Hi all, I have just got a Acer W510 in the department with Windows 8 to start testing Win8 and getting policies etc ready for any mobile tablet we get in the school. I have a few questions regarding the Metro apps and I wondered whether anyone knew the answers! I found were the apps are saved in a hidden folder called "WindowsApps" in the Program Files folder but I don't see how this works when different people login. 1. For example on Windows 7 you install a program its available for everyone. With Win8 I at the moment have a local user on the tablet (for home use) and my domain account (which I logon to at work) and if I install a metro app it's only available to that logged on user. I understand that metro apps are link with their Microsoft account so a purchased app Microsoft wouldn't want every user to have access to obviously, but then how does this save the app in the "WindowsApps" folder as I have looked at the permissions on the app folders and they all seem to be the same. Why can't a different user from the one that downloaded the app, search on the search bar and add free apps to their metro desktop, or it just be in the "all users" metro desktop instead of having to download it again? And if there do download it again does it create another folder for the same app or install other the top of the current one!! How does that work? 2. And this slightly links in to the end of the last question, when I installed Win8 all the inbuilt apps needed updating so I updated them on the domain account. I take the W510 home login with the local account and all the same apps need upgrading again, how does this work? Surely the apps update in one folder and shouldn't need updating again? 3. Also if the apps are installed in "WindowsApps" in the Program Files folder what happen if a use logs in to a different win8 tablet, will none of their apps be there? Would they have to download them again? Obviously this is a difficult problem to solve as you wouldn't want it saving the apps to there profile making it huge either, but could/can you redirect were the apps are downloaded too? 4. Lastly for free or purchase apps is there a way of rolling them out via GP like conventional software? A place you can download them to a central server and deploy so everyone that logs into the tablet gets the same apps if done centrally? Hopefully if I can get answers to these questions I can work out the do's and don't's for staff and better inform then when they start asking questions Thanks FB

Hi newby, The first thing you need to look into then as assigning the two scripts to run via group policy, run the logon at logon and logoff at logoff for the users! google it, theres lots of people describing different ways of doing it, something like this How to Add VBS to Group Policy Logon - Spiceworks Thanks FB
-
Hi newby, What Tom is saying is that you'll have to tell us at what point of the install/use of skeep your are stuck at? I see the servers are working, is it just that the IP address and usernames aren't against the machine names when you search? Have you put the two scripts (skeeplogon.vbs and skeeplogoff.vbs) into a group policy to run so that they run each time a user logs on or off? Thanks FB
-
Hi tehnewby1, Have you read though this whole thread first to see if any of the mentioned solutions fix your issue? Thanks FB
-
Surely it's got to be something to do with permissions then?
-
Some great fault finding posts there Tom I have contacted Skeep him self and he said the ADSchema.vbs is "That is what sets up the permissions in ad. As long as you have permissions already just running the script should work." So maybe this could help with your problem, altho its a long shot. Like you say if that ip attribute is missing it going to throw up all sorts of problems, why wouldn't you have it tho, random?
-
Hi qUoTum, Firstly it doesn't display users on the left OU unit structure just machines (I don't use this bit anyway just the search feature). Secondly its been such a long time since I set it up I can't remember what the ADScheme.vbs does I'll try and find out, lastly could the Username/IP-Adress/Mac-Adress not showing be the same problem as Tom above have you tried his modified script? Thanks Duncan

Hi Robot, I'm interest to know if you got GVRP setup correctly? We are testing it on 3 HP Procurve switches at the moment... Enabled GVRP on all 3 switches, the "top master switch" we added 3 extra VLANs and sure enough if you type sh VLANs on the other two switches the VLANs appear on the CLI. However if you type "menu" into either of the switches and go to option 2 > "switch configuration" then option 8 > "VLAN menu" then option 2 > "VLAN names" the vlans don't show up. Therefore if you pick option 3 > "VLAN port assigenment" to setup which ports you want on which VLAN the other VLANs don't show up... Alternatively if you are on the CLI and type "config t" > "VLAN #" to add ports to a VLAN you get the error "Dynamic VLANs cannot be configured manually" How are you suppose to add ports to the correct VLAN if VALNs can't be edited that are added via GVRP? Or am I missing something here?

