Hi all, Looking at a plan for the above departments, with Art they do photography, graphics etc and with Media they use Final Cut studio and Adobe In-design so files will be quite large. So far I am thinking of getting a SAN where they can save these files to, but not sure how to go about the backing up part. I would;t want to backup all this data along with our current backup system as I think it would take far to long. What have other schools done to accommodate this and how are they backing up and archiving all this data? Thanks Jay

For our Sims server I use the LEA remote backup solution called Attix5, it is very good, the restore did not take long. For the rest of the servers we use backup exec 12.5 to disk storage then to tape.

Thought I would share my experience of a Sims Server crash Well it has been one of those weeks and our Sims server crashed and we lost Sims, so have spent today re-installing the OS and then restoring Sims from backup, the problem was that it crashed yesterday late afternoon so the backup was from the night before. We have Sims running on a HP G5 DL380, the hdd's are raided, I had replaced one drive a few weeks ago that had failed with no problems, the raid controller showed no problems the HP insight software said everything was fine. From what I saw it looks like the raid controller failed which in turn totally screwed the raid array which in turn crashed the server and also crashed SQL. I need to deal with all the lost registers and reports now which I'm sure will be great fun I have never had a server go like that on me before, especially a HP server, in light of this I need to research how if it happens again (never say never and all that) do I reduce the lose of data. My question: Is there a way you can run a schedule to export Sims registers in one go at the end of the day, and what format could you do it in, excel file for example ?? Im not sure I would be able to do anything with things like assessment manager as it depends on the database file.

Some strong glues can eat in to the plastic, how about using something like adhesive pads like the one's people use to stick number plates on cars, they are extremely strong.

I played the 2 previous COD's and thought they were good, I'm not a full on gamer but have a xbox 360 for those times when your a bit bored, I only went out of my way to buy this one because of the price, I think average price for console games is about £40-£50

Got mine from Sainsburys today as well, no que at all which was nice

We use Parago here, was quick to setup and the reports you can produce are great, we also got a PDA with it which meant we could scan some barcodes (Dell bar-codes were to small to scan) straight in to the online database.

One of our teachers would like me to unblock FaceBook so staff and students can join faceBook international school groups for part of the international schools process, I really don't want to unblock faceBook and was wondering if any other schools do anything similar or know of a way round this ?

We have 10 Ebeam Projection's and they work great, they have been installed for about 4 months now and have had no problems with them. Teachers seem to getting on fine with them and the pens are very robust. Ours are fixed in place, the install was very easy and they come with 3 or 4 different backplates to suit your enviroment for wall mounting.

Hi All, I can not find the above software, I did have it on my Sims drive but it's gone now, have looked on the net and have logged call with our Sims support people, was wondering if any on here had it which they could email to me please ? Thanks Jay

Elo all, Anyone come across this device before ?, looks like quite a smart device : POCKETSURFER 2 LITE - Misco.co.uk

For me I would save the money and buy a Ebeam instead, we have mostly Promethean boards at our school but a lot of our teachers do not use the full capabilities of active studio, they would rather show there power points and write a few notes. The Ebeam software allows you to write notes on your power point slides and save it in a ppt format.

I had a recent demo from Ebeam and was very impressed by it, had a couple of demo units for a few weeks and trialled it with teachers, they loved it, we are buying quite a few next month and only getting ceiling mounted projectors now. Teachers did not notice any lag and found the pen much better to use then the Promethean ones. They will be fixed on the whiteboards, and we will keep one in the office for senior/gov meetings which would only take 5 minutes if that to set it up.

hate it at the moment, are any other schools that have the above setup having problems with class lists, reg groups etc not updating due to a problem with Kaleidos not being able to look at the schools new time table as ours is stuck on last years and was told by Kaleidos it could take 6-8 weeks to sort it out as they don't know what the problem is at the moment

We had the same problem quite a few months ago, Attix have a updated plugin which solves the problem, our LEA got the update for us.

I'm with virgin media, and have to say never had a problem with them in 4 years, just got my 4MB connection upgraded to 10MB for free I have just purchased a wireless router and it's been fantastic, was very easy to setup as well, I also use Vuze Buffalo AirStation 125Mbps High Power Turbo G Wire - Misco.co.uk Should haver asked whether you have the ADSL virgin broadband or is it DSL as the router above is for DSL, but I'm sure they have a ADSL version as well

I would look at a HP from Misco, they got some good deals on at the mo

Thank you for all the replies, I should have a few demo units to trial in the next few weeks, although RM seem to be popular, there are other manufacturers with very similar designs with much better pricing. I do think the all in one option is going to be much better than getting a laptop trolley, should work out cheaper and also give better access to IT for the students. Do you guys/gals reckon I'm looking at this in the right way by not opting for laptop trolley's ?

Hi there, Can anyone recommend a good all in one pc and how you have found them in terms of saving space and if you have used them in IT rooms, or to put in a class room? At the moment the school I work in want to get more laptop trolley's, laptop trolley's are handy, but they can't give access all day as they need charging, are expensive to fix at times like broken screens and keyboards. My plan was to put pc';s around the bigger class room's where there is already electrics and adding extra network points would not be a problem, I could fit 15-16 pc's around the edges and have normal class room tables in the middle of the room. Has anyone tried the above and did it work ? Thanks Jay

Found out more about the problem: KB74045 - Sim .net Cannot find "C:\Documents" When trying to print the timetable Created 16/10/2007 Last Updated 22/10/2007 Affected Products SIMS .net Academic NOVA-T4 NOVA-T6 SIMS .net Reporting Notes Sims .net Reports | Print Timetables When trying to print the timetable from Reports| Print Timetables in Sims.net Additional Notes There seems to be a problem with there being spaces in the Value - so any temp file will work provided there are no spaces in the variable path. Advice This issue is still currently under investigation for the root of the problem. The current workaround for the affected workstations is to do the following: 1. Right-Click on My Computer 2. Click on Properties 3. Click on the Advanced Tab 4. Click on the Environment Variables button 5. Highlight the Variable TEMP 6. Click the Edit Button 7. Change the Value to C:\Windows\Temp 8. Click the ok button 8. Repeat Steps 6 to 8 on the Variable TMP 9. Click ok I did the above and it solved my problem

Like Boo, I have tried many things to get this stupid lame file to work with Audacity and it's just not happening, is there any way that the lame file can just be found without having to point to it every time ?
