Quick straw poll, what are you using on your root user share for redirected documents data? The last MS doc I was working from (before 7) shows Everyone for the ability to Create Folder \ Traverse etc although the sticky thread guide shows slightly different permissions. How is it secured though, have you got some sort of SSL on there or making connections through VPN?

Following on from the Remote Access thread it seems I'm not imagining things and the Server 2008 R2 Remote Access components aren't really up to scratch so need something that can do the following... - provide a "desktop" session either as VDI or terminal services - be accessible over a secure connection - easy to access from a user perspective with a single logon (their network username) I know there's the likes of XenDesktop but think that requires an additional gateway component? Not sure if View is the same?

Glad I'm not the only one to have experienced it... was beginning to wonder if I was going mad Will probably have to do it via an SSL VPN and just provide a link to an RDP session that way, very frustrating as the MS product *should* be spot on but there's some glaring design errors there. It's almost like it was done by a couple of developers in a corner somewhere who never received any direction on the end user experience

Wonder if that means Moodlerooms have took over development of the plugin from MS? Sounds like exactly the same feature set of the one we're using at the moment... maybe with the consent bug ironed out at last? Edit: just checked Education Labs, it appears Moodlerooms are doing the work for Moodle 2.x

For those with scripts for Favorites is that for XP on 7? Thought 7 had all that pretty much sorted now? We've got folder redirection on with My Documents, Desktop etc at the moment but Appdata \ roaming profilles is a bit of a mess... going to 7 should sort that out though (but will probably create a whole new set of problems instead )

Out of interest why do you use home folders set on the user fields rather than My Documents redirection? I do it the other way around for admin staff, redirect all documents to \\server\usershare via GPO then just add an extra script to map a drive if they prefer to work that way

Using thin disks for it on VMWare - works fine Not sure how clever VHDs are compared to VMDKs when used thin though...

This is a great advert for N+1 virtual host design... if your capacity suits 2 servers get 3 so in case of failure the remaining host doesn't get overwhelmed... does depend on budget I guess but always worth bearing in mind...

Just wondering who is running a UTM-style appliance with application-level control and how is it working for you? Reason being we want to implement BYOD wireless access but without some way of controlling the usage and bandwidth of applications such as iPlayer, YouTube and suchlike I can see it being a free for all killing our Internet connection. As a result I'm looking at a new firewall appliance with app-level control being one of the key features... needs to service 300-350 desktops plus however many we get on guest wi-fi (50-100 perhaps?) Thus far Palo Alto really stands out on app-level control but not sure if their smaller box (which comes in at around £1300 for the box plus £800ish for licensing) has enough grunt... define "enterprise branch office" http://www.paloaltonetworks.com/products/platforms/pa-200.html Gut instinct says the PA-500 is a better long-term bet but support costs double (they never miss a trick do they!) Others that I've looked at... Sonicwall, seems to have the feature set but not sure how good the app control is in practice Fortinet, pricier than Sonicwall and same question over app-level control Watchguard, has some level of app control but seems to be pricey (had a quote for an XTM 520 that's on a level with the PA-500 Palo Alto box) We'll have to use content filtering that comes with the firewall for now, not expecting any of them to be brilliant in that regard but will do the job for now...

Once you're in the RDP session policy should apply on the Terminal Server session though or am I missing something obvious?

Unfortunately not as those home users will be running Windows 7 Home Premium Maybe with organisation owned laptops it could be an option but then I'd rather invest in a device-agnostic remote access solution than have smooth access tied down to a specific set of devices. MS seem to sell DirectAccess as a solution for branch offices and what with having to install a multihomed server directly facing the Internet I'm not entirely convinced for now... Adito sounds interesting, especially if it's single entry of credentials and then straight into RDP... better than Microsoft's native RDS solution if it works

@ScottLogan, can you explain how this will work for staff using their own kit at home where the OS can be anything from XP to Mac OS because as far as I can see it won't... It's bad enough having products that are Win7 only, let alone specific variants of that. Seems OK if you want to set up PCs in small outcentre offices (might look at it for us on that front) but for home use seems a complete no-go to me.

Yup the Server 2003 one looks to work a lot better, not sure what the design team were smoking with the 2008 setup... login in order to login again? Not sure if the 2003 version is as secure though (is there SSL etc?)

What clients are your staff running? Does your login process go something like this... - IE only browser support (quelle surprise) - login to https://yourdomain/rdweb - have to enter DOMAIN\username format credentials, completely different to OWA where they only need to enter their standard network username (I've edited the login page to add the DOMAIN part) - on XP SP3 the ActiveX control is often disabled by the OS so you need a Microsoft FixIt tool to enable it via registry - user then sees a list of RemoteApps displayed along with the Remote Desktop icon for a direct session - great - but when loading a RemoteApp you get a warning box about the publisher (even with SSL all sorted out) that you have to dismiss - if loading the Remote Desktop session you get prompted for credentials a second time (at least in 7 it remembers the username but not with XP). Hotfix is available for 7 but again it's another patch to install. If using XP SP3 clients you have to make sure they have RDC 7.0 installed or WebSSO doesn't work and RemoteApp asks for credentials a 2nd time. I also found unless CredSSP is enabled it can be a bit flaky (patch + reboot required) If yours works more smoothly I'd love to know how as MS haven't made any suggestions to fix any of the above on Technet Just noticed you mentioned Server 2003, think it's a different setup on there from what I remember...
