  2. I've never had the chance to play with a Note, but the feeling I get is that it wouldn't be too comfortable in my pocket, and due to the size of the screen typing would be slower... what do you think?

I'm not going to pretend to know anything, I know nothing about how schools work, but seriously... if you need a larger address block then you need a larger address block... what do they want you to do exactly? If you subnet a /22 network and you're currently using 800 of those addresses then that doesn't give you much space for growth does it... and you don't want to have to redo the whole thing a year or two down the line. If you could run PAT you wouldn't have this problem, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't allow that!

  7. Now I'm even more confused... "NAT from that range to the SWGfL range"? In that case, why not just use the range you have been provided with and subnet it?

  10. I don't get it. The address block given to you is a public address block; they don't care about your private addressing scheme -- or do they? Obviously the NAT configuration would have to be altered to allow the new subnets to be translated -- is that a problem? If it is, then like you said you could subnet the private range you are currently using and it shouldn't be a problem (as long as your public address range is large enough).
  11. Why do you need an additional box to do NAT? How do your devices get onto the internet at the moment? Do you have an address range which is big enough for all of your devices? Are you allowed to use PAT?
  12. You can create VLANs on a L2 switch, but you need a L3 device to do the interVLAN routing -- preferably a L3 switch.
  13. Although segmenting the network is a good idea, a 200 host network is quite small and therefore I wouldn't really expect there to be an issue with excess broadcasts. Could you post up a diagram of your network, including the link speeds to all devices?

I'm volunteering at an Academy which will be updating its school infrastructure (new switches, SANs, virtualisation etc), problem is that all the work is being done by external companies so I'm not going to be able to learn anything. I wonder if I could get some work experience at the companies that design and implement these solutions? Anyone know of such companies around North London which might be worth contacting? Also, has anyone used these companies to build an IT solution (network infrastructure, server, storage, virtualisation, backup etc) from scratch and have been provided with a proposal document? If so, would be great if I could take a look at such a document to see some more of the specifics.
  15. I'd like to know what kind of "technologies" are being used in schools so I can set myself some goals in terms of studying over the next year. Networking - I have my CCNA and I'm almost finished with CCNP (one exam left), so in terms of networking I'm ok. I should familiarise myself with the HP CLI, though. Windows Server - I need to learn Windows Server, I think MCITP:SA would be a good start... perhaps I'll start studying for it in the summer -- as long as I complete it before I finish my degree that's fine. I think having good knowledge of networking and Windows Server should put me in a good position once I finish my degree. Other technologies such as virtualisation, SANs, backup systems etc shouldn't be too difficult to pick up on, I doubt I'd have to go into much depth with them. Am I going about this the right way?

  17. The HTC One X is without a doubt the better phone out of the three. The 4.7" display is perfect; I find that 3.5" displays (such as the one on the iPhone) are just too small. Specification wise the HTC One X is far superior with a quad core processor and 1 GB of RAM. Can't compare the two in my opinion, unless for some reason you have a bias towards Apple and iOS. Might also be worth waiting a little bit to see what Samsungs new phone is like (Samsung Galaxy S3?).
  18. Is this not simply a case of not having enough bandwidth, then? If you have a 100 Mbps uplink to the fibre with multiple devices connecting to that (non-fibre) switch, then there's no way you're going to be able to get the full 100 Mbps as you are limited by the 100 Mbps uplink (which I imagine is being shared by multiple devices). What you could try doing is disconnecting all devices from the non-fibre switch except from one host, and then try the transfer from that single host.
  19. When you plug the RJ45 connector in the socket does it secure in place? If not, try removing it and flexing the clip upwards to reshape (hope that makes sense) the clip and see if that helps.
  20. Based on what you have said, I'm guessing that you have your switch connected to the fibre switch using Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) ...is that correct? If so, how many other machines are connected to that (non-fibre) switch?

  24. Google "cisco configure protocol independent multicast".
  25. So IP multicast is selected and you have configured the appropriate subnets -- right? Were you able to check the switches configuration to see whether there is an ACL configured on any of the interfaces?
