I am in two minds about this. I agree it has benefits if implemented properly but I very much doubt it would be. We simply can't afford the huge costings it would require for extra staff hours and all that would go into keeping the school running longer. From the standpoint of schools like mine, if we had such a budget I think it would be much better spent on more staff to allow more time for each child. We have a high percentage of children with home difficulties and while I wish I could keep them at school safe and well all the time many of them simply wouldn't cope with days that long and it would most likely affect their attitude towards school, having big implications. I am in a primary school so it would be quite different from a high school. Children should be allowed to be children. They should go climb trees and eat worms. It really varies depending on the type of school, area and lots of other factors but I imagine they have done little to consider more than a blanket approach. What works for some schools in some countries will in turn only work for some in this country.

We try to avoid having staff follow our twitter for that reason. But we show twitter updates on our website so staff just check it there if they wish to.

Phoned in this morning and the head closed the school for kids and staff but now snow has disappeared. Feel bad being off for nothing. Internet has gone down here so I can't remote in and the caretakers already locked the school so I can't go in anyway. :/ we were meant to break up today for 2 weeks so I guess Easter is starting early!

oh the joy :/ at least the Easter egg hunt will be slightly harder for the kids if the playgrounds covered in snow!

We have ipads for KS1 and they are always in demand, whilst our laptops which are also for KS1 sit around doing not very much. I was reluctant at first when we got the ipads as im not a huge apple fan but I have to admit they do work well for primary education. I would advise looking to get some on loan first to trial them if you were thinking of the ipad route. We loaned some from the Learning Lighthouse i'm sure wherever you are they would have something similar. For KS2 and upwards I would say laptops every time but there are a lot of intuitive apps on the ipads for the little ones and they do get very excited about using them. The laptops are to big for them to use just as a 15 min activity and the netbooks we used to have just limited us to much. I did look into android but at the time their wasnt enough to contend I have no idea whats available in terms of educational apps now. Depending on what type of school you are based in we found them most useful for our EAL kids. Just if you do look at ipads dear lord buy decent cases! Ours have never been smashed or broken in over a year in the hands of sticky, bouncing children but that might be because I have kitted them out ready for survival in a warzone.

By no means my first job but the only one I would consider making into a career What other jobs / roles have you done previously? Au Pair, One.doc coordinator, Graphic and web designer, Graphic Illustrator, IT Technician (current) How many interviews did it take to get your first job in IT? My first Job in IT was as a One.doc Coordinator in a power station it was awful and almost put me off IT for life! only had one interview for that but I knew the guy interviewing me so I doubt that counts for much. For my first job as a Tech I had one interview and then was placed in a local school for 6 months and then the school decided if they would take me on permanently after that so I guess I just had a really long interview! Have you ever felt that being female is a help or a hindrance to gaining a job in IT? Both, I think being female, right or wrong actually helped me get the job during the interview I had for this role. They actually triple checked with me that I was applying for the correct role and then said it was very refreshing to see a women and that it helped make me more approachable to schools with a large percentage of female staff. A lot of the staff have commented the same. But then I have the same issues as a lot of people in this post where people never believe that I am the Technician but that could be to do with me being young as I am 23. During the first 6 months working here I had to go on a bundle of health and safety, child protection etc course that was specifically aimed at Technicians. They were running an admin one at the same time and I was told more than once I was in the wrong place and redirected to the admin course room -.- If you were considering IT (or other engineering / programming careers) whilst at school what support did you receive? None, I had a really good IT Teacher in school but the subjects just didn’t go into enough detail we only learnt the basics like word processing etc but nothing about hardware or any software development etc so I think even if I knew what I wanted to do back then it wouldn’t have been enough of the nitty gritty stuff.

We are currently waiting for the caretaker to leave so that we can fill his room with loads of cards and poems about him and his mop and a giant lipstick covered picture of him for valentines day. This is just a warm up for April fools so going to have to think of something big. Our Head is usually the most creative at April fools.

I think I have a stowaway! I was finally sorting though the haul from BETT and this little fellow jumped out my bag. The only thing is I actually don't recall visiting Sherston and I have nothing else from them so how it ended up in my bag is beyond me :/

Got a little stack of friends and family laptops to attend to that I have been putting of. A new animation project to work through and if time permits new tattoos to be done!

This...most definitely this!!! Kinda stupid really cause on every other stand I would talk to them until they basically ushered me away but I feel like i'm visiting supreme gurus at the edugeek stand!

Im happy now because thats the only one I can find by me and I always thought I was missing out! Has to be Rockstar tropical guava for me though, had a very unhealthy habit of drinking them everyday until our Caretaker pointed out that we sounded like a party school everytime he emptied the bins from the IT room and there was more energy drinks than paper -.- Water from now on!

First time at BETT on Friday, really enjoyed it! eyed up some nice stuff. Thank you to those at the edugeek stand who gave me my lanyard and bottle opener even though I was to shy to actually say anything :/
