We got bollocked for using Dameware by the NGFL..."not authorised software". Sod 'em-they use RAdmin, and that does an OK job. If you are using RAdmin though-download the latest V3 viewer. It's much better.

The best one I've ever seen was the company mounting the projector in music...hole saw through ceiling tile, quite happy....now muggins here has been in the building 5 years, knows the gen. Wandered in to look at the job, jumper over my face, sighed, and pointed out the warning on the back of the ceiling tile.."CAUTION:ASBESTOS". Should have seen the room clear! Had to have the lot decontaminated..heyho.

I use it at home as well...I've even created a ghosted "universal" config for my home machines...I really hate installing XP. 4 minutes, and I'm laughing. The only thing PEbuilder has let me down on is my wifi cards..and thats me being too lazy to mod the drivers..

I was torn when I bought this Astra...mine is a 5dr with 88k on the clock, and there was an estate with 86k on it, £50 less. Most IT bods round here seem to drive an estate..and if styled accordingly, they can look quite purposeful. I reasoned an estate was probably not the best of the pair though-more likely to be tired. I was thinking of customising the astra a bit, but...I actually like it stock. The Maestro had all electrics added, a power roof, Rover heated seats, PAS, uprated brakes and the digi dash with voice synth. Strangely, I'm not missing them much yet! I'm tempted to get the "I read your e-mail" bumper sticker from thinkgeek though..or maybe "No, I will not fix your PC"

Stick with the Xantia till it dies. It's cheaper, it owes you nothing..drive it like a disposable item.. I've had the Vaux for..5 months? I regret getting rid of my old Maestro. I was also an OC member. I only sold it for the vaux because the missus might learn to drive soon, and I wanted a safer car for that. That said, the Vaux is immaculate..bloody silly design in some respects, but as you say-it'll sit at 80 all day. I've seen the 1.4s hit 115 on a "private road" test, so the 1.6 would be good for at least that.. Cheap disposable car, cheap bits. Rather have my money in the bank/BS..never know when it might be useful.

tarquel-PE Builder will allow you acces to NTFS natively, and I'm sure theres a clamwin plugin in one of the online repositories...

P reg Astra mk3 1.6 Automatic. Cost a grand, I reckon I'll get a good 5-6 years out of it. I'm an advocate of bangernomics. I want to reach at LEAST 150k miles before I replace it..I ran my Renualt on to 300k. No point in an expensive car..not in a school. 400+ miles to a tank is a bonus though. Plus, it goes well..especially if I use the "S" button..*cough*.

Our scanner got the blame for our heritage foulup....it fits in line with the keyboard, and the shift on the KB interferes with the signals from the reader, and then heritage' bad input filtering enters bad info to the database. Mind you..the wand reader is so old, it should really be replaced.

Hearing the sound of the ripcord on the mower for 10 solid minutes before you hear "It won't start-can you look at it?", and then giving it a yank fit to rip the top off it, and starting it 1st try. Watching with amusement as they try to get the car to start, and descend into swearing. Then walking over and putting the fuel pump fuse back in off the floor. Hearing "I can't get this screw undone..", before walking over with a hammer and chisel, and removing it the blokes way. Oh yes..getting a call to say "I've been trying to get the cutters to work in CAD all day, and now it's 5pm and I give up.". Then looking at the print server and unpausing from the queue..

Another one I forgot, that I got the chance to use this morning... "I'm sorry, but the systems have gone up their own arse again..".

I remember avantis...my previous school had a non avantis CD tower server, which was slow but solid. Then they bought an Avantis CDServe to supplement it...bag of...spanners. Oxford Childrens Encyclopedia hated it, and I learned to hate the entire setup. Wouldn't mind an old one now for a laugh though..can they be reused as cheap NAS style storage? As to videoconferencers...I know we have a polyspan unit sat in the old suite..used twice in 5 years. Nice unit..but nobody seems to use them anymore! Another one..flowgo's. We have several, unused. We use ID 10 T frequently.. I opt for the honest approach: "why is the system slow?" "not enough coal in the boiler..running out of steam I'm afraid". My ultimate favourite is to let the phone ring a few times, then pick it up and say something like "hello, maths.."..more often than not, people hang up...

Heritage is a meaty beast...the support (as long as you're paid up) is top notch..can't fault it. The program though...in itself good, but PICK as a database needs to die now. The engine of the package shows its age in some situations. We had a total catalogue failure due to corruption caused by insufficient error checking routines built into the inout fields...contacted Heritage,and they were happy for us to FTP our data to them, and promised to get it back to us next day. Unfortunatly, NGFL decided it was a "security risk", and wouldn't open the firewall..so we had to mail a CD instead.

I'm thankful our kids, bad as they may be sometimes, like the IT dept. Due to bad communication, a laptop and wireless presenter was left in our theatre this morning at 9...it was still there, undamaged at 2.45pm, and the place was fully open....phew. We've had laptops nicked in the past...4 off my desk for example over a holiday..but I'm far from convinced the kids did that. I still have a toshiba in a locker that needs a keyboard though..i'd forgotten that..

I use it to shutdown our PCs at night to save power costs. However, I also had cause to use it yesterday to create a telnet-esqe command prompt on a remote workstation in order to hide the contents of a childs USB stick, as they had it filled with things like a portable GTA installer etc. Of course, USB sticks aren't shared as standard..but using this remote command prompt I was able to just type "attrib +h f:\*.*". He then came in and said "I'll have to format it..it's gone faulty. It's blank, but says it's got 75mb used..". Great fun
