Authenticated proxies and the iPad raise several challenges, the biggest being that many apps don't observe the iPad's system settings for proxies and try to connect straight out to the Internet. My guess would be that a netrestore set was created using System Image Utility on the server using the server's HD as the source and not a client Mac's HD

Quick answer Clear out any old iPad backups from iTunes from within iTunes preference. Setup your master iPad and then make a backup of it in iTunes. Turn off auto sync of devices in iTunes's preferences. Plug in in subsequent iPads and restore from backup made above

Try unplugging the iMac's power cable from the iMac and pressing the power button in for about 10 seconds. Then plug in the power and try pressing the power button to boot the Mac. This is an SMC (system management controller) reset and often fixes this issue.

Install WorkGroup Manager on any Mac with Logic installed (it can be handy to put this and other admin tools in the dock of any local admin accounts on the Macs for future administration/troubleshooting) and add this to the Open Directory preferences from there. Apply this to a user/computer group as required.
