Thanks, I will give the basic HTML version a go. We dont use Chromebooks here just windows PC's. Not sure if its a domain group policy thing? I have just disabled all the group policies related to Google - just waiting for the policy to roll out.

Hi all I have recently received a flood of complaints from staff and students saying that when they click on an email in their inbox, they just get a "Loading..." bar and nothing happens (screenshot attached). I initially thought it was an issue with our Smooth wall filtering system as I am aware Googles doesn’t like being inspected but it doesn’t appear to be smooth wall and its only hitting certain staff/students. Below is what I have tried so far: 1. Deleting cookies and history - no luck 2. Trying in incognito mode - no luck 3. Exceptional the PC from smooth wall - no luck 4. Tried the account on another PC - no luck I did try logging into my personal Gmail account on the same PC that was having issues and my personal Gmail works fine. Also, Office 365 web-based email works fine. I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue and managed to resolve it?

Thanks, I thought that might be the case - having an amateur moment here. Thanks for the confirmation. I shall pop down to the store room and dig one out.

RJ45 - but I am guessing I am using the wrong cable. I have a feeling I might need a RJ45 to COM connector

Thank you all so much. I am overwhelmed with all the kind support. A very kind gentleman has sorted me out a switch so we will be sorted tomorrow. I have tried putty with the console but I am not getting any response from the switch at all it just says "Network cable unplugged" I was thinking about flashing it with the firmware from the D-LINK site but unable to locate a backdoor
-
Morning all Our main core switch failed on Monday and we are unable to get a hold of any fibre switches. The unit that has failed is a D-Link dxs-3600-32s/si - The switch powers on but the 24 pot LED lights constantly stay on with the fans constantly spinning. The LED lights then turn off but the fans are still spinning then just cycles. I have tried to connect a network cable into the console and mngt port but I just get a "identifying network" with a 169 address. We are currently up and running with a single switch that had a couple of ports free for the fibers (Really lucky!) the rest of the school is running on 4G dongles. The reason for this post is: 1. Has anyone else had this issue with a D-Link switch and able to find an easy solution 2. Has anyone got a spare D-Link or compatible switch we can purchase or even borrow until a new one from Europe arrives (between 10-15 days). Happy to collect in person Not a fun week Thanks

For sophis Web filtering the below is a link to the basics - should be a good starting point https://docs.sophos.com/central/Customer/help/en-us/central/Customer/concepts/ConfigureWebControl.html Here's a link to system manager sign up page for meraki. Just went though my old emails. Even if you get a 30 day free trial, it should take you though until the end of the Feb lockdown. Not essential but handy for remote desktop support https://meraki.cisco.com/form/systems-manager-signup -

Sorry for the delay in replying. How are you doing? I did group policy though the admin account (type mmc in run command, add snap in, group policy and you will see two tabs, connect to local computer and users, select users and choose non administrative users.i am doing this from the top of my head so apologies if the wording is a little different. Then go through the policies and ammend as necessary. Yeah I use meraki for remote off site support although I'm not 100% sure it's still free. Although it's optional but handy. Netsupport dna is also good for remote support but isn't free. Sophos Central is really easy. You setup policies based on devices and users (in this case localusers) I will be more than happy to give you a ring if you want me to talk you though it/give you a hand just drop me a PM with your number. -

Hi Sounds like you might be over complicating the process and causing yourself alot more work. In theory, it's a really good setup but don't forget - you also need to consider Web filtering as we are still responsible for this. This is how I have done it: 1. Unboxed a brand new vanilla dfe laptop. Removed all the bloatware including the app store. Installed office and setup a local group policy for non admin users (removing access to settings etc) done a bit of housekeeping such as setting up our school logo for the background. 2. Created a setup folder on the C drive and dumped sophos av and meraki. Created a batch script which sets the machine name to the serial number of the device and added a few extra lines to install av/meraki and created a shortcut to the batch on the admin desktop 3. Created a new non admin user and called it localuser with no password and also prevented them from changing It 4. Created a master image using macrium reflect free edition 5. Grabbed another dfe laptop, imaged it using the master image (takes around 10-12 mins) then login as admin, double click on the admin batch file and let it run. Once completed, give it a reboot and login as local user, shutdown so when the student powers the device on, it auto logs in I use Sophos central for our Web filtering as it's pretty good at blocking unwanted applications from running/USBs and stop students from playing Web games accessing unwanted content etc. I also use Meraki free edition (not sure if you can still sign up for free) to manage the devices remotely for any tech issues. Sometimes it's easier to remote in rather than talk a student though over the phone although I haven't needed to yet. I hope this helps. It works for us. With a few USB sticks I can usually get though about 10 per hour - 18 with my Technician. -
[android tablet] Preventing factory device reset
ryanplym replied to ryanplym's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Thanks I have found some solution: 1. Enroll the devices as Hexnode for work 2. Block play.google.com on our firewall If a student factory resets the device, it will prompt them to log into google, but as play.google.com is blocked, they get a nice message telling them they are unable to sign in and the device reboots back to square one. Thanks for your help -
[android tablet] Preventing factory device reset
ryanplym posted a topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi We have 64 Archos tablets, we are using Hexnode MDM in Kiosk mode to prevent students from accessing unwanted applications. This works really well except when a student has found a way to factory reset the device and decided to play clash of clans. Has anyone found either a MDM that prevents this or a way of locking the device so it doesn't factory reset (Cutting students hands-off isn't an option, unfortunately) Thanks -
Sorry, but you do not have access to Google classroom

