Ahh now thats working a treat! I had a few problems when setting the mDB... values, but checking ADSIEdit shows that these values must be integers (I was using Long) - and now it all seems to work! Brilliant stuff, thanks for everyones help on this. By the way, does the mailbox not get created until the users first login? (thats my understanding anyway)

I hope that a change of government has an impact on BSF - it might mean the funds are more carefully distributed. I.e the school gets more benefit rather than a load of consultants creaming off large salaries to provide a half baked building and infrastructure project.

I think that code just sets their mailbox location - it creates the user and set their Exchange details but doesn't actually create the mailbox itself. I use similar code to the above to create the user account and set their details, but use references to the CDOEMX.IMailboxStore object to actually create mailboxs and set the storage limits. This simply won't work in Server 2008 and MS seem to offer no alternative. EDIT: Actually I'm wrong that has worked (blame my poor typing!) - nice one! All I need to do now is find a way to set the mailbox sizes

Nice idea though! Shame MS haven't provided the 2003 Exchange Management Tools for Server 2008. If I could register the cdoexm.dll on Server 2008 I would be OK as this would give me the references required. I'm amazed there doesn't seem to be a proper,.NET, MS approved way of creating mailboxes!

Isn't the powershell just for Exchange 2007 onwards? I'm still running Exchange 2003

Does anyone know of a way to use VB.net (Express 2008) to create an Exchange mailbox? I used to use the old CDO (cdo.dll,cdoexm.dll) methods but these don't seem to work on Server 2008. Searching around the web always seems to come back to the CDO object, but surely there is another method available in .net that doesn't rely on dlls from 2001! Another issue is that I can't install the Exchange 2003 Management tools onto 2008 Server which causes further problems.

Sorry I wrote that wrong! I could register it,but it bombs out the program as soon as you try to create an object. I've had to go backwards and simply use Shell commands to use cacls , which works. Seems a shame to go back to DOS commands but ADsSecurity is from 2001 and theres no update!

Cheers for that - its a shame I can't register the ADsSecurity.dll on the Server 2008 box as that would save me a lot of time. This lets me set NTFS permissions quite easily Not sure why I can't register it - it works ok on Server 2003 and various other Windows variants.

I've got an old application (VB6) that creates user shares and sets NTFS permissions that has worked since Windows 2000. Now Server 2008/64bit has come along, and it won't work at all so it looks like a re-write. I'm using Visual Basic Express 2008 and so far can't see to find a simple way to do the following: - Create a folder on a local drive - Share the above folder (and set the share permissions) - Set the permissions for a folder within that share and set them to replicate downwards Has anyone got a code snippet or example they can show me? I'm going around circles here trying to find a way around this!

You might be right about Asus, ironically the early 900 model seems to work with AES fine, yet the newer 1008HA model is one failing

The ZoneDirector contoller is up to date and the clients are brand new EEEPCs with XP Sp3 on them. The wireless driver on the netbooks is the latest (2009) and they work fine on the TKIP side.

We've got a Ruckus wireless setup here (running a single SSID with WPA/TKIP) which works well. However I've set up a second SSID with WPA/AES (so we can use the N channel speed) and this sort of works. Even though it is only the AES that differs from the main SSID we get random disconnection, failure to get an IP address, or the 'Limited or no connectivity' message in XP. Repairing the connection always seems to work, but this is no use as a solution. Anyone got any ideas why changing to AES encryption would causes this? It must be the AES because when we move the netbooks back to the other SSID they work very reliably again.

Yes its the latest 3.5 that includes earlier versions. I haven't tried using WSUS as this tends be more less predictable as to when the installs occur (as opposed to a GP which will install on next reboot) I guess theres always a manual install - its a big package and can cause problems if it goes wrong!

Alas I have to deploy dot net 3.5 to make an application work. Well it actually requires 2.0 but I may as well do the latest version. Question is, has anyone done this via group policy? I don't fancy using WSUS as this is a massive install so I would like to push it out via AD on a room by room basis. Microsoft don't really give you a solution, just basically a command line to run the .exe installer.

We're getting a refurb here (some buildings knocked down, some upgraded and some joining of existing buildings) and I've been told that the managed service is part of this. Even a local PFI school is expected to subscribe to the MSP in the end.

Although I'm wary of BSF, I'm still genuinely interested in what sort of problems caused them to rollback. I guessed it hasn't got to the point of a complete changeover and they encountered an issue that couldn't be solved quickly enough to avoid disruption. Information about what problem they had would helpful for the rest of us facing BSF style chaneover in the coming years.

Don't a lot of the newer VDI devices have the extra graphics processing/caching etc to perform video editing or similar tasks? I guess most schools would be looking at a combination of thick and thin clients initially.

I think a lot of us will end up supporting XenApp type of systems after BSF (assuming we aren't all working for Tesco by then as shelf stackers!) I think the idea of virtualising the desktops is great and and exciting step forward, but it still requires a lot of kit to support thousands of users across a county-wide wan.

Must have been a fairly substantial problem to go for a rollback - thats not a move you take lightly.

I've just read a large secondary school in Durham (Durham Johnson) school has rolled back its BSF ICT to its old systems due to the issues they had. I assume this is temporary but has anyone got any more info on what the problems where they had? Seems like they were using Citrix XenApps and VDI thin client technologies.

I'm just trying to read it with Paragon rescue now - it seems to be able to read the drive and users folder so fingers crossed it will be able to recover something! Chkdsk run from anything come back with the 'master file table corrupt' error and then aborts.

Its out of warranty unfortunately. I can replace the drive no problem they're cheap enough anway. I would just like to recover the data (well, the owners data that they haven't backed up of course!) before scrapping it!
