If it's blown caps, you can probably get a swapout from Dell. If it's not blown caps, you could maybe convince them to blow, GOTO 10 We've got a handful of GX280s which have ultimately all had their mobos replaced.

He may not get a 15TB (usable) SAN for that price either, though I do get your point. The question boils down to whether you have enough data to warrant it. If you can fill a single server with over 1TB, you may well be fine for space for the life of the server. At the end of the day you will still need servers in addition to your SAN and depending how you have it set up, you may need backup licenses for them too. You will also need to backup the SAN, unless you have 2 in different locations Without 2 you have a single point of failure which might be hard to recover - again it depends on your circumstances. Everyone here can do the numbers for themselves quite quickly and I'll bet for some folks SANs will work out cheaper over 5-10 years. For us it seems to still be too early.

He's got XP according to the first post, but the reg keys are in the same place as win2k. The permission changes basically deny the user access to find out what program is executed when you choose "Explore" or "Open" so it fails.

If you were in a Blowing School Funds project it would probably be worth looking at, but for our setup I looked at it recently and couldn't find anything approaching value for what we wanted. For plain old file storage I can't see the benefits outweighing the costs. If you're looking at buying SAS disks especially - the prices reach stupid money quite quickly. Most of the benefits we would get can be achieved in other ways at greatly reduced cost. Considering a couple of people in this thread have had them fall over randomly as well I'm even more wary. We use PCounter here too and I've used Northern Print Control (i think that was the name) a few years ago. Both work well - PCounter has nicer licensing terms (or did 3 years ago), but isn't the most beautiful looking piece of software you'll ever use.

It might be worth asking your LEA if they are a Becta Accredited ISP, which involves automated web filtering tests being done in a sample of schools. To be honest, if they aren't blocking proxy-avoidance sites I think the answer will be "no"! They really need to sort out their filtering and their lack of accreditation could be ammo for you with SLT etc.

Our batteries all seem to be reaching the end of their lives at the moment :/ . Fortunately they aren't all like the first one I had to replace which had swelled up inside the chassis and required a screwdriver and two size 11s to remove. They don't need user accounts as such: you only need to create contact objects in AD for each one. If you have dozens that might be a pain, but there are ways of automating object creation (i'm thinking tools like csvde and ldifde). DSADD can create contacts as well, but possibly can't do the requisite Exchange voodoo.

I found this page on cisco's site about avoiding wireless interference quite useful when I was planning our setup: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/channel/deployment/guide/Channel.html If you want multiple APs in one room on different channels, you may be able to turn the power of the signal down on the APs - unfortunately I'm not familiar with your model so I can't say. It's definitely possible on Linksys APs running DD-WRT firmware. Unfortunately, as the article explains, the laptops may still be transmitting at full blast so they will cause interference between rooms.

The Viglen one ("it's learning") is actually quite nice from what I've seen of it. We had a demo account and it did seem pretty teacher-friendly. It is all hosted from one location at the moment though, where it originated in Norway, which is something they would probably need to change or at least beef up if they want to get a chunk of the UK market. If I couldn't get Moodle, it's learning would be my 2nd choice. After spending a lifetime of effort setting up older versions of classserver - probably the worst-supported microsoft product ever produced - I wouldn't touch it now with a brown sticky thing.

Out of interest, how are you enabling and disabling pupil access in Websense? Are you enabling individuals/reg groups/year groups/ everyone? We have Websense set up to block people by group memberships, but Websense will only look up what groups people are in once per hour maximum, which is useless for a school setting. Have I missed a trick?!

Try REMing out ghost.exe from your autoexec.bat so you can see any error messages which appear on screen during bootup.

could you put another nic into the firewall and hook it up to vlan2, then set the firewall/proxy server up to handle the internet access for that vlan? I guess it largely depends on what that box is running...

Sorry to dredge up a month-old thread, but has anyone looked at Microsoft's Data Protection Manager 2007 for this purpose? I couldn't find any forums hits in the search (can you do phrase searches?!). It's not all that expensive to education (not got exact figures yet, but going off american edu pricing) when compared with some of the commercial offerings from arcserve/veritas etc. and it seems to do near-continuous backups of sql server 2000/2005, exchange 2003/2007, sharepoint... and will do D>D>T backups as well if you want (I don't!). The backup is block-level a la volume shadow copy too, so presumably gives you a similar return in terms of "lifespan of backups vs. space required". Other plus points: You can also allow people to restore their own data if you are so inclined. It isn't Computer Associates Arcserve Brightstor Backup 11 Tape encryption Data deduplication to reduce storage requirements Bandwidth throttling Downsides: Needs a Windows server to run on - possibly a dedicated one, but that may be avoidable. It's not free, as mentioned above. It can't do its magic with Win2k (lack of volume shadow copy y'see) For our site it would need to go in a location away from our two server rooms OR AFAICT we'd have to set up 2 server instances I'm looking at BackupAssist as well (before anyone jumps down my throat!), but was interested if anyone had any experience/opinions on SCDPM2007..

I agree with pretty much all of that! We had one come in the other day which was 4 years old and had been used...... once! We have a one-or-the-other policy: they can have them on the Internet at home or plug them into the network here. The fad for staff laptops seems to have passed here really, coinciding strangely with the prevalence of home DVD players. Those that do use them for serious work are generally more than happy with offline files but no internet at home.

It sounds like a problem we had with authenticating to the proxy server. In IE6 some people/PCs occasionally get an error: Error Code: 403 Forbidden. The ISA Server denied the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). (12202) on the first page they load up. When they refresh the page it works. Firefox doesn't have the problem. From the monitoring I did on our ISA server I think it was caused by the page initially being requested directly, then subsequently being requested properly i.e. via the proxy server. You may be able to do some troubleshooting from your proxy server end.

Have you tried setting up software restriction policies in a GPO to block this? You may have difficulties if your login scripts run as a batch file although I'm guessing they don't.
