  1. Hi, We are just starting to use deep freeze in school. We have a small guest area setup in school that consists of 5 computers. These 5 computers will be used by the public who can browse the web and use microsoft office etc. We would like to install deep freeze onto them as although they are on a separate vlan from the rest of the network we would like to make sure that after they are used they return to their original state. I have Deep freeze administrator and deep freeze console installed and am currently trying to import the computers we want to use it on. Trouble is it only seems to respond if your importing from an ldap server or novell. Problem we are having is these computers are on a local workgroup. How can I import from a local workgroup? Cheers Adam.
  2. An MIS Manager has just become available in the school, beginning to contemplate going for it. Although it's not neccesarily something I want to be doing long term, the experience may be beneficial in the short term. I have read through the job spec and person spec and I match up to the IT skills required such as knowledge of databases and SIMS etc. The direction I want to be heading is IT Manager but I think I'm falling short on the management aspect, If I could nail the MIS Manager position it may help me in the future. What do you reckon?
  3. So I guess there is nothing I can do then. Our current Network Manager is going to transfer to the Academy as ICT Services Manager completely un-apposed as the other school does not have a Network Manager that could also be considered eligible for the position. As it happens they are only going to offer it to people who are currently doing a similar role which means IT Technicians cannot even apply for it. I can understand the fairness argument of all this but shouldn't the academy be looking purely at who is the best suited for the position not just giving it to the person who currently does the job? there will be a new job description and person specification and while most of the content of the position may be the same I cannot apply even though I fill in for the NM in their absense and I have also had the experience of managing a network. They are saying it would be unfair if they allowed me to go for the position as the current NM would then have to drop down as a techie when the transfer occurs, they do not want to do this due to a legal aspect and a moral one as it would be unfair to uproot those currently in similar positions. They are stressing there will be "no" redundancies and if someone goes for a job they don't get, they will still be re-located within the academy where the academy see's fit. In this scenario, if the Business Manager's from either school go for the Business manager position and one does not get it, they will be slotted in as finance officer. Problem here is there already is a finance officer so wouldn't that be up-rooting them? this would mean they would have to drop down to finance assistant? It all seems fair but from a one sided point and in my opinion it smacks of double standards, how can you point blank dismiss staff from putting their name forward for any position if they feel they can do the job, and can prove it? With regards to an earlier point made by "somabc" we are being told that non-teaching staff are not protected by Tupe for a minimum period, apparantley our conditions are protected during tupe but pay isn't and we won't be given the same protection as teachers which is 3 years. Does this even seem right? Just to note further, most positions will have a minimum of 2 people interviewing for the job, one from either school. So if our Business Manager goes for the job but doesn't get it, she will be offered a lower down position. How come this won't be the case with the NM? there is only one NM and how would it be a problem if I went for the job and got it the NM then is offered a lower down position as IT Tech? am I missing something here, seems to be one rule for one and one rule for another? It shouldn't be about only offering the job to those currently doing the same or similar role, it should be offered to all internal staff who wish to interview for it, at the end of the day isn't it about establishing who is the best for the position? as of December 31st the two schools close to form an academy which means we are all out of a job technically and seeing as though non-teaching staff have not been offered any protection non-teaching positions should be an open application.
  4. Does anyone know if you can be transferred under Tupe regulations if your current position does not exist within the new structure i.e. if the job title/description and pay are different? Or does it merely go off the content of your job? Do staff even have to be transferred by law or can they just say "Sorry we don't need someone in your position in the new structure"
  5. I've thought about it but just don't know where to start. I have 5 years experience currently in an education setting progressing through junior it technician to senior ict technician. To be honest I think most of the time they aren't even looking for someone technical. I did go on a 2 day course titled "Managing a technical support team" which was run by Research machines, although it was an RM course it had no connection to the RM networks, it was completely a leadership course.
  6. I just can't seem to get any opportunities to advance, this is the 2nd school now I don't want to be a techie forever but can't seem to nail any NM interviews I get either :-(
  7. Perhaps but it would be nice to get an opportunity to at least interview, ah well another bad experience coming up here guess I'll have to look for another job as nobody seems to know what will happen to the techies come january, nothing has even been mentioned.
  8. It would yes but it is a "new position" and although the current network manager might be a match for it. Technically so am I. Also what seems unfair is this is combined with a TuPe transfer so basically all the techies, me included are getting fobbed off come january. By law if its a new position, which it is don't they have to advertise and allow us to interview for it? all the admin staff who currently do multiple roles are being told they can apply for multiple ring fenced jobs but I can't?
  9. So looks like I have been screwed over again, the new position that is available in a few weeks I have been told I am not eligible to go for. Its a new position but they want to match current manager's to it, at the min over the two schools there is only one network manager which means they will get it instantly. Don't see how this can be fair as its a new position and I'm being told I won't be considered a match due to my current job title!! I thought it was equal opportunities and everyone should have a shot?
  10. To be honest my long term plan, as in the next 5 years I would be looking to move out of education and into industry, more specifically a large network company. I just feel that in the interim I should be looking to progress into network management in an educational setting. Gain some experience as a technical manager and hopefully that should give me some kudos when looking to move into industry. At the moment I think it would be hard for a school it techie to find a job in industry.
  11. I thought you had to start at the bottom and work your way up lol! I was going to have a shot at the Enterprise set of MCITP's starting with client and working up to administrator, sound like a plan? what are the best sources of study with the MCITP?