Spot on Tom thanks for posting the modified code I'm sure it will help someone in the future nice one

Hi Tom, Sorry I know bits about how the programs work because I know the guy that created the program but he doesn't really support it anymore and I'm not a vbs expert at all. Can you just output the variables to screen editing he vbs file? Is it something to do with admin rights maybe? Although I wouldn't of thought so because the username is working....
-
hmm I'm not 100% sure then as the scripts inputs all that information into AD and if its getting the usernames etc but not the IPs the script is defo running but not completing. Have you run the script locally and then looking in ADSI edit for the machine you have just run it on and found the variables below? As skeep doesn't use a database its writes everything to AD, under the ipHostNumber for example if you open ADSI edit you should see the computers IP address in this field and this is where the console gets its information from objComp.employeeNumber = strUserName 'Last Logged on User objComp.employeeID = boolLoggedOn 'loggedOn objComp.ipHostNumber = IP 'IP Address objComp.networkAddress = MAC 'MAC address objComp.serialNumber Thanks Duncan
-
Hi Tom have you put the skeeplogoff and skeeplogon.vbs located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Skeep\Skeep VNC Console\scripts folder on a policy in AD so the login script runs each time someone logs on and the same for logoff? Thanks FB

Sending e-mail via vbs and using authentication
FatBoy replied to FatBoy's topic in How do you do....it?
Hi Arthur, I'm still getting the "The server rejected the sender address. The server response was: 530.5.7.1 Client was not authenticated" For the username field I tried the below format, also domain\username, FQDN and just the username on its own! oConf.Fields(schema & "sendusername") = "[email protected]" oConf.Fields(schema & "sendpassword") = "password" Any ideas? Thanks FB -
Sending e-mail via vbs and using authentication
FatBoy replied to FatBoy's topic in How do you do....it?
Thanks for this Arthur, things have got really busy here so I'll look into this asap cheers -
Dear all, I have been using a script for sometime now which was sending e-mails to us via our own exchange server and our exchange didn't require authentication. We have just moved our exchange users over to a centralised 2010 exchange cluster at head office and they do require authentication to send mails from the server. I was using this script to send the mails. My question is would anyone know how to send a username and password with this e-mail request so the exchange server accepts the mail and sends it? Set objEmail = CreateObject("CDO.Message") objEmail. From = "[email protected]" objEmail. To = "[email protected]" objEmail.Subject = "Server down" objEmail.Textbody = "Server1 is no longer accessible over the network." objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _ ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusing") = 2 objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _ ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserver") = _ "smarthost" objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Item _ ("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserverport") = 25 objEmail.Configuration.Fields.Update objEmail.Send Thanks FB

No one defo knows then? Well could I ask the question a different way.... How does everyone else backup their AD settings on their DCs? Thanks
-
Hi all, I want to make sure I'm backing up my DC correctly and just wondered whether people could confirm what I believe to do true.... We have 3 DCs on the network anyway so the chances of them all going are nearly nil but you never know. We use backup Exec 2010 and I just backup the System state on the main DC holding most but not all of the FSMO roles, is that enough? Plus I have heard that if you backup the system state you can only restore it to the same phyiscal machine is this true, or is it only true if your using windows backup? Should I if the worst came to the worst be able to install another different physical DC and restore the system state from backup exec to this theoretical DC? Thanks FB

Thanks Arthur I'll give that a go at some point sorry I didn't reply earlier I didn't get a notification you posted :0( So what you are saying is by default it installs everything... From what I remember it installed but didn't install any features (altho I could be wrong). Either way I give it a go at some point. Thanks muchly