It was the device management that was causing an issue. I unchecked "Require password" and it just worked like magic. Thankyou so much for your help -

ryanplym replied to ryanplym's topic in Cloud Services
Thank you for all your replies. I have tested one of our test accounts on two devices one being a Samsung S7 which I completely wiped clear and started fresh and Samsung S20 and both have the same issue. We are using the free edition of Google education but not sure if this has anything to do with it I have taken your advice and contacted their support team. I will let you know how I get on -

Hi Cache and Steve Thanks for your reply. I have just cheched the service status and it says "ON for everyone" Thanks Steve - I saw that post on Google when I ran a search earlier this morning. The option was already enabled. -
Afternoon all Hope you are all keeping safe and well We have a G-Suite which was set up by one of our IT teachers several years ago (and they still manage it). I have been reciving many emails from students stating they are having issues logging into the google classroom app on their android devices. They keep getting a popup that says "We are sorry, but you do not have access to classroom. Please contact your domain administrator for access" I do have full google admin access and I have taken a look online but had no joy. I can however access google classroom though http://classroom.google.com. Has anyone had this issue? Thanks for any help

Inappropriate Google home page background
ryanplym replied to Bagpuss66's topic in How do you do....it?
Are you enabling the policy under your computers OU or Users OU? You will need to apply the policy under your pupil OU otherwise it will not work. I found this out the hard way. Does this make sense? -
Papercut Client randomy closing? heres is a fix for you
ryanplym replied to chrisakak9's topic in Educational Software
Thanks Thimon. I have tried installing the application locally on the PC and also load from the server at startup. It works great when the user logs in for the first time, then the application just crashes out randomly. Although the fix from chrisakak9 is putting a plaster on the problem, it does work really well and for that I am greatful!- 8 replies

Inappropriate Google home page background
ryanplym replied to Bagpuss66's topic in How do you do....it?
Hi I had exactly the same problem. This is how I fixed it: 1. Import google ADMX templates from: https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chrome/policy/policy_templates.zip 2. Go to Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Homepage 3. Enable "Configure the home page URL" - Mine is set to Google but set it to whatever you wish 4. Disable "Use new tab page as homepage" - This is the tab that allows a student to change themes/background images 5. Repeat the above steps for Google Chrome Default settings and in User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Homepage(Not sure if its needed but I have done it) Additionally, I have also disabled: - Dinosaur Easter Egg Game ( User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Allow dinosaur easter egg game ) - Block access to a list of URLs (User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Block access to a list urls --> Chrome://newtab ) - Incognito Mode (User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Classic Adminisrative templates (ADM) --> Google --> Google Chrome --> Incoginito mode availability Might be a little overkill but it works well for me -
Hi All, I am attempting to deploy Windows 10 1803 to all machines, but for some reason, the image deploys fine with no issues but it ignores the unattend file. There is nothing much in the file other than the regional options. This is what I have done so far: - I have updated the ADK + Boot image to 10.0.17134.1, - created the unattend.xml file using Windows System Image Manager with no warnings or errors, - added the xml to a SCCM share with everyone having full access (to test) - Created a package under software library -> Application Management --> Packages (selected this package contains source files) and did not create a program - Distributed the content - Under task sequences, under apply operating system, I applied the operating system from a captured image (Vanilla WIM from W10 1803 ISO) and selected use the unattended or sysprep answer file for a custom installation - Pointed at the package I created earlier and added the file name unattended.xml - Press Apply and OK Rebooted a machine, selected the correct task sequence. The machine downloads and applies the WIM no problem but the language and calendar are still the US. This is the XML file I am using: en-GB en-GB en-GB en-US en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB en-GB true true true true true false Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou so much in advance!