  12. Thanks guys, I intend to do part two of my cisco soon to obtain the CCNA. Once I have done that I was going to turn my attention to the Microsoft exams. I take it MCDST would be a good place to start?
  13. Well currently we are going to be an Academy, joining with another school. There are 4 technical support staff currently. 2 at each school. At one site there is me and the Network Manager at the other site there are two techies. As far as I know I am the most qualified but my network manager has more experience than me. In a few weeks time there is a position for ICT Services Manager and they are going to be looking at best matches for the job. The problem is they are telling us its not a way of obtaining promotion and you will be only considered as a match for the position if you currently do that job. In a catch 22 coz I would like to wait and see what happens but there are also other jobs out there. I have been to a few NM interviews in the past but they always seem to promote internally. I'm ok with vanilla stuff at my last school it was initially RM CC3 but I got so tired of not being able to do certain things I started setting up my own servers to run different services, in the end when I left it ran better than it did in the first place but was very much a hybrid system lol.
  14. I'm wondering if anyone could help me on this one. I am currently working as a Senior ICT Technician and have been doing so for the last 4 years, at my last place I ran the network on my own for the best part of a year and half. In total I have racked up 5 years experience in education and have attended or graduated with the following qualifications: HND in Business IT and computing Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT) RM Certified Network Manager RM Certified Network Technician Currently studying for part 2 exam to gain my CCNA Attended 2 training days titled "Managing a technicial support team" Completed the Cisco Networking Academy. On this basis would you think I should be seriously considered for a Network Manager position in an education setting or am I falling short somewhere? At my last school I got screwed over, left waiting and waiting for promotion, lots of failed promises. In the end on the day I handed in my notice they promoted the guy below me without even giving me an opportunity at the position they offered him. Typical I suppose but nothing I could do as I had already tendered my resignation at that point. Cheers Adam.
  15. If I type mcxrefresh I get some error failures but I think this may be because I have not completed the command. Do I need to run it as administrator? Thanks.
  16. Are your mac's dual booted? if so have you checked the time on the macs after you login as localadmin? if the time is out by 1 hour then the status light will remain amber as it can only see your OD server and not your AD server.
  17. Thanks for the advise guys. Just before I left last night I managed to get it working. It seems that when the engineer commisioned our apple network he configured all clients to point to index.sucatalog which I have since found will only find updates relevant for 10.4. Changing this to index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog has now allowed the clients to see updates relevant to 10.6 including the latest 10.6.4 update. :-) Although this has worked, I am pretty certain I will encounter some future problems as mentioned in Antonio's post.
  18. We are having a few problems with Software updates on apple 10.6.2,3,4. In Server admin under Software updates it has fully synced as of today. All new updates have a tick in the box next to them and a blue status light saying they are available for download. There are also a lot of really old updates in the list that we are never going to use. I have managed to get the clients talking to the server for updates but they do not download all the updates available to them. For example all our clients are on 10.6.2 and I want them to download the 10.6.4 update from the server that is currently enabled. What happens is a message comes up saying updates are available when you run software update but another message immediatley pops up over the top saying there are no updates available, you can see the original dialog box behind it saying "show details" but you cannot click on it. Also on server admin on the update server I cannot seem to tick/untick the enable box its all greyed out is this normal?
  19. Hi, Thanks for your response. Binds are working correctly the only error message I can find in the console log is a re-occuring KCGErrorFailure but thats about it, is this anything to do with it?
  20. Has nobody had a similar issue with their apple network? or does anyone know what could cause policies to fail to apply one minute, then when you log out and back in they apply without any problems?
  21. I have a feeling this is all to do with some kind of time out that has been set by our apple engineer during the installation. In WGM we have 4 computer groups. Any members of these groups logon to network accounts within seconds, sometimes too quick and I think this is why the policy does not apply. Yesterday I created a new group and added my laptop into it, the logon process took about 30 seconds and the policies have not failed to apply once yet. Could it be that he has set a time out on login so if policies are not loaded then logon anyway, or something along those lines. I'm totally confused and have tried everything! Please help! lol Cheers
  22. Hi, We have an apple mac server (snow leopard) providing policies to 30+ apple clients (snow leopard) we are using kanaka to integrate novell edirectory with the apples so they can login using normal username and password. The problem is this: Sometimes the clients allow users to login without applying any policies from WGM. This results in short docks and all sorts of other issues associated with policies not applying. We have checked our DNS records/settings and they all seem to check out properly, everything can see and contact each other. I have been unable to source where it is failing during logon and and what stage it attempts to load the policies. We did change the search path in Directory utility to look for the policy server and apply that before looking for the username/password records on the novell server. This has still not fixed the issue. Has anyone had issues with apple clients not picking up policies from WGM but still allowing users to logon even with an AD integration? This could be a general issue and not a Kanaka/eDirectory integration issue although im not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Adam.

    Apple Sidebar

Hi there, We have just had an apple network commisioned and integrated with our novell network. When a user logs in they receieve their home share and access to the shared media drive which mounts to the desktop using their username and password. If I load finder, underneath "places" there are various different locations, one being the users home folder. We would like to add the shared media drive to the list of "places" now I know I can drag this across to the sidebar within finder but I was wondering if there is anyway to automate this process for users when they login? I have looked in workgroup manager but couldn't find anything. Has anyone managed to do this? Cheers
