I've updated the code that ICTNUT posted earlier about the warning icons, however - I still find that we have a couple of services (that we monitor) are stopped - yet the program still says all is OK. Did I miss something or should it alert on service failure? Cheers, Az

Afternoon... yes I'm posting late - so sue me - busy busy day. My weekend blew more than a hurricane on a wind farm. I get in to find the main Cert Authority has decided to hang itself - not usually a problem except there was no backup. A rebuild later and I've got to tell people that all their offline certificates are now useless, then I get handed a laptop that "doesn't work". Quick check later - it doesn't work because it's full of viruses and nasties lurking - why? One of the bugs that ICTNUT noted was that sometimes the front-page didn't display the correct status for servers. For example, a PING failure should be an error, a service-failure should be a warning and all OK should be OK. However - that's not what I'm finding, a PING comes up as a warning and everything else comes up as OK. So in order to get accurate status on the servers, we have to use the admin page overview tab. Any news on the fixes to 1.5.5 yet? I'm not trying to rush but we'd like to start using it in anger as a monitoring tool which we can't currently do without giving people access to the admin page overview - which we really don't want to do Cheers, Az

Not sure whether this is a bug or not - but we have some services (that are monitored) as 'stopped' yet it doesn't flag them as a warning or an error on the main page? If I go into the Admin area and look at Overview - it does show them as being stopped there but it should also show it in the main page also perhaps. What criteria must be met in order to make a server go from 'OK' to 'WARNING' or 'ERROR' on the main page? I know if it can't PING the server, it flags it as a warning - is there anything else, am I missing something? It's lovely stuff otherwise tho ICTNUT Az

I wasn't sure if Smoothwall could do what he's asking but if there's any chance - go for it. It'll undoubtedly be cheaper than ISA and if you have issues with it, we have several people here on the forums who use it and love it. Az

We've done what you're looking at - while we didn't use Ruckus, our licensing agreement with MS lets us use things like ISA Server, this may or may not be an option for you. In short: Pick up some Wireless APs - put these in a separate VLAN and IP Range from the rest of your network, thus creating a perimeter. Your wireless clients will then get IPs from the server you choose to sit on that wireless network and hand out DHCP/DNS and other services. As I'm not familiar with Ruckus - I can't help you much with that but ZeroShell is a free Linux-based 'captive portal' solution. It can integrate with AD or any other kind of database if you need authentication. This way - your clients just come in, connect to your wifi and surf away, they can't access the main network as that's a separate thing entirely. It's hard to put what you can do into words without saying 'Use ISA Server' - as that's what we use. Hopefully something I've said here will give you some ideas as to how you can achieve this with hopefully, little expenditure and a little bit of work to get it initially working. HTH, Az

They may not show up if their Windows Update Agent isn't working properly or any of the Windows Update architecture is damaged. A good idea is to put 2 PCs into the WSUS GPO (so they get pointed to it). Have one as is, tell it to look for updates and do the wuauclt /detectnow command. The other one - install the latest version of Windows Update Agent and BITS. Reboot it and then do above. Eh... just saw you got hit by conficker. Sorry to hear about that man. Az

Aha - this explains my confusion. I also don't think you need to use MDT2010 for Windows 7 but as we use SCCM for our images (or we will do) then it's a little difficult to point you in the right direction. As long as Windows SIM supports Windows 7 - you should be fine. Az

First I tried Spark - this didn't connect at all. I am now using Pidgin (Windows 7 x64). The debug log simply tells me that the 'Server closed the connection'. I have tried both of our proxies, filtered and unfiltered - same result irrespective of what I try. Any ideas? Az

Whilst I'm sure you may be right about your XP image, I've never heard of an XP image that doesn't need sysprep in some way or another. Even at the basic level - you'd need sysprep to regenerate your SIDs, which if you neglect to do can cause all kinds of problems on an AD-based network. If you don't need sysprep - I'd be curious as to how your XP image works. Az Edit: Ah - forgot to look at MDT... will take a quick peek at what we have here as we haven't used it to push out 7. I just know that for SCCM - you need MDT2010 to be able to push out 7. Will take a look and see what we have.

Don't see why it wouldn't be possible - R2 only really adds Windows 7 based support to several items, but I don't believe WDS is one of them as MDT2010 adds that support for WDS. You'd have to have seperate images for XP and Win 7 due to the methods of sysprep used - but other than that you should be able to do it and I can't see a real reason why it wouldn't work. Az

As cookie_monster just said - Local Admin rights may be the way to go, however if you combine these rights with group policy restrictions - you could give him the underlying rights while removing some of the more dangerous parts in theory. Another way you could do it - is to add him to a domain group and grant that group specific admin rights on a local PC, particularly c:\windows etc... So that they have the underlying rights to install software like an admin would, but they don't have some of the other parts. It all depends how you want to do it really - we just give people local admin where they need it and if they break the PC, they live without it for a while - we eventually get around to it, they lose their local admin rights and we reimage the PC in question. Fortunately though we have a very limited audience who have any kind of admin rights Az

As long as you have a solid backup - you should be golden. I'd be more inclined to remove your old disks - put in the new disks and THEN destroy the array data. Some cards store the RAID configuration on the card itself, some can store info on the disks themselves as well as the card. It's hard to know, but if it's a reasonably decent (and newish) card it should be able to re-read the RAID config from your old disks if it really goes TU. Put your new disks in, break the array - initialise the disks (or clear them, whichever is right for your card) and then build the new array. This ensures that your disks are good, the RAID is built and all ready to go. You then can simply use the Acronis restore CD to simply restore straight back - you shouldn't need Universal Restore as long as it's the same hardware. As stated though - a firmware update may not be a bad thing, but check it before you commit to undertaking the task. But what you've outlined does sound like it should work okay - just play it safe tho, check those backups before you wipe - it's all too easy to wipe and then realise your backups aren't quite as stable or as good as you hoped... been there, done that - much pain.
