  1. This thread has made me laugh as I rememeber a construction firm cutting through our installed fibre...of course they denied it. Once on site we carried out an OTDR which gave us a pretty accurate idea of where the fibre was damaged, walking the installed run of fibre we got closer and closer to the location yup right next to a chap working a JCB digger lol. the underground trench had been smashed and there was our fibre it appeared to be in one piece though :-/ hmmmmm after pulling on the fibre it came clean out of the trench with what looked like electrical tape wrapped round it to "hide/make good" the damaged fibre INCREDIBLE! of course the building contractor paid up for a complete new fibre install :-D

I would go with your cabler's idea of running a new (8-core) from Y to Z run diversly from your existing fibre I would also go with a new 8-core between X & Z budget permitting New 8-core across from X to W and patch via spare cores back to Y as others have suggested this setup would then offer you some resilience / failover (rare event) should your old 8 core fibre fail Either manually repatch all links or of course you could apply spanning tree and have an automated failover sounds confusing but it isnt really cheers Stef
  3. The DTX would do the job perfectly tests cable integrity in less than 9 seconds! Cat5e, Cat6 and of course Cat6A will even test your fibre segments with the OTDR module

Hi Jaymate, I would imagine a white glossed wall would be highly reflective with the Short throw projector, options avaialable could be to install a manual pull down screen or I have seen short throws projected onto magnolia coloured walls you mention dining hall would this also be used for sports? if so damage might be a an issue as the short throw will be dificult to protect cheers Stef

  6. Hi, you mention 100Mb link between sites are these local sites on the school campus or further apart? is the 100mb link an internet link provided by your ISP or a local fibre / copper cable between blocks or buildings on the same campus cheers stef

  8. Have you tried to install a Promethean 378 Pro with integrated electronic wall crawler ? I would hazzard a guess at no ...training 100% advised
  9. lol and when the thing falls off the wall I wouldnt want to be the the "un-trained" individual who put it up in the first place especially as the majority of these units are being operated by little people in schools
  10. It would be nce to see a Promethean official response ;-) BTW I am in no way related to AVN Matrix or this particular solution so my coments are not biased

Hi Ben, If an installed Active board suffers problems that need to be directed back to Promethean and they get an inkling a non trained installer have carried out the installation work they will jump on this imediately and try any which way to wriggle off the hook as regards supporting the equipment. Also Promethean never issue fitting instructions with equipment as they will expect you to use a fully trained installer. just a heads up really as £480 saving on what is £20-30K worth of installation migth not be worthwhile should problems be encountered later on
  12. Either way check if the company have actually attended a Promethean installer training course, if you get problems later the work will not be covered under the warranty program provided by Promethean.

Hi Massy, im amazed the building contractor has even asked you for your input, ive witnessed projects like this before whereby the infrastructue is installed and they leave you to your own devises to "connect" up, failing this contractors need only offer a connection and as such put the cheapest equipment in. Find out if there is a budget assigned and if so opt for the best you can, a couple of 48 port HP Procurves with 1Gb fibre modules should be your "entry level" within the New Build but you must also consider a 3rd unit placed within the old school to support the new fibre link running at a gig. Ideally a new chassis based HP5412zl would sit nicely in the new build and would offer a reasonable amount of future expandability i.e 10Gb options, power over ethernet, managed wireless etc etc Also you mentioned you have 100 x Cat6A segments installed thats impressive! 10Gb ready copper cabling to all areas make sure you get those all important test documents Also find out the specification and number of cores of fibre you have had installed and once again I cant stress this enough dont forget those test results. ;-)
