There's a Microsoft tech article which talks you through shutting this bandit down. Helped me when I was hit with this within weeks of starting in this job. Restrict access to svchost across the site, and run MSRT at startup on all clients for a while. Check Scheduled Tasks on all servers. I eventually traced our outbreak back to a couple of vanilla machines in our canteen. There is also a patch which was pre-SP3 I think.

Exactly my reasoning.

I've started buying them as replacements for knackered laptop HDs for staff laptops, and really want to stick them in a suite of Dell Optiplex's we have, alongside a RAM upgrade, to get a couple more years out of them.

They've got no-one to teach it.

I keep them afloat by buying every WW2-related book they stock.

The only tapes I hold for each server are: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri 1, Fri 2, Fri 3, Fri 4, Fri 5. All full backups. I tend to take a backup of year 11 leavers' work each summer, but beyond that I'm a bit handicapped by shortage of media for additional sets.

I have had a few similar issues, but like everything else I put it down to smartcache being horrific... I'll have a bit more of a test.

I've been a bit of a shambles with regard the NN meetings, it's true.

We used to charge out for printing, but don't any longer. We budget for a certain usage (1.6 million copies I think), and then allocate this to departments based on their student numbers. They only incur cost if they use this allocation up before the new financial year. That's the idea anyway. Previously before Papercut departments had to put in for capitation early doors with their main budgets, but as we had no way of tracking their printing, it led to some disastrous situations come the end of the year when readings were taken.

With regard to that specific problem, we're in the process of setting up centralised pull printing on our ricoh copiers, meaning staff will need to login and manually print the jobs they send into the queue, meaning work won't simply be left in the tray waiting to be collected. Works from a confidentiality point of view as well, which has often been used in the past to justify the installation of additional printers in offices and other locations. On a wider scale, we allocate each department a printing allowance for the year, which the HOD has control over, and charge them if they use more than this amount. Department heads can track the usage of staff within their departments, and staff are made very aware of just how much printing they're doing, and how much it's costing. Just making the cost of the printing visible as it's happening seems to have an impact on the way people use the printing facilities. It's a constant battle though, I won't lie. If everyone had their way we'd have a printer in every room in the school; maybe more. I'm of the opinion that staff are encouraged to prepare properly, and this should be the case with printing as well. Not everything is going to be available right in front of you, right now.
