance about 1.6m then from the face plate to the PC using a 2M USB cable. yes this breaks the 3m total low speed USB limit but all cables are listed high speed as is the TV and the PC is using USB 2 so we should be able to get 5m total, yet touch operations do not work, The pc does detect a USB connection but not enough for it to recognise it as a device. I have tried active USB cables, a powered USB Hub, even looked into USB over Ethernet. yet if I use just a direct cable 2m or even a 3m one direct from the PC to the TV it works no problem (yes the faceplate has been replaced also) TV is a Phillips 65" and the PC is running a Asus motherboard using it's on board USB sockets (yes tried a new PC too) I have around 20 or so in this config and most work fine this way just a few show this issue from time to time. what I'm asking is does anyone else have this issue or what setup they have in there classrooms if using TV's (our older promethean boards don't seem to care the length of the USB cable some have like 10m ones and no issues) my next step was to buy PCI express USB card that has a separate power connecter from the PC's power supply to see if this solves the issue.........

PowerShell HELP - Need to change just server name in home folder path
MuttsNutts replied to MuttsNutts's topic in Scripts
It did it again it put a space in ???? must be when I quote the script here it is in plain text Import-Module ActiveDirectory $oldServerName = "-OLDSERVER" $newServerName = "NEWSERVER" [array]$AllUsers = Get-ADUser -LDAPFilter '(name=*)' -SearchBase "OU=StaffTest,DC=MYDOMAIN,DC=ac,DC=uk" -Properties HomeDirectory foreach($user in $AllUsers){ if(($user.HomeDirectory.ToString()).contains($oldServerName)){ $homeDirectory = ($user.HomeDirectory.ToString()) -replace $oldServerName, $newServerName Set-ADUser $user.DistinguishedName -HomeDirectory $homeDirectory } } EDIT: it still did it in plain text HA HA can't edit an image can you lol -
PowerShell HELP - Need to change just server name in home folder path
MuttsNutts replied to MuttsNutts's topic in Scripts
Oh well time is a great problem solver I've only gone and done it myself - can't believe I didn't spot it earlier. Me using LDAPfilter (well actually suggested by my colleague) going to punch them now Anyway this is the working one that does target OU's (Note it also does sub OU's so I can now just aim this at my OU called Staff and it will do all sub OU's under it) !!!!!!! BIG NOTE HERE: It is however case sensitive on the server names so if you have some users with mixed upper and lower case letters set as the current server name it wont touch those so it's probably worth checking maybe an AD export to CSV just to check or make multiple scripts with all the varied cases LOL Thanks for looking Sorry Sephiroth Yes the space is a mistake - no idea how I managed to get a space in there I only C & P -
Hi Looking at your script I can see you have set the home path as \\SERVERNAME\STUDENTS\2016INTAKE\$USERNAME so this means your usernames match the home folder name? You can simply set permissions on user home folders via AD on mass simply selecting all students within an OU - right click - properties - profile - ticking home folder box - selecting the required drive letter your case H and type in \\SERVERNAME\STUDENTS\2016INTAKE\%USERNAME% Click apply and ok - you may get a message explaining about setting permissions if so click yes on this, even when you do it this way if the home folder does not exist it actually creates it also not script I know but hope it helps? Thanks

Hi I'm migrating both our staff and students to new file servers for there home drives, now I've done the data migration via robocopy and seen as all our students logon names match the home folder name I simply did the change on mass in AD by selecting all students - properties - profile - ticking home folder box - selecting the required drive letter and typed in \\newservername\student$\%username% bang job done works a treat. Now the issue I have is our staff, as most of the usersnames did match home folder names at one point - but some get married and change names and then theres the old old staff that have been here donkeys years have completely different usernames to home folder name ratio - so I can't on mass change in AD as I would have a lot of staff not being able to connect or find their data. so searching around I came across the very thing that will do the job for me via powershell: Taken from https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/289126-how-can-i-change-only-the-servername-in-the-home-folder-path-in-ad now editing the server names and running this does in fact just change the server name but it rips through all users in the domain yes even students (ok yea I could run this and then once its done manually on mass change students again using the method at the top) but that's messy and not a way I'd like to do it. what I'm asking is I'm looking to target OU's in AD mainly the Staff OU or even sub OU's (so departments ) so far I have got it to this to with some searching and help from another tech in my dept Obviously it doesn't work as is Now if I manually run it does give me the details for just the users in that OU StaffTest I think the issue is with the Array? so this: [array]$AllUsers = and this: foreach($user in $AllUsers){ I'm not very good at powershell its a learning curve for me so anyone that can master this I'd really appreciate this or if not find me another method I can just change the server name on mass via OU selection as I have around 500 staff users to change this for. Thanks

