  1. Hi guys, Please forgive me if this has been asked before but I have had a search and cannot find anything, or if I'm being dumb, which I often am! We recently networked our macs and manage them using profile manager. I am now just starting to look into Apple VPP and most of if makes sense but am left confused about the licensing model they use for app deployment. What troubles me is that both options on the edu store refer to licenses per user rather than per machine. Is this really the case that you need to buy a license for a bit of software for every student who is likely to use it?? This seems crazy to me as, for example we will have perhaps a hundred music students who will all need to use Logic on 50 macs timetabled over the week. If I'm reading the blurb right we will need to buy 100 licenses rather than just the one per machine (50). Am I understanding this correctly or getting the wrong end of the stick? If so is it purely apple being greedy megalomaniacs or is there some benefit for us end users that I have not spotted? I'm pretty sure this is just the first of many and numerous hurdles that I'll need to overcome but if can at least make a start....! Thanks in advance all
  2. We've been using Freemake Video Converter for a year or so after seeing it recomended on these very forums. Been perfect for us. Free Video Converter| MP4 FLV 3GP AVI MKV DVD| FREE Download
  3. I've spent soooo long looking into this and finally found a way of importing MPEGs into Movie Maker (WinXP version) last summer. This was tested on XP machines running the KLite Codec Pack. • Download and install AC3Filter from AC3Filter • Download and install MPEG-1/2 DirectShow Decoder Filter from GPL MPEG-1/2 DirectShow Decoder Filter - Browse /GPL MPEG-1_2 Decoder at SourceForge.net • Run Movie Maker. • Attempt to drag an MPEG into the work pane. This will fail with and error. • Click Tools/Options/Compatibilty • Ensure that ONLY DirectVobSub is ticked. • Drag the MPEG into the work pane again. This should now work. • Click Tools/Options/Compatibilty - Ensure that only AC3Filter and GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder are ticked. • You should now be able to use raw MPEG files in Windows Movie Maker. This method does allow users to import MPEGS into WMM. The only downside that I've encountered is that the options have to be set PER USER so this can be a bit of a faff. Anyway, good luck!
  4. I used CCC to image our Macs and had no problems using this with the firewire target mode. Have a look here to check you are doing it right How-To: Image OS X and Boot Camp to a New Mac: Apple News, Tips and Reviews « (ignore the boot camp bit unless you want them dual boot)
  5. Hi all, it seems that for some reason gpupdate is deleting any power users. I thought that I was going mad as I was making users power users on thier pc only to find a few days later that they weren't. I've tested it with gpupdate /force and it does it every time. Oddly, any other type of user/group remains - it only deletes the power users. Does anyone have any ideas?
  6. Many thanks for the quick replies both. Interesting thoughts about the transfer belt. Reading up about what it actually does(!) does certainly point a finger at that. The life on the belt though is still very high - showing at 83% on the web interface. Of course it could just be a knackered belt.. Re toners, we always use new Oki toners rather than refurbs for all colour printers.
  7. Hi all, this is a bit of a last resort really but was hoping that someone might have an idea, because I'm all out! Basically we have an old Oki C7300 mk2 that has started to print with a seemingly faded patch down the left hand side of prints. The area is aprox 1.5" and runs down the whole of the page. It looks to me as though it is not laying down a particular colour completely but cannot work out which one. I have shaken all the toners and they are all fairly new. All of the drums are also well within service life too. I have cleaned the led sensors and cleaned the belt. I have checked the fuser is not to blame by interupting a print before it reached that part. I do have a spare image drum and toner for each colour but am reluctent to try those as I cannot imagine they would really like to be opened and then left on a shelf for several months..? Here are a couple of pics which hopefully illustrate the problem. Full page; please ignore the blotchy scan - everything past the first inch or so on the left is fine. http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5965/scan1medium.jpg Crop; The cyan section shows the problem most clearly, please note the heavy noise/pixelated gradient. It is difficult to see from these scans but the problem does show on the other colours on the printer too. http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/6078/scancrop.jpg Any ideas?! Cheers.
  8. I've used Jessops for a good few years with an educational account. It is definately worth getting one setup with them as more often than not the quotes are very different to those displayed on thier website. Also they seem to be able to get hold of a lot of kit not listed so its alway worth an email.
  9. Thanks guys, I'll take a look at both options
  10. Hi all, hoping for some input if possible. I need to spec up a new colour laser printer for our marketing department. They currently use an old OKI C7300 LED A4 printer. Quality wise it is fantastic - and knocks the socks off the Kyocera FS-C5030s we have in the staffrooms. Because it will be used to produce short run marketing fliers/posters and also proofs prior to being sent to external printers, print quality is really the main priority here. Idealy we would like to get one on contract and pay a monthly copy charge and have the service call out cover. If anyone has any input or pointer then that would be great. Cheers.
  11. Hi all, sorry to top an old post, but I'm still no further along with this issue and hope one or two people will see this who missed it before. To simplify the problem, the Peason Veu Promissor testing software seems to be incompatible with all text to speech accessibility software. Does anyone here actually use Prommisor? Does anyone here actually use accessibility software? Does anyone here use them both together?? Thanks guys.
  12. Hi all, we purchased a site licence for Read And Write 9 text to speech software over the summer primerily to use instead of human readers. Obviously we tested the demo software and worked a treat with everything including Prommisor online testing software. A week before going live we seem to have run into a problem. What happens is that when Prommisor (version 8.97.210.9) is loaded R&W loses focus and will no longer read. When Prommisor is closed R&W continues merrily along. Promissor starts in full screen and does not allow for alt-tabbing so cannot check much when it is running. Having tested it so long ago I cant remember for sure that I didn't set any wierd option to make it work with Prommisor, but I'm 95% sure that I did not. My main thought is that it could be something to do with a Prommisor update nobbled this but can't test with an older version of Prommisor as it bombs out before the login screen. I've not spoken to the R&W or Promissor people yet as I can see large amounts of buck passing when I do, so am interested to see if anyone else who uses these products has experienced similar issues. Sorry for my rambling thread by the way, I'm good at rambing. Cheers all.
