Cheers guys. I've been making a list of bits to add to the toolkit. Think I am going to go with a smaller one and make the rest up with other things such as USB DVD drive, USB memory stick etc. My next question is... I am setting up a receipt on A5 paper so that if I take someones computer away, I can leave them a receipt of exactly what I've taken. I want to create a duplicate of the hand written receipt. Can I buy something like carbon sheets so that I can make immediate duplicates or do I have to buy a pre-printed duplicate book? Where can I buy carbon sheets from? Regards

Hi, We're not actually back at school just yet so I've been doing a bit of personal research. I am looking to start-up my own mini business, fixing PCs in the local area. Before I start actively advertising I would like to get things in place and one of the things I would like to get is a decent toolkit. I just need one for general PC maintenance and with a little extra room to add a few of my own tools. Has anyone got one of these? If so what do you think of them: Videk Online Has anyone got anything different, any recommendations? If not, has any one got a recommendation for a good carry case so that I can purchase tools separately? Regards

AD Integration - saves students/staff having multiple passwords SIMS Integration Server sits in your school - doesn't matter if the Internet goes down, you can still use the VLE in school. Also speed - much quicker at uploading/downloading your files Excellent tech. support Allows staff to add their own content or to purchase content from SCORN compliant third parties - normally you only get one or the other with other VLEs. Easy to use - saves one person having to manage the whole site. Bits can be 'given out' to others to use. Take a look, well worth it.

I didn't want you to reply with obvious answers as I think I already know these What I would like is working examples of what others have done/used in their schools. BTW I'm in Kent but willing to travel to see the Holy Grail of I.T. Support

Hi, I'm interested to hear from anyone who knows of a school or organisation (anywhere) that has excellent I.T. provision and I.T. Support. In the same way that some of our teaching staff spend time in other schools my team and I try to do the same with local schools but really I'm after the name(s) of schools or businesses with excellent support in the aim that myself or my team can go and visit to pinch ideas. Also, what would you guys suggest are the key to good I.T. Support departments? Not so much the obvious, e.g. "good customer service skills" but more like, a well managed piece of help desk software, remote control software for teachers to control student Internet access etc. I look forward to your responses.

I would take a serious look at Frog (Frog - Learning Platform, Personalised Learning, VLE, Digital Environment) Their VLE, which we have fairly recently purchased, links into your MIS system, SIMS or CMIS. It also links in with Active Directory so your users will not need an additional username and password to remember. Because of the links with your MIS, you can give students and parents access to timetables and attendance data. Another huge benefit is that the server is housed in your own school so even if your Internet connection is lost you can continue using it. In addition of course it will be far faster than buying in a VLE from a company that hosts it elsewhere. As for creating your own Moodle or Sharepoint install, it does make sense however that with a bought in product you will get the support that goes along with it. Of course this is very useful if you get hit by a bus as the school will still be able to use the system! If you want any more information please e-mail me.

Don't forget if you do have a schools agreement with MS, then you will need to update it next year to include the Macs when they ask for total number of computers on your network. Even if you use the Macs without and MS software, if you have a schools agreement you still have to pay MS for the privilege!

You need to turn off network browsing in GP as well.

Very strange! We are just in the process of doing this. We have set up monitoring for KS4 and are now looking at KS3 using FFT data and the end of KS3 predictions from county (based on their levels at Primary school). Where are you based?

We have a small PC behind a plasma screen but we run a web page on it. Far better for content as you can add video, images, text whatever you want. I feel PowerPoint is a bit limited for this type of project.
