I've been asked for advice on types of SSL certificate for a website. At the minute they use let's encrypt setup to auto renew. Is it worth upgrading to a paid service to get an OV certificate rather than the DV certificate that's the only option with let's encrypt? Thanks in advance

A colleague picked up a box of VGA cables which collapsed under its own weight and dumped then all over the floor. I helped by scooping them up and transferring straight to WEE. Less than an hour later a user came in asking for 5 VGA cables.... That has slowed down my mission to get rid of unnecessary cables [emoji17]

What did you use in lockdown for remote/hybrid teaching? For monitoring content, pupil engagement, behaviour etc I can't see you need more than a webcam on a stick. The sound and the auto-framing work very well for the simplicity of setup and I thought they were reasonable value at the price we paid (£800)

I know UPS's can fail suddenly and for no apparent reason, but the only reason I've had a catastrophic UPS failure was a lightning strike. The UPS saved the server, so I wouldn't plug a server directly into the mains. Maybe split the supply across the two UPS's? And make use of the (parachute?) UPS monitoring software which might give advance warning if issues with the UPS?

I don't think it's political or biased to say it's appalling that any system/bank/company can get away with doing this to even a limited number of customers (people). To claim that someone is too high a risk to lend to at 4% or 6% when they've made the mortgage payments at 12%, 15% 18% is patently unreasonable. There should be some kind of regulation preventing it. At those payments I'd have completely paid off my mortgage in 6 years at the high street rates.

I agree, but.... They are and however strong the case made by the IT department it's very unlikely to change. And... I suspect it may be a historic contractual matter and relate to continuity of service and pension contributions for teachers moving schools. Most teachers' contracts start in September and their pay is annualised. By the time they leave in July, they haven't been paid for the work they've done - it's made up by what they're paid in July and August. Yes, most of them do some work over the holidays, but that's what creates this issue. If they don't move, they're paid by the school they're at. If they move the school they're moving from loses out, but that's the way it goes and budgets probably even out over the years. That also could be fixed but is very unlikely to be. At the end of the day, they're employed and being funded by central government, but distribution of the money is delegated to individual schools. My personal view (not a definitive statement of the correct answer) is that it's a risk, but one that can be mitigated and the benefits outweigh the risk if done properly. (Training, AUP, confidentiality agreement etc).

As @GrumbleDook says, it's a regular item. I have changed my view slightly and would now come down on the side of giving access early. Teaching contracts are a bit weird - generally the contract from the school you're leaving is in force until the end of the summer holiday - even though the chances are they won't do any work for that school and there's good reason to do work for the school they're joining. As others have said, you can cover this with documentation/training other than start of contract. The employment contract is not the only thing that commits you to follow rules. Teaching is also a licensed profession. If a teacher doesn't uphold professional standards, they could lose their right to have a job as a teacher. As a final thought, the teacher has responsibility for the well-being of the students from the beginning of the first day. Isn't the bigger risk to student welfare/reputation of the school from the teacher not knowing about needs of pupils in their care before they start?

We use the "sync known folders" option. If you let people save stuff on the desktop, sync it. If you don't sync it, stop people saving stuff there.

The DPIA is to ensure that you have assessed the risks of giving someone your data - don't trust the person you're giving the data to to check that they're suitable people to give data to. It is a requirement every time you share data. So your DPO should be able to give you a template - and show you the ones they completed for each of the online services your school has signed up to.

I think you might find that it had inadvertently (but usefully) stored Bitlocker recovery keys against the device record. My understanding is that if you want to apply conditional access policies to data on your M365 tenancy, you need to register devices even if they don't belong to your organisation. But if they're not devices belonging to your organisation, there's probably no great need.

This sounds like you should be using a shared mailbox and then delegating rights for individuals to be able to send and read emails. They shouldn't need to share a password.

If the alleged problem is with goods from a Chinese manufacturer you won't do much better than a Korean supplier. They act on their concerns much more actively than we do in the UK. No comment on whether concerns are justified - everyone can take their own view/risk assessment.
