The teachers have requested access to the student folders from off site. "Sure thing." I say before I snicker at their ignorance about all things computerish as they walk away. These student folder are divided up by graduation year, then by student. Teachers have read/write access to all files. Students have access to their grade year as read, and read/write access to their folder. I set up IIS on the file server, made the root of the student folders home to IIS, (no index.php or html, so they can just lok at the folders/files for now). Works great. I then went to the Authentication Access Controll in IIS and removed anon user and added Digest Authent for windows domain... Went back to the site and it requires me to add my user/pass.. I then logged out, and was also able to log in as a student and see the same as a teacher. (So they could technically cheat by looking at other students files.) I do have the teachers and students into seperate groups on the domain however, so is there a way to only give access to the Teachers group in IIS? Thanks!

For internal sites (I have them all on one IIS server, same IP) and I create a Group Policy to place the links in their IE bookmarks. So all they see is EMAIL WIKI SUBLIST but the link is 10.50.22.55/wiki, 10.50.22.55/exchange, 10.50.22.55/sublist etc. I figure if it's only going to used internally, and their web browser favorites is their 'internal web portal' then all is good.

I'm really hoping there is a quick and easy answer for this USB drive issue we're having. Some USB drives have software of some kind requiring students and teachers to have admin rights to use the USB drive. Is there a way around this?

Fixed. For some reason, (I like to blame it most things on the other admin on campus) the port was blocked on the firewall. Thanks for the help!

I had to rebuild my webserver and now I can't remote into it from home. I was able to prior to the rebuild using Remote Desktop Connection. I can ping the server from home. There are no firewall ports in the way. I can remote into the server while on site, but not from outside the lan. The website and OWA works fine. Any ideas?

I have IIS and Apache on the same server. for OWA only, i'm using IIS. On a test server I changed the deafult webpage port on IIS to 81, then tested to see if i could get to either webserver using port 81 as the trigger. for example OpenDNS would bring up a test file on the IIS server while OpenDNS would bring up a test file on the apache server. I was hoping I could use this direction to run OWA on IIS. Results. The login works, I get a login, then it directs me to a dead page. I have taken down apache and changed the port back to 80 and OWA works fine. Any thoughts on how I can get OWA to work this way? ps, if you need any additional info let me know. Thanks!

Actually, a NAS would be perfect (minus the firesafe protection, but hey, if the school goes down Student_A wont need a backup retrieved.) Any suggestion to backup software? NTBackup? We've been using Veritas.

We had a tape drive go on the fritz a few days ago and the cost or repairing it is $4 less than buying a new one. Our total full backup is 100Gigs for us, but our nightly backup couldn't be more than 1gig. Knowing how little it is, I was thinking of not buying a new tape backup but rather looking into an online backup service. Does anybody have experience with one, have feedback or any real world info that may be useful? Thanks

On a Win2003 server is where we have all of our network printers as a print server. All has run great for a few years now. XP clients. Yesterday, I added an additional printer as normal. But then when somebody would send a print job to any of the HP1022n printers, the print spooler on the Win2003 would stop and all network printers would be off line. Not good. After uninstalling, reinstalling new drivers and resetting and adding etc etc over and over with almost all printers, I still cant find the problem. I have about 15 of the HP1022n printers, they all use the same driver so I dont think it's a driver issue. Any suggestions? Ideas?

Yes. I believe it's fine there. The dns/dhcp server is behind the firewall with all of our client machines, and all client machines work fine internally.

I have my address range as 10.1.x.x for my DHCP. Machines assigned and ip of 10.1.1.x can access the internet but anything with 10.1.2.x can not. I've changed the subnet to 255.255.0.0 on the DNS, DHCP server (NICs Static IP Configuration) and the Firewall/Gateway. What am I missing? Any suggestions?

About a week ago I rebuilt our exchange server and a few users Outlooks (both 2003 and 2007) are having troubles connecting to it. The old exchange server named “emailserver” was replaced with “emailserver2”. Both the same IP and in DNS I have a CNAME that should shoot requests to ‘emailserver’ directly over to ‘emailserver2’. Regardless, the server works and the problem I’m having is on the client side of only a few users. One in particular is posing the following problem. When outlook 2007 starts for this user, it prompts a “Old Data”, “Temporary Mailbox” or “Cancel” option. This is exactly what happens with the other users that are having troubles connecting to the new email server. To resolve this, I go to Control Panel and to MAIL and remove the current mailbox user, and then add them again with a direct server name to ‘emailserver2’. This user’s mailbox however will not let me remove her from the MAIL on the client side. I’m sorry I don’t have the error message in front of me (she’s busy on her machine now, but I’ll retrieve it later when I’m able.) I’ve tried uninstalling Office 2007 and reinstalling it, but I still could not remove her email account from the MAIL. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

I did the /distasterrecovery switch because Exchange Objects still reside in AD. I was hoping that it would grab that info and 'run with it'. If i change the server name, wont the client machines all need to be retargeted to the new exchange server name? Thats really the only reason I wanted to keep it the same name. I do have the mailboxs backed up.

We're upgrading our server from a raid 1 to a raid 5 with larger hard drives finally. Doing so, we had to replace the onboard raid controller. So far, no problems. I created an image of GEORGE (the server) with the hopes that i could just pop in the new hardware and zap the image onto the newly upgraded machine thinking that raid happends behind the scenes of the OS and the image should take just fine.... Theory and logic sometimes gets the best of me. failed. No problem I say to myself, I'll rebuild the server with the same name and ip, I'll import the database and in a ew hours we'll be up and running... failed. I removed GEORGE from AD and did a i386/setup /disasterrecovery and it acted as though it installed just fine. But when I go to System Manager (the Exchange manager) I cannot connect to GEORGE. "You can not connect to GEORGE, check all your connections and try again... " What??? What do I need to disable, remove or destroy so I can put this exchange server back online (with the same name). It's now been 24hrs with no Email for the Admin office, and they are officially holding my paycheck hostage.

For exchange it's a process called journaling, we're going to be using it on our student emails in a few months, and it never occurred to me to use this to keep a copy of all staff emails also. The 90 days is in Colorado (u.s.), and I'm almost certain it's only 90 days.

That's not a bad idea actually. I think there is a Journaling option in Exchange. I should look into that. Thanks!

A law was passed (last year I believe) that requires our school to keep a record of all incoming and outgoing emails for no less than 90 days. If you already do this, what product or method do you use to achieve this?

I've been looking for a list of badwords, and can't really find any. I'm adding keyword URL filtering to my ISA server and although I've added a ton of words I know that aren't suitable for school use , I know there are more out there. If anybody has a list, please let me know.

O'Reilly School of Technology I'm taking the PHP class. It has been great. The online courses have been very easy to read and understand. I can't speak about any of the other courses, but the PHP has been awsome. I would recommend it to a friend =)

I figure this may be the best place to pose this question, please let me know otherwise. Our joomla 1.0x site is on our windows 2003 server with IIS. I've installed FastCGI and have seen a great increase in speed. Now that everything is running smooth (and it has for some time) I need to install or add the GD library for php support. The only way to do this that I know of is to run the PHP installer again and enable GD support then in the PHP.ini file open that extension. Is there another way to do this, or a better way to add GD support?
