  1. I should add that SMART Notebook collaborative learning software can be used on computers whether or not they are connected to an interactive whiteboard. SMART Product Driver software (which includes SMART Board Service) only works with SMART Board interactive whiteboards.
  2. One SMART Notebook licence obtained with the serial number of one SMART Board interactive whiteboard is sufficient to activate many installations of SMART Notebook without SMART Notebook Math Tools. A good discussion of this is here: Smart Notebook Licence and Activation | The Whiteboard Blog Another option is SMART Notebook Express, a web-based version of SMART Notebook. It is web-based so anyone with a web-browser & Adobe Flash may use it and no licence is required. For more information see: http://express.smarttech.comhttp://express.smarttech.com
  3. All the items that may be added to SMART Floating Tools are displayed by selecting its gear icon. This opens the "Customize Floating Tools" window. Items can not be added to SMART Floating Tools from the SMART Notebook toolbar. You can customize the SMART Notebook toolbar by right-clicking on it anywhere that is blank. This should open the "Customize Toolbar" window.
  4. Ensure you're logged in with local administration rights and permissions and have current updates recommended by Microsoft Update installed. You will want to also have Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client and Visual C++ 2008 and 2010 installed. Also confirm in System Configuration (msconfig.exe) you have normal bootup rather than selective or diagnostic bootup selected. Then try manualling uninstalling all the SMART software listed in Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features. The run Education Software 2011 to reinstall SMART Notebook, SMART Product Drivers and Common Files: visit smarttech.com and select Support > Downloads > "10.8 for Windows" under SMART Notebook. If the issue persists, contact SMART Support directly by phone or web form.
  5. If this is occurring on a Microsoft Windows computer with SMART Product Drivers installed, close SMARTBoardTools.exe in Task Manager > Processes. Then search for the location of: FloatingToolsSmall.xml. On a Windows XP computer this XML file's default location is here: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\SMART Technologies\SMART Board Drivers. Delete this file and the other files within this specific SMART Board Drivers folder. Restart SMART Board Tools and you should have the default Floating Toolbar restored. If this fix does not work, please contact SMART Support.
