Hello all, I find myself in a tricky situation - I have to prepare a tender document for a VLE. We are a large secondary school which is opting to buy an off the shelf VLE which is then going to be tailored to our needs. However although we know who we want to develop the VLE we have to send an official tender out. I was asking for help in this documentation and thought if anyone had already gone through the same process whether they could share there thoughts / document Thank you in advance.

ah right - after further digging it appears as though the students are not getting their ISA settings. When the admin isa is rebooted none of the students get the internet so they must be going through the wrong ISA. I have checked AD and the students get their own policy which sets the proxy settings. However the only other place proxy settings are enabled is at the default domain policy level which points to the admin isa - so could they be picking the settings up from there? if i remove the proxy settings from the default domain policy not even staff get the internet even though they have their own policy pointing them at the admin isa!?!?! i have tested with a staff acount and the proxy settings are in IE7 but the tick box isnt enabled so IE doenst use the proxy. Can any one shed any light on why these proxy settings are not being enabled? i can bl**dy find it!

We have another ISA 2006 box which is for admin use - this wouldn't be interfering would it?

I have moved the no-Internet(Deny) rule to number 1 and its made no difference. Just applying the settings in ISA should be enought right - i dont have to restart a service or anything in order for the changes to the rules to apply?

The rules are as follows: 1) Outbound allow all outbound from internal and local host to external for all users 2) Ping allow ping from internal to all networks including local host for all users 3) Inbound RDP allow RDP from external and internal to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx for all users 4) No-Internet deny http and https from internal to external for no-Internet

Hi, I might be missing a trick here but all the students go through one ISA. installed is ISA 2006, it has the normal outbound rules etc. What i have created in AD is a security group where i can add students, so for example the group is: No-Internet. A student tester account (y8tester) is added to the above group. Then i have created an access rule in ISA to deny and redirect traffic for the AD group. The rule is as follows: deny http, https, from internal to external for No-Internet. I apply the settings however this doesnt block the internet for this y8tester account - am i missing somehting there becasue all the websites i visit say it is this easy to setup. Any help greatly appriated.

Data Protection Manager 2007 installed on a dedicated server. Installation went fine, clients installed on file servers and all protection groups setup ok. In ‘Options’ the end-user recovery tab I configured the Active Directory and enabled end user recovery. All VSS are disabled on the actual file servers. However I do not get the option of previous versions on any of the files or folders that are protected by DPM. It has been setup and running since Thursday last week so it has completed all its synchronisation etc. Does anyone have any ideas? According to Microsoft website I have followed all the steps and all went ok however its not allowing even a domain admin to recover from previous versions. Any help greatly appreciated.

The intended extra ICT Technician would be to deal with classroom issues and student issues, whilst our existing technican would currently did all intranet and internet development would look after VLE. i.e. user provision and keeping on top of it, cleaning shared drives up etc and staff training.

We need an extra technician (in my eyes): Currently there are 3 of us who look after: • 525 machines • 225 laptops • 105 digital projectors • 18 servers • 2000 users • 38 network switches • 66 interactive boards • And various other devices which have plugs on…  There are proposed plans to add an additional 90 laptops to our current levels and a VLE before the next academic year. We are currently in the phase of putting together a bid for the governors giving a costing breakdown. I want to include in this the extra cost an ICT technician based around 37 hours a week. I am basing the extra member of staff on the fact that a VLE will push us all over the edge and we’ll have too much work to cope. Can anyone point me towards white papers or research material that outlines the additional staffing resources needed from a technical point of view that is needed to maintain a VLE? What are your thoughts and experiences based around the addition of a VLE within your school?

We sometimes get the same issue - even using main brand machines like Dell & HP. If we have a room where one doesnt work we just pull a HD from an imaged pc and swap it over - Job done. takes a couple of minutes - not worth getting hung up on.

Is there anyway using our existing wireless network and iPaq handhelds we could get PDA to PDA calling going over some sort of VoIP using Skype or something? This is only for internal communication and not for making external calls - anyone any ideas?

Machines have not been altered at all since we took delivery direct from NEC. Some machines did it right at the beginning but they were to infrequent and random to warrant any action. However now the 1 year threshold has elapsed they are falling like flies.

We have some NEC VL260 machines which are installed in classrooms. They randomly stop outputting a VGA signal to the monitor. The lights come on the machine, the hard disk light starts - all appears as though the machine is booting up. Nothing other than opening the case and flashing the BIOS resolves the issue! - imagine the scenario where we have to do between 2-10 a day!! (and all machines are in cages which adds to the frustration) ALL VL260's are running the latest BIOS and NEC have turned around and said they have come across this before but don’t know how to resolve it! Has anyone else come across this? If so is there a fix out there? Thanks in advance.

I third that - the Canon 400d is spot on - we use for presentations etc when SLT want photos taking. One thing to note - if you are using it from a distance the inbuilt flash isnt up to much so consider spending £150 on a decent add-on flash! A 28mm to 105mm lense should be fine.

Thanks for the replies - just suprising MS haven't acknowledged this and given the PDA's a user based system like on a workgroup installation of windows!

We currently have some HP iPaq 2940's which are running Mobile V5.0 which we are going to use for SIMS.NET mobile registration. Is there a way of locking down the PDA so that our staff cant fiddle? Ideally it would be nice if we could create a user with no rights and delete all the shortcuts... Is it at all possible? Thanks in advance.

I have Server 2003 R2 installed, just about to run out of disk space on one of the partitions which serves as the staff home drives. I installed a new hard disk and added it to the RAID 5 array. However I cannot add the free space to the partition - i only have the access to add it as a new physical disk. Can anyone suggest some disk partition manager software for Server 2003? Anyone used software and got any experiences?

The schools agreement is good if you plan to upgrade versions of software you are running frequently as you are covered to upgrade under software assurance. Or if you plan to add new machines within the year as you are entitled to grow your network upto 100% within the year without having to pay for addiditonal licences. However if you see no additional machines being added to the network within the year - just buy the licences there and then. It will work out cheaper over 2/3 years say. plus you dont have to remember next year about renewing the licence.

AP has been completely reset with testing various aspects. PDA is running Windows Mobile Version 5.0

Its a 100mb Telewest curcuit direct to our LEA. Which then goes into a 30mb link to t'internet which is shared between some 17 secondaries out our LEA.

To accompany our move to SIMS.NET and Lesson Monitor, SLT want PE to have PDA's for registering students in awkward places... We have purchased some Cisco 1240AG wireless access points and HP IPAQ 2490b PDA's to do the registrations with. I got hold of this kit after a recommendation form another NM that had it working. However i cannot get the PDA's to associate with the AP, I can get laptops to work fine no problems. I am trying it first of all with open authentication with a simple 120 bit WEP key to no avail. On the PDA it finds the SSID and trys to connect but doesn’t and just says 'Available' on the PDA. The PDA connects fine using a WPA key to one of our other Netgear AP's - ruling out a faulty PDA. Is there a setting on the AP of the PDA that anyone knows of to enable them to talk to each other?

Sorry - forgot to mention the fact that we dont want to run round each 'machine' and manage 'my computer' and change the letter assignment is 'disk management' for every staff member and students that complain about this. (We tell them to ditch their cd/rws and floppys for memory sticks then half of them can't use them :twisted: )