Thanks LosOjos I have tried trial and error and just can't get rid of it, I have already tried what you sugested and what that does is change text color on the next page when you login from white to the dull green. the webpage seems tobe transparent with white as the backdrop then layerd up in stages with the colours the original page shows for example #597652 #000000 between A and B as different colours i changed it to match to colour thinking it would gradient to and from the same colour making a solid colour bit it didnt? i even went deeper thinking if i changed #597652 #597652 to #597652 but that just messed the whole thing up any more help -
I have a webpage thats setup by the VDI software i use vWorkspace now the custom options are limited you get colour choice, and add logos thats about it. the problem i have is the gradients of the colours i dont want to use gradients i just want solid colours. heres the code: and heres the result: ( i have blanked off my logos) i have drawn on black arrows to show the white and black grdients at the top and the sides also if you look the fine white diagonal strips on the top and bottom bands. I want the whole thing in this colour #5F604C apart from the bold green strips and the logon box can anyone help?

GOOD LUCK it's very hard to get it to work on every single mobile device O/S as they all like different ways of doing it or just don't support it, I'm not sure it's possible with NPS at ALL? But if you search the web alot say use a wpad file with the proxy details in it they also say you can put that file in different places on your network again for different O/S's it tends to work for some but not others if any at all. I spent days trying this and it was just too hard to get it to work on so many different devices, I had iPhones, Samsungs, Nokia, blackberrys, LG's the list is huge some it would work and others if didn't, so another way was to get DHCP to issue the or a IP that belonged to the proxy server this was only if you are wanting internet access to the mobile devices? again this only works if your proxy server supports it and unathenticated it's a cheat way of a transparent proxy, best done on a VLAN too! In the end I had to install a transparent proxy to get it working effectivly - I used IP COP on a spare PC, just put 3 NIC's in it, one for internal network one for external WAN (went in our internet VLAN) and one for the BYOD wireless VLAN I get students to authenticate upon connecting to the wireless then it allows them on the web without the need for proxy details - all logged and filterd by IP COP. a little off your topic but it might help you???

ardvark is right to say check your DC's are replicating ok, I'd try to see if you can spot a pattern, upon the PC's that don't get the GP find which logon server they used, run "set" from a CMD find the LOGONSERVER= Also a GPRESULT /R to find which server issued the group policy to that PC. Compare that to PC's that have no issues then go from there it's usually easy to find the troublesome DC. in the mean time it's not a fix but a workaround is to get all your PC's to run a GPUPDATE /FORCE upon logon via your logon script - messy but would get you by till you find the culprit DC.

Yea I used the T10 models too this has a built in option to connect to different VDI products vWorkspace connector included very basic setup then auto launch to windows desktop was done at the broker (server) and yea running 2012 with hyper v with a 2012 broker using version 8 of vWorkspace and latest version of the Fog Light add on, even printers and USB redirection to the thin client can be configured, Dell community site has some very good guides on how to set it all up and various custom guides too, can't find the link yet as on iPad but will post it another time for you. and thanks Achandler for the mention of Thinkoisk for the bios level conversion as I also looked at this but was quoted £40 per pc for it using the igell software all looked over the top for our needs

Yes I we have done it from a Wyse Thin Client running thin O/S with the vWorkspace connector configerd to auto connect to the farm and run an RDP session to a VDI desktop, it's flash memory in the wyse so takes 6 seconds to boot to login screen once logged in with AD creds VDI desktop is there ready for use in 8 more seconds so from powering on the wyse to useable desktop 14 seconds which is rapid, if using a Linux O/S with the vworkspace client it's longer as the O/S and shell is on a HDD so more like 2 mins boot logging and desktop in a further 30 seconds, it's even longer if using windows with thin shell running.......

Hi we are currently testing Dell's vWorkspace (what used tobe Quest) it looks very good and fast has a vast range of thin client options that will work with it, PXE BOOT & thin O/S using wyse terminal's or iGells etc......it's a cheeper option as it does not require SAN storage for the VDI images to be stored. Just orderd two servers and a basic licence for now as it has alot of fine tuning to get it perfect for our enviroment - will put it out in a few area's first like hot desk places LRC, Staff Room Hot Desk, student Syber Cafe etc..... if it proves worth will aim to replace classroom PC's next year.

Thanks Dezt - your script works a treat for me I just needed to mod the 3 to a 4 as use four digits for our room names...... P.S I know who you are ex Lanway man ;-) lol

Hi this is my first post so HI to you all, I'm an an IT Admin at a college and we are running 5 TMG & ISA firewall/proxy servers and what im after is a nice piece of software that can test them from one location mainly my PC just somthing i can configure all the IP's or host names of all 5 of my proxies click a button and it tests that traffic can go through each of them. Currently I'm running a VBS script that changes the proxy setting in IE to what ever i have preconfigued then launches a webpage to google. this is a pain and slow and alot of clicks...... I have looked and can't seem to find much out there for this, as searching for a "Proxy Tester" all you get back is sites for external web proxies so kids can get on facebook and youtube from college or school etc...... a real pain finding what im after can any one help? Thanks
