Do you already have anything that can create workflows? Does your HR system not include anything? We are slowly building a process through our helpdesk, but once our new HR system goes live we will probably use that as it has the functionality to engage staff before they are onsite and employed.

I think you can. I haven't done it in a long time. Easiest is probably to make a new GPO with the allow settings and security apply it only to those 2 PCs.

If you have requested redundancy and you are overruled then you have CYA. If you lay out the options and state why you have chosen your preferred option, then you have done your best and been diligent. If management decide they do not feel the risk is big enough and go the cheaper option then it is down to them and you can point to your recommendations. It is why, even if I know the answer, I always provide the safe option as at least I have given the option. Also comes under the rule of "don't ask, don't get". If they use the "it never goes wrong and we don't need it" excuse, ask them if we have insurance for anything? Same principal, we pay the money hoping not to use it. It's about assessment, judgement and planning. If you are being fed by one substation you aren't fault tolerant, so do you get the power company to give you two separate power feeds? A storage tray that has duplicate controllers, power supplies and redundant drives is pretty bullet proof, so do you need to invest in a duplicate? If your supplier/support can get you replacement within 8 hours is that enough? The way to look at these things is that it gives you ammunition to go to SLT and the governors to say, this is what the Government say we should have and be doing, when inspection comes round what are you going to say to them? It helps us to get that funding as we have the case, rather than just the IT guy says.

Sounds like a cluster. Had it at last 2 places for everything not just critical and will get there here. N+1 infrastructure, nothing fancy. Having it transition semi-seamlessly to the Cloud would be nice for a temporary fix.

Check with your Bursar if they are fine with that process with FreedomTech as mine was dead against it and made noises that it made accounting rules very tricky. Check there aren't rack kits for them. Alot of servers have kits that can turn them sideways, add bunny ears and in they go. Totally depends on the make and model. Alternatively, is there room for a second cab somewhere close by?

An additional question, did you guys manage the change yourself or did you get a company to do it? Part of me feels it shouldn't be too much of a faff, more a co-ordination, but having had a quote of quite a lot just for managing the change I'm wondering if I am missing something major.

There are rumours of the deadline being pushed by a short while, due to BT not having had all the bits in place in good time. Though I have seen a sudden push recently by companies to get things sorted. Overall though, we can't rely on that and need to get shifted. I am still finding old lines coming out of the wood work but these are single lines, for alarms or broadband from before we had a decent network. Which is interesting as the DfE is getting more and more hardline on filtering. More schools moved away from hardware to DNS filters or URL only filters, and then DfE announce schools should be content filtering. I don't know the answer really and you may be right, secured browsers that are allowed out, and other browsers blocked.

Anyone had any experience with HP Pagewide MFP 586 devices? We have a couple left over from migrating to copiers to use for exams or temp installs (inspections and the like). We pulled them out of storage to setup for mock exams, checked them over and all OK, today teacher goes to check them and they are printing blank pages. Another device that is used constantly has also done the same. We've run print head cleans, alignments, changed cartridges and all the same result. Paper just shoots through, which does seem a bit quick, but nothing on the page. Actions also taken: - Factory reset - Firmware wipe - tried from scanner - tried print test Any ideas? Just seems really odd that they were fine before Christmas.
