Yeah, the problem with that is that it doesn't work. They also need access to the manage printer option in order to clear the queue. If I give them access to manage documents, it won't clear for them and it gives an error about not having rights.

We have a 2008R2 server with all of our district's printers installed on it, and GPOs set to push them out to machines (21 locations, each pushing out by IP range). This is great, but clearing stuck queues is our big issue right now. How do you guys manage this? The only way I can find to allow our LLC staff to clear printer queues is to give them rights to manage the printer - but the problem is that they can change drivers, settings, names, etc - which I really hate giving because some of them like to troubleshoot themselves and start messing with things. Unfortunately, our district doesn't like enforcing rules when it comes to this sort of thing, so I'm open to suggestions on how to handle this. Having techs clear queues isn't the best idea, because a printer may have a stuck queue, and they may not know for a couple hours (or days if they are out stick, etc). Rights on printers seem to be crap - any help is appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know of any free or cheap options for live software license metering? For example, if we have software where we have 300 licenses for (concurrent users), that we can install it on our whole district, and when the 300th person launches that software, no one else is able to? They would get a pop-up telling them to wait in line for it, or that it's unavailable and will notify them when an instance of it is? I would think something similar to this: Policy-driven Software License Management - Sassafras Software Of course, I'm guessing there are no free options for this - but being a K-12 district in Illinois, funds are very limited for us. Any suggestions/input is appreciated

Yes, we're in the USA. We have a 1Gbps internet connection that is split up over 20 locations/buildings. The internet all filters through one central firewall currently, so we were hoping for some sort of solution to sit near the firewall and manage all content.

I know this forum is sponsored by Smoothwall, but I would appreciate honesty if another filtering service may be better suited for our needs. Our wants/setup: Filter ALL devices in our district. We have 6,000 Windows mahcines, 1,500 Chromebooks, 1,500 iPads, and BYOD (phones, laptops etc). We want to be able to setup a proxy that when kids bring home machines, we can force traffic to still go through the proxy while outside of our buildings. We *NEED* google safe search enabled, and high level image filtering basically. This is a big issue for us - we need as much safe content as possible when kids search for things. Ability to manage sites for specific OUs, machines, IPs, etc would be beneficial (whitelist, etc) We've looked at Securly, which was brought up to us at a conference, and they require certificates on devices for them to be able to access HTTPS sites. This is fine for in-house machines, since we can force it via AD, MDM, and Google Admin for the Chromebooks....but for BYOD, anything that was HTTPS was being blocked. So people couldn't access Facebook or other things on their phones or tablets they brought in from home, because we couldn't force a certificate on them. We are a very lenient district - we don't try to lock things down heavily - social media is fine for the most part, kids can chat, play games, etc - we just need the ability to really restrict what sites they visit, and more important, the content - google safe search, image search results, etc. Any suggestions?

We have a print server setup, with the printers installed locally to the server. They are then shared, listed in directory, and pushed out via group policy. This is fine - but we want to restrict our level 1 techs to only be able to clear printer queues for when things get backed up and printers go into error mode. I've gone into the properties of the print server and given 'manage documents' permission to these techs, but they still get an 'access denied' error when doing so. Is there a better way of doing this? They have started messing with our print setup before when they had full access, so we don't want them to have access to drivers/ports/etc - just clearing all jobs/queues. Our K-12 institution has a problem with people watching live events (NHL, Olympics, etc) all at once, which tends to bog down our internet pipe. Yes, we can throttle and/or block them, but our network team always get crap for doing it. Given that's our right to ensure a well performing network, we don't need to do anything else - but I was thinking of trying to find some sort of open-source/free software that would allow us to setup a server that could be streaming the live feed, and would then easily allow us to have teachers/students watch the stream via another URL that would pull bandwidth from the server. This way, the traffic stays on the LAN and leaves the WAN bandwidth free (other than the 1 server machine). Does something like this exist? Do I even make any sense with this request? Thanks

We pay for a very limited NetSupport license for some of our labs, but I was looking for something free and small to put on every machine in our district that would allow us to force a Windows login. There are some programs or reasons why we would want groups of machines to login to Windows as a domain admin, and it would save a bunch of time instead of us going to them all manually. Not sure if something like this exists, but I've spent a lot of time googling stuff and haven't found anything.

We have an older version of Inspiration - version 7.5. We want to package it to deploy to certain schools, and I've repacked it via Advanced Installer. The MSI installs fine, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how it stores the license/serial # information. Any ideas on how to package it with the serial # embedded? I've compared registry snapshots, and I don't see anything there - so I'm not entirely sure how it stores the license information. Any help is appreciated. I know the latest version is 9.0, but we don't have money to upgrade to it at this time. Thanks!
