I agree, it's good for cherry picking. Got my girlfriend a Linksys Cable router for about £35 last year, after seeing it advertised on TV. However, I made the mistake of not printing the offer out, as when we got there, the Oik behind the counter hadn't heard of the offer and tried to charge us double. He wouldn't shift, so we had to go back home and print out the offer. He still seemed urked by it.

I think you might presume wrong :-) Sophos have a tool called Lancet which makes it very easy to remove anti-virus programs. Basically, it has an XML list of virus scanners and details of how to remove them. It nicely removed McAfee for us and I've also briefly tried it with Symantec and it seemed to work! One of the reasons we were prepared to go with Sophos was that they promised that they could help us to remove existing virus scanners. That's not a lot of help when you're leaving them but you ought to be able to say to the new company that you want a facility to remove their "opposition" :-) I can't find any reference to Lancet on the Sophos website srochford. Is is still available, or is it not for general release?

The authority I work for use the Redstor/Attix5 remote backup solution and I thoroughly recommend it. No more cyclic redundancy errors on backup tapes to deal with.

Sorry, I should have said, I'm having to do a full removal because I'm having problems with it and will have to then re-install it. By running the uninstalls from add/remove programs, you should be able to remove it as normal. However, this will leave registry entries. To my knowledge, you will have to run the uninstall on every workstation too though, which could be a rather time consuming task. As mentioend, if anyone knows of a script that can do this, we'd be much obliged.

How about simply informing staff that under no circumstances can they install ANY software. If they need anything installing they must come via yourself. If they fail to understand that, they shouldn't be teaching our children.

Why not simply schedule Defrag to run every saturday afternoon? Free and simple. I shut all my (personal) computers down with a batch file each night that runs defrag first. Takes a while the first time it is run, but because it is run so frequently, it doesn't take long and my computers run a lot faster and more reliably. Granted, you can;t do this with a server as it;s rarely switched off, but you could certainly do it at least once a week.

Redstor and Attix5 are excellent remote storage solutions. We offer this solution to primaries on their admin networks, where they aren't likely to need more than 5GB backing up. It's incremental and only takes about 5-10mins to transfer the data each night, over 2MB links. At the moment this isn't suitable for secondaries due to the costing of roughly £100/GB, but I've heard Capita are trying to offer the same technology, but at a far cheaper price, so that might be worth looking into, if you work at a secondary school. Bye bye BackupExec! You won't be missed.
