Moving from 365 A1 Plsu to A3 - can't assign licenses
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Cloud Services
Hmm that sounds a bit scary, as we use Groups we'd have to go to the A1 Plus, remove the group, then go to A3 and add the group? I guess this shouldn't take too long but there is a period in the middle that a bit vague -
Moving from 365 A1 Plsu to A3 - can't assign licenses
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Cloud Services
Not sure how that would work if I removed A1 Plus before adding A3 Faculty? - would that not break their accounts in the meantime as they would have no licence? -
We're all on 365 A1 Plus for staff and students here, which is being removed/switched to A1 next year. As we also use the 365 desktop apps we're force to use A3 and have upgraded our agreement to include this so they will sign in Problem is, when I try to assign the A3 licenses to the Students group - its fails with the utterly useless error message: One or more errors occurred. Please review the results below. There was an error assigning licenses to Please try again. So I'm stuck at this point, is this because they are currently on A1 Plus, as I thought you could have dual A1 Plus/A3 until the A1 Plus expires?

Provide restricted access home use laptops
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in How do you do....it?
So the way I understand it (as I've only ever been in 100% Google or 100% MS schools) is that the federation works by signing in 365 accounts to a Google domain. So all we need is a free Fundamentals domain and some Chromebooks (and the device licenses which are about 40 quid each?) That's definitely my path of choice - even better if Smoothwall can be added to them as well! -
Provide restricted access home use laptops

That's an option I'd quite like, but we'd have to get 365 federation working as well. I've managed exclusively Google domains before but here is all 365 currently! -
Provide restricted access home use laptops
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in How do you do....it?
How does that work though, isn’t it just a chrome based plugin that can be removed? I’m trying to provide a laptop that is locked down (perhaps through intune is an option) but also has full categorised filtering I did look at the smoothwall agent but it didn’t seem to be much more than a chrome only thing? If you’ve any updated info I’d be interested in using our smoothwall -
This seems to crop up for me every so often, but this time it looks like I will actually have to get a solution working! We have a Windows network with Smoothwall and a vpn for staff to access at home (using domain joined laptops) - so laptops used at home work the same as in school Now we have to provide several laptops for students - which have to be locked down and also content filtered. Apart from using the vpn there isn't an easy way around this, and we don't want to use limited vpn licenses on students devices so I'm thinking a 3rd party filtering tool (like Cisco Umbrella, although I believe that's being EOL'l as well) Any recommendations? Its probably for less than 10 students in total

Its one of those where extra ram is no good, ours was 4 core/16gb and I upped it to 32gb and it made it worse if anything,so its back down to 16gb which is about 60% used Dare I drop it to 1/4 of the ram available instead of half
-
Its a bit random here as well - I click on the Logs page and it took 15 seconds to appear. Clicked on Options (10 seconds) and then back to logs and it was a lot quicker! As long as its not just me I'll put it on the 'annoyance list' and move on....

I've run papercut in several jobs, all similar size and specs to match, but this one seems to be getting progressively slower. I didn't set this server up but it looks all good to me so I can't see much apart from the series of updates to blame - - - Updated - - - That exactly it - works ok but from and admin point of view its a dog to navigate around
-
Anyone else notice their papercut running slower and slower after each update? Ours is a VM with 32gb and 4 cores and the cpu never drops below 55-60% for pc-app.exe, and the end result is the interface is so laggy as to be barely useable - if you click on the Logs page it simply won't load I've gone through the usual papercut articles about performance but we seem to have everything as expected Printing seems to work ok, although we're getting more and more complaints about the print client (account selection) dialogue not appearing I'm reluctant to jump to v24 until a holiday so I'm wondering if anyone else had worked around this?
-
I've just rescanned and they have both appeared - same as last month it took until nearer the end of the day/next day for all to appear. Odd!
-
We've noticed the last couple of months, after patch day our SCCM server isn't picking up all of the released monthly CU updates (i.e 2024-11 is the current one now) What's odd is when I synch the software updates, it finds the following: 2024-11 for Windows 10 21H2 2024-11 for Windows 11 22H2 2024-11 for Windows 11 24H2 But it doesn't find 2024-11 for Windows 11 23H2 or Windows 10 22H2 which is the vast majority of our computers! We have Windows 11 and 10 1903 onwards selected in our products, and its only been the last couple of months we've seen this so just wondering if its an MS delay and others are seeing this?

