OK, it seems that everything was held locally. So I've backed up C:\program files\SIMS and all its contents, and bundled the drive into a safe.

It's no RM yet, it's Salford authority, I already burnt our bridges with them as they wouldn't set up simple email forwarding for us (long story). I will try that backup method as soon as the secretary gets up for a brew!

Sorry, I assumed bgfl.org would be correct from the earlier post. I only know this because on our site we have to use command prompt, and our is ftp ftprelay.salford.gov.uk Not sure exactly what yours would be.

Have you tried opening a command prompt and typing: ftp ftprelay.bgfl.org?

The off-site backups will go, and we will no longer have access to them. This current system was implemented before my time, so it doesn't help that the secretary has been unable to run a local backup, as we're unable to run executables from a secure backup drive (external). I want to do some form of backup before RM's services comes in (and therefore unplugs us from the matrix!), just incase it all goes tits up. I've printed that pdf file from the linked thread, so I'll try and get an hour or two with the secretary's machine and see if I can make head or tail of it. As you can tell, I don't know the first thing about SIMS.

Yes that is our only SIMS machine. Off-site backups are being done, but again, when we get switched off these will disappear and I will take over the backing up of the system. What I'm most worried about right now is if we would lose all data when we get switched off. But you seem to have quelled that fear, so thanks!

Hi, I think I need some SIMS help. We have one machine in the office running SIMS, and I assumed that the database and all the information was held on the networked S: drive. However, I backed that up and then disabled the connection, and was still able to log in and access pupil data etc. So basically, I think my question is where does the SIMS data come from, can I find this out? And if it is coming from somewhere that will disappear when RM switch us off, how do I go about chianging its location to somewhere local?

I'm not fully convinced by the SID/sysprep argument. I had problems with WSUS, the desktop machines I had cloned didn't show up until I changed their SIDs, but I also had a set of 30 netbooks, again, cloned, that all showed themselves in the WSUS list first time, no problems.

BIOS is set to allow USB devices. Might have to leave it for a bit now, I've managed to completely bugger it somehow, and it needs reinstalling.

Plugging in 1-by-1 doesn't do anything, and there is only the mouse and keyboard plugged in at this stage, so they shouldn't be drawing too much power. As for the PSU, it is a 450W supply, powering just one IDE drive, CD-ROM, MB. Really stumped!

Hmm, waiting doesn't appear to do anything. Forgot to mention that booting into Safe Mode/ Last Know Good etc has the same outcome.

Ok, so I've got a spare machine, which has been wiped and Server 2003 has been installed. I've done a system state backup of the current server, and am trying to import it onto the new one (via external USB drive). All that goes fine. However, after the System State Restore on the new box is complete, and the server asks to be restarted, it starts, POSTs and then as soon as the 'Server 2003' splash screen appears, all the USB ports lose power, meaning that you can't log on. Before anyone says, the MB only has USB ports, no PS/2. Has anyone heard of this before? Is it a case of drivers from the other server being imported and corrupting something?

Do you have a link or proper name? Had a quick gander and can't see anything on the app store. Edit: Logitech one looks like it may do the trick.

Have you looked at Windows Powertoys? There is an image resize tool in there, but that will just resize the whole photo, probably not ideal if you have a large area you need to crop out. If you got to the point where each photo was fine but just too big, it would do the job. Have a gander: Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Ok, I have a member of staff who basically wants to be able to wander around the classroom, while still maintaining the use of his whiteboard. Presumably the best way to do this is a tablet? Alternatively, is there an ipod/phone app that could connect to his laptop and mimic the desktop? Or is my best bet a tablet? If so, how so?

Ha! I'm so stupid. Presumably when I was trying to get WSUS to do something, anything, I put various bits of the settings in other GPO's. Now that's all removed, the actual GPO for WSUS is working and the clients say they will update everyday at 12pm. We shall see after lunch if it's done anything!

Heard via my HT that several 'Phase 1' schools that joined the RM Managed service in September are having trouble too. One claims not to have had any emails or internet access for the past 3 months.
