We only have a couple of 64 bit AMD machines on campus and have ended up just creating custom images for them to make our life easier. For everything else we just use the standard images.

We use one image for single processor PCs and one for Dual processor PCs (different HAL). Its easy, you just collect together all the drivers that you need for the different machines in a folder on the Hard Drive and Download and run the Sysprep Driver Scanner from Vernalex.com (its free). Then you run Sysprep as normal. Once you have ghosted the machine you will be able to use the image on any of your machines.

If you want to be flash you can put Host (A) records in your DNS server and use host headers to link to each site eg we have Host (A) records for helpdesk, Roombooking & Moodle all hosted on the same server ( so they all have the same IP address). If you need the helpdesk you can just type helpdesk into the address bar and your in. To edit the sites you can just copy the files to the correct folder.

If you have a large amount of teacher machines and clients and not enough money for the likes of netsupport school and netop then you can't really go wrong with synchroneyes. If I remember right we paid £2000 for a site license in December of last year. Yep thats right as many teachers machines and clients as you like. We have it installed in 5 IT suites, 2 Music suites, 3 Design technology suites and the library. Thats a total of 200 PCs and the teachers love it. All Synchroneyes licenses allow you to upgrade to the latest version for free (we have just gone from 5.1 to 6.0) Yes, there are one or two bells and whistles on the other programs but If I think that value for money wise you can't do better then synchroneyes.

We are intending to combine our 2 Networks this summer using Permissions to lock down the standard stuff and IPSEC for securing the SIMS traffic. We just need to persuade staff that allowing kids to use their logons to print in colour unsupervised is definately not a good idea (its bad enough as it is) and that locking the machine when you step away from it is not just there to annoy you. Is anyone using Smartcard authentication or anything similar for admin access? we are just bouncing a few ideas around at the moment.

£3000 sounds about the right amount to ask for to get a 2800. We got one with 8x36GB drives and a tape drive/tapes as a SIMS server last year and if my memory serves me right it was just under £3000. Dont forget that Misco are resellers for Dell even though they are not allowed to advertise it. We use them regularly and every time they have beaten Dell by miles.
