Apparently its our job at the end of every day, where we haven't done much really but drink tea because thats what IT Support Staff do all day, to check that the letters on the keyboards dont spell something rude, the monitors are plugged in and have been cleaned - Not the teachers who spend all day in the classroom.

Interesting thread ( yes it really is this time o' the night, and yes I am still working and no they wont appreciate it). I can't wait 'till the end of term when they get out there movies and whatnots. Wonder if SLT will remember the memo I sent them saying we were breaking the law and that "..we're teachers.." really wouldn't stand up in court

The problem I found is one of attitude ie we're teachers and you are nothing (despite having more experience and qualifications than the entire IT Department put together ) was faced with this dilema. My predecessor pretty much let the IT teachers do what they wanted, especially with regards to accessing the students user spaces. Comming from the private sector this shocked me, but what was wordse was the HT's attitude. When I pointed out "..what if the teachers altered the students work.." I was met with a look that said it all!! I checked with BECTA and the LEA who advised that read access was more than suitable, write access was a deffo no-no but it still hasnt stopped the HOD trying to get hold of a USB External Drive to copy the students work. I covered my back by sending the HOD and HT a memo highlighting that under the DPA they not me are responsable for the data if it get's lost or if there are any suggestions of cheating.

Absolutely! This is what the DPA is all about - just try getting the SLT and teachers to understand it - they always without fail come up with the ".. I need it to teach..." comment. I always ask how they would feel if I published their exam results and see what they say

I'm pretty flexible with my two tekkies as long as nothing major is comming up then I don't have a problem. However in the almost two years I've been here I've had the grand total of 18 days holiday (out of 44!!) and that includes chrimbo !!! Thing is most of our work gets done when the 'little darlings' and the kids aren't in so you can't really win. As I said to my MicroManager (sorry line managerish) you either let us have time off in term time or we'll all be off over the holidays and nothing will get done! Hey Tom, Yep it recognises me no problems (I'm using IDENT), but doesn't want to play ball with my grouping. One feature I'd really like to the ability to see what's in the downloaded blocklists/ banned phrases and be able to edit them easily.

Yep the groups are defo mapped correctly ..... apart from this little quirk, SG2008 is pretty good

Ok really daft questions, but it's the New Year. Firstly have set up my SG2008, have mapped groups to our AD but when I try and surf it just drops me into 'Default Users' group - have I missed anything out? Also do the 'mods' for SG2/3 work on SG2008?

I'm playing with both methods, but it looks IDENT is going to be the one I go for. I'm runing SP3 and IDENT using smoothwalls version of the old Dans Guardian IDT

We're rolling out a messenger system based on OpenFire and Spark - Bit of overkill if all you want is one way messaging, but we really like the other features it gives you (plus if you really want you can customise it to match the school's logo etc.)

We use Promethian boards and Toshiba projectors. Teacher love them. As for damage, we use the ".. it'll cost £2000 chargeable to your department.." talk - they soon get the idea to look after them.

Sounds really daft but have you checked the usb connection hasn't come loose at the top of the IWB? It's done this a couple of times to us (especially if the students hvae been allowed to play with it) - apart from that have you tried using another USB cable?

Then today it's fixed!!!! I suspect that it may be the IE cache/ temp files causing the problem - still it's working now, maybe it's time to look at replacing Office altogether?

Here's a weird one.... IT Teacher says last lesson Pubilsher 2003 could preview web pages with no problem. Today it can't! When we try it logged on as a student it misses off graphics and nav bars - we log on as system admin and the problem goes away and the web page can be seen properly. We've given full permissoins to the temporary folder, but still no luck - Any one with any ideas?

SIMS Same problems as everyone else - Upgrades breaking things, leading to more upgrades. The SIMS Manager blaming everything on everything else but SIMS....

OCS and GLIPI here too. Runs loverly and as it's installed as part of the computer startup settings, there's no way round it!

We had a demo a few months back and it's really impressive - We're looking at combining it with our new VOIP system in April

We're lucky here in that I'm an ex-Siemens engineer and my Senior Tech is very good so we do our own cabling runs. My predecessor got contractors in and spent a fortune at the school and got very little in return

My worry with this like the rest is that it smacks of BSF. Luckily our AD doesn't attach to SIMS (the SIMS manager wanted it her own way so I din't feel like arguing), but what happens if the LEA's server gets compromised? We all know how good the public bodies are at looking atfer info.

Nov. release 1 went on and apart from a couple of issues (cover being one) and it dropping the sql server connection at random, it went ok