Right guys Arthur is defo right the ADDLOCAL, it will not work in the property section which if you read the link it makes sense. It is a shame because the server name and language in the MST works a treat I have change the script to look like what shinobi suggested and added the /q so it works silent. Ended up with this: dim objShell, fs, sCmd set fs=CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") ' check to see if its installed If NOT fs.FolderExists("C:\Program Files\Equitrac\Express\Client\EQSharedEngine.exe") then ' launch the installer sCmd = "msiexec.exe /i " & chr(34) & "\\ash005\Masters\Ricoh\ClientforXP\Equitrac Express Client.msi" & chr(34) & " " & "EQCASNAME=" & chr(34) & "ASH005" & chr(34) & " " & "EQLANGUAGE=" & chr(34) & "en" & chr(34) & " " & "ADDLOCAL=" & chr(34) & "Common,DesktopPrinting,ClientBilling,CostPreview,WindowsPrinting,DRC,InteractiveRules" & chr(34) & " /q" 'msgbox sCmd objShell.Run sCmd,0 ,true End If Thanks again to everyone that replied, even tho the MST way didn't work I learnt a load about how to make them
-
Right since it's half term I might actually have time to look into this today, @ Arthur if I used the MST file I would roll it out via GP as that is what I wanted to achieve after reading mavhc's post. Your link to the ICE87 Addlocal property looks really helpful tho so I'm going to look at that and see if I can get the MST working. If not I think mac_shinobi's post will work.... Thanks All
-
Hi HilcrRWise, Sorry for the late reply I didn't realise you posted as I didn't get a e-mail alert! I tried what you said and the good news is its didn't error the bad news is it didn't do anything either mavhc I tried to create a MST and found the EQCASNAME & EQLANGUAGE property in orca so added these fields and the program installs. However I don't now how to select the features. I found a feature table but can not find a ADDLOCAL property and if I did would I have to add multiple ADDLOCAL rows for each feature or could I add them like I'm tried to in the above. Please see attached and hopefully it makes sense, if you have done this before and can help I would be eternally greatful
-
I have a few times before but I have no idea where in the MST I would put these variables, I'll open it up in orca and see if I can do it. Thanks for the idea.... haven't done anything like that for ages so didn't consider it a option.

I did just try and move the msgbox above the "If" but I got a windows script host "illegal assignment" so I guess thats why that doesn't work. Please help as you can see I don't really know what I'm doing :0s This is what it looked like before I tried to add the testing msgbox etc dim objShell, fs set fs=CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") ' check to see if its installed If fs.FolderExists("C:\Program Files\Equitrac\Express\Client\EQSharedEngine.exe") then ' launch the installer objShell.Run "msiexec.exe /i \\ash005\Masters\Ricoh\ClientforXP\Equitrac Express Client.msi" & "EQCASNAME"="ASH005" & "EQLANGUAGE"="en" & "ADDLOCAL=""Common,DesktopPrinting,ClientBilling,CostPreview,WindowsPrinting,DRC,InteractiveRules",0,true End If

Hi all, I trying to deploy a msi with parameters via a vb script. I have written the below (most of it I found ion the internet and change). I have stopped all the errors that were popping up but I'm stuck now because it doesn't error or do anything LOL, could any one help? I put the line dim in a vain attempt to try and write the line to a message box so I could see what it displayed like with all the &'s in but this doesn't even show up. dim objShell, fs, test set fs=CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") ' check to see if its installed If fs.FolderExists("C:\Program Files\Equitrac\Express\Client\EQSharedEngine.exe") then ' launch the installer test = "msiexec.exe /i \\ash005\Masters\Ricoh\ClientforXP\Equitrac Express Client.msi" & "EQCASNAME"="ASH005" & "EQLANGUAGE"="en" & "ADDLOCAL=""Common,DesktopPrinting,ClientBilling,CostPreview,WindowsPrinting,DRC,InteractiveRules" MsgBox = test objShell.Run "msiexec.exe /i \\ash005\Masters\Ricoh\ClientforXP\Equitrac Express Client.msi" & "EQCASNAME"="ASH005" & "EQLANGUAGE"="en" & "ADDLOCAL=""Common,DesktopPrinting,ClientBilling,CostPreview,WindowsPrinting,DRC,InteractiveRules",0,true End If

I have been going though my DNS to check there are no issues I have found _msdcs, _sites, _tcp, _tls, _udp entries all fine but I have a 26 folder under my domain.org.uk too? Under the folder simply named "26" there is a "2" then a "140" and in there a host record name 10, data 10.140.2.26 which is the IP address of a HP lasrejet 4050??? Does anyone know what this entry could be? Could someone have put it in there manually? Thanks Duncan