NetSupport DNA - weird pixelated preview
Sheridan replied to Sheridan's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Privacy mode is definitely not enabled, and its not the kind of privacy blur, more of a graphical corruption - this is the thumbnail view across 3/4 PCs: Odd thing is the view is fine when you first click on a room/container and then in a second or so it starts to corrupt the images! -

No we haven't set privacy mode, its just blocky/pixelated like an 80's loading screen! -
NetSupport DNA - weird pixelated preview
Sheridan posted a topic in Network and Classroom Management
We're running NetSupport DNA here and when we run the console directly from the server everything is good (we tend to use the Explorer in thumbnail mode) But when we run the console from a tech PC (high spec 64Gb ram, GTX 1050 graphics card) the thumbnails initially appear fine, but then all start to pixelate or show distorted - if you double click to open one then the view is fine. Its odd as the graphics on the server are just standard VMWare, but the tech PC is a good spec. I've checked the right ports are all open and the drivers are up to date, networking is 1gbps to the client and 10gbps backbone so no performance issues Bit odd and annoying as I have to access the server directly to run DNA! -
Has anyone found a way to add the Print option to the explorer menus in W11? Basically we'd like student to select several photos and then use Print. But this is cludgy as it only appears in the right click menu under 'Show more options' which basically brings up the old W10 menus! I'd prefer to leave context menus disabled, but I can't see why Print isn't available in the normal Explorer menus?
-
Not this time! Its an existing report and the logo in it is less than 300kb Just run the same report on a tech PC, and it worked, but the only difference is that it has 64gb ram (video editing etc) but surely 16gb is enough for this!

We have an issue when running Assessment > Individual reports where the job never completes (unless you only select < dozen or student students and you're lucky!) It either bombs out with a Word error: Faulting application name: WINWORD.EXE, version: 16.0.17928.20156, time stamp: 0x66ddfa1bFaulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.22621.4111, time stamp: 0x518e67bbException code: 0xc0000374Fault offset: 0x000000000010caa9Faulting process id: 0x0x24F8Faulting application start time: 0x0x1DB19617CCB3CE3Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\Office16\WINWORD.EXEFaulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Or if it manages to run for a bit longer then SIMS/Pulsar itself crashes instead: Faulting application name: Pulsar.exe, version: 7.218.21.0, time stamp: 0x6666a683Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.22621.4111, time stamp: 0xb2651143Exception code: 0xe0434352Fault offset: 0x0014a892Faulting process id: 0x0x372CFaulting application start time: 0x0x1DB1956C6B54213Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exeFaulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\KERNELBASE.dllReport Id: 97810e1c-48c0-42cc-b943-4bec59aa7e92 This is the latest build of SIMS, and Office 365 (August 2024 updates) running on 12 core/16gb machines so not a performance issue We've tried exporting as a single PDF (crashes faster) or Word (pulsar crashes) - so I'm not sure what the issue is.The server itself is barely ticking over at the time Anyone seen this type of issue before?

Its on my list to tidy up, as I inherited this set of policies and to be fair it was working ok in general. Until this obviously!
-
Hmm, I've just seen the printer in that room is off, I can't believe I missed that. I also can't believe GPP is so cruddy that it takes 10-15 minutes to timeout on a printer connection!? I'll power it back on and see what happens....(holds breath)
-
Happened again just now, hung logins. Machines are stuck at 'Welcome' but can be remotely browsed ok, just the log stops at: "Starting Group Policy Printers Extension Processing" I guess in 10-15 minutes they'll work. What a pain in the rear this is! I guess I'll have to find a way to disable this user GPO from applying to this room instead
-
Definitely the same policies as its a user policy applied to all staff and students - so for example in this room they would get 2 standard printers (global) and then the one in that room - the policy doesn't cause this delay anywhere else I haven't tried moving a PC yet, purely because I rolled out 100's of the with the same image and only this location has the issue, and only occasionally! For example its being used now and 20+ kids are logged in with no issues! But yesterday about 7 or 8 got stuck with this long login and the log event showing 10 mins or so for the Printers GPP to apply. Bizarre From what I can see, this only happens if its a users first login on that PC, but it doesn't happen across the school
-
We rolled out a lot of new hardware over the summer, all identical with a stock Windows 11 image. (albeit SCCM adds various packages depending on location) The issue we've noticed in one particular area that randomly some of the PCs take ages to login - and its always the GPP printers policy and we see log events like: "Completed Group Policy Printers Extension Processing in 657516 milliseconds." Now, that means its taking over 10 minutes to apply printers policy. All the other policies apply in a few seconds, I'd say a brand new login normally takes 1-2mins tops, and less than 20 seconds if the local profile already exists. This is a user GPP that uses item level targeting to assign printers to the user based on the PC location - this policy is applied to all staff and students and doesn't cause this issues anywhere else I'm starting to pull my hair out over this now, as I can't see a reason for this - it only happens in this room, and not all the time! This room is on the same network segment/switch as a another room with identical hardware which never has this issue! Each PC has 1gbs connection and is brand new. It is only the print assignment that seems to have an issue, but if there was an issue with the server I would have thought this would impact everyone across the school. From the users perspective they just see the usual 'Preparing Windows' message, sometimes CTRL+ALT-DEL will bring up the security menu and cancelling that brings up the desktop. I'd be grateful for any ideas, as I'm not seeing any reason why this would happen in such a specific area - but not all the time as I've seen a full class of 30 logged in fine in 5 mins!
