and to answer tha value question : its not worth a lot. I have these in the school as well and i am about to pass a laptop safe full (16 units) to one of our feeder schools. Units on Ebay for around £40. Commercial value - zip Battery may be shot - thats £60 to replace. Nothing wrong with it per-say, and it depends on the school operation. In my site its has no use so i am passing it down as its past its lifecycle. You biggest issues is more likly to be the pouting about not getting the chance to bid for it or buy one themselves.

Marketing dude thought he could dictate to me the IT Manager & Lead Project Manager what he could do on his PC. So I set it to 1) Autostart Internet to the old hampsterdance site, & 2) Set the volume up to the highest possible. Now I not saying he was stupid - but he couldn't turn it down or change the defult site. Hampsterdance was of course very annoying after only a couple of mins - 30 was beging to annoy the whole room. I of course had my own office.........

I doubt you can afford vandel proof - so i would suggest cheap as possible for 'consumable' items and follow it up with some atual classroom control. It is truely amazing the results of charging the faculty for damage :-D

You would be asking for some many problems, and I was desiging the system I would code the HDD platter to the HDD BIOS so it wouldn't let you run the drive that way either.... But then I am nasty like that...........

We just nixed the ability to run executables from any drive the student has control over, then ran a regular puge of student home drives - a great many files they do not need. Couple that with RANGER lockdowns and we tend not have any isses.

the one I am on about is hard coded to the drive at BIOS POST - the OS hasn't even been referance at that point. However the code in not in the bios so a bios reset will not work - by design, it is to lock down confidential data. Moving the HDD moves the password.

We had a special film fitted by AWF (0121 693 2412) (http://www.appliedwindowfilms.co.uk) Resonable and very professional service/costs. The windows are designed to act as one-way in the day and to dramaticly reduce solar input. They should be able to assit you with details on film types.

Site taken by me in 2003, with 250 systems, 20 of which were laptops. SIMS not out problem, Bromcom not out problem, telephones not our problem. Single site with 850 users and 120 staff. No serious WiFi, projectors or IWBs, .5 Meg Internet pipe. Lite website maintained of site. Maintained with three staff. Time passes, site grows until in 2006, we have 550 systems, 200 of which are laptops, and we have taken on SIMS, dumped Bromcom and rolled out to SIMS for registration, taken on all communications, Split site with 1200 users and 200 staff. Full WiFi across site, DECT across site, 35 Projectors & IWBs, 10meg Inet pipe. Full VLE with onsite Website systems. Full onsite WO system for job tracking & Room booking system. Maintained by five staff. with a combined 33 years of proper IT knowledge, a proper Webmiester, a proper security manager, a proper deputy doing 3rd line support and a proper 1st line helpdesk specialist. LEA & NCC demand cuts - despite 20 years of professional experience in the 'real' world saying this was the right size team - my team is cut to three. I quote: 'But why have you cut 1st line support and projector booking?' Still at least both of the leavers got better jobs in schools nearby. I cannot tell you the pure contempt I have for the people that thought this was the right thing to do, and the fact that far more has been wasted that it would have cost to keep them. Nor can I suitably explain my irritation for the line that MK schools only use three. So what - doesn't mean it is working properly, and it doesn’t mean that they were comparable schools.

I am the IT Manager, I say what goes on the laptops - there is no discussion about it since I have to maintain it. I don't use Ranger solo because its a pain in the ass, however I do lock the laptops down and I do run automated purges of the data As I "I don't care you lost your MP3, Family photos, banking details, ripped off games etc - this a WORK tool not your personal playground. Now all I have to deal with is the thieving bastards that think that a laptop is theirs to keep when they go to teach at another school...........

RANGER has to 'see' the main manager program on the local network. for laptops you either have to allow the user to have the local admininstrator account password - no way in hell if you have the slighest common sence. Or you invest in the pile of poop that is RANGER SOLO.

They claim it will cool the room, but they haven't a clue what the BTU rateing is - and they haven't asked me for my estimated heat input. So they could not make a valid assumption in any event, on the other hand they haven't fitted the power to the racks - so maybe i am missing a subtle plan here. PFI, the modern way to be screwed over............

There are many comments that come to mind about that artical - sadly I can't bring myself to stop laughing long enough to type them, that I cause some offence to dumb-animals, sorry, teachers. I do love the way that they assume that teaching the subject or any other subject is in anyway going to give them the ability to run a site. It is almost sad the way in which they are truly enclosed in the ivory tower of learning. The other reality is that even in the 'real' world, IT pay is being squzeed hard by a great many of the 1990's & 00's wave of wannabe IT gurus. Too many, most not really upto it but being employed by thoses that know no better. Thoses that do really know it are leaving to other contires, quitting for a more relaxed lifstlye or dropping dead from two decades of stress and overwork.

Well it kills the old RIS server which ment Norton Ghost wouldn't work over the network. but I have installed it on all the other units and have no problems with SIMS. FMS, Exchange, Kalidos, RANGER

I would suspect the case is somebody mis-reading or overly interpreting the testing remit. A computer case is pysicaly attached to the metal frame - the ONLY way it can become dangerously live would be for the mains feed to somehow arc to the case - and in that event one would hope the main fuse would go. Since the case is metal a hole in the front would be irrelavent, if the case was entirly enclosed and was supposed to be double insulated that would be a differant case. BKGarry - hits it on the head with his post. We solved the problem by having special logo plates made - they have prevented a great deal of unsightly damage. This year we are going TC & AIO case anyway so the problem largly vanishes.

I needed to this last year, to be frank I put all the onus on the support company for SIMS - paid for them to come and do it, but I chose and built the basic server. Anything went wrong it was their problem to fix. Maybe not 'Iron-man' IT managment - but frankly with SIMS & FMS I could be doing without the hassle. I had two other units to build and needed the few days in easter for that. It didn't take them very long to do so I am not sure about the long and complicated bit.

We have a Police Office stationed at the school It is proving to be extremly valvuble in teaching and guiding both students & staff. I stress that she is not there as a 'big-stick' approch to problems, nor are we by any means a problem school. I know many schools have much more serious problems than we have, however annoying they are - but thats kinda the point - they are annoying not dangerous 'wear a stabvest' issues.
