I'm running a Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 (with latest service pack and Web Interface 5.2) and License server 11.6.1 - all working fine. However I have an issue when you log out of the server (from the server itself,not RDP) and wait a few minutes the Citrix Licensing service crashes,and logs the event 7034 'The Citrix Licensing service has terminated unexpectedly' Login and restart the service and it will work for as long as you remain logged in - logout and it crashes again. I can't find any other errors either. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the licensing-but its still the same. Any ideas what might cause this? It didn't happen before I upgraded the license server but I upgraded that when I installed the service pack and latest Web Interface

Bit of an update. Still haven't found a fix for these but I have noticed the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters is empty on failing machines, but is fully populated on working machines. Does that mean its failing because the key is missing, or is the key missing because its failing to register with the DNS server?

Forward and reverse lookups seem to be fine - resolving by IP or hostname works as expected.

Same here, 2010 model 10.6.5 clients and 10.6.5 server - all bought at the same time. DNS is on our 2003/2008 Servers and works fine across everything else using AD (Windows and Linux PCs). The DNS servers are dished out by DHCP and the Macs are all getting IP addresses and DNS settings ok - resolution of addresses also is working ok. I suspected Sophos as a culprit, but disabling that made no difference. I also wasn't sure whether I had the magic triangle set correctly. In the directory utility I set the client's search order to OD and then AD - any other way means the Mac clients don't pick up computer preferences. Seems to work fine though, AD clients can login and get their OD preferences and the Macs are getting their machine preferences. Problem is when the damn beach ball appears, I can't start the process manager or a terminal window to see if anything is hogging the CPU! It also seems to be highly random. It happens 30 seconds after login, or 5 minutes. It can be when using Finder, or any application or utility. Once its hung it may come back after 5 minutes or so, or sometimes is completely frozen! Whats most frustrating is these are fairly fresh machines, not much on them and haven't been 'tinkered' with much at all! Apart from basic Office/Sophos/Photoshop installs they're as they came.

We've got a room of 10 macs, connect to AD and an XServe. They authenticate to the XServe for machine policy and use policy and the AD server for user authentication. All works fine, users login, get their policy etc and so on. However, the damn things 'hang' worse than Windows 95 machines! Everything I do results in the stupid spinning wheel - and after several minutes waiting I just pull the plug and reboot. Could be anything, viewing a document, printing an image, surfing the web - just randomly hangs. I can't believe this is normal behaviour - they're practically unusable in this state. I've also noticed it takes a long time for the users 'Home' and 'My Applications' icons in the dock to actually do anything. It takes several minutes after the desktop has appeared for them to be 'active' (i.e they open up when clicked) Any ideas as to where I'm going wrong with this? They're on our network and the authentication side seems to work ok? (apart from it usually takes 2-3 attempts to logon as a network user if the mac has gone to sleep) Very frustrating!

Yes to all of the above. Every other pc is the place is working OK as well!

Bit of an odd problem here. Got about 30 PCs all identical, from the same image. However about 4 of them do not appear to be registering themselves in DNS. They work fine apart from that , getting policies, logins working etc and they can resolve all other hosts on the network apart from themselves. Checking the DNS servers shows no entries for them. Running ipconfig/registerdns has no effect and also registers no error in the event viewer. I've tried reimaging, recreating their AD account and nothing seems to work. No errors are appearing at the client or the DNS servers either. Anyone else seen anything like this?

Its the Business Open Space version - a trial for potentially our entire network. Its also failing to connect for updates through a proxy server whether I set a username or not. Its a shame its not working, the deployment side and Admin console absolutely whups Sophos versions. EDIT: looks like its the end of this trial - even when I add my admin PC into the trusted zones of the client, it allows nothing through. Manually specifiying the VNC apps still blocks it, manually specifiying the ICMP and RDP ports still blocks them as well! It even appears to prevent the clients from registering their IP in DNS as they have all stopped doing that since KAV was installed. Over to NOD32....

Anyone using Kasperky Administration kit 2010? I'm trialling it here to replace the ever-troublesome Sophos, and so far like it a lot. However I'm stuck on a fairly basic problem. On the test clients I can no longer ping them, remote desktop them, VNC to them, manage them or access their local drive (i.e \\pc\c$) which is essential for daily admin stuff. I'm guessing KAV has blocked everything but when I set the Anti hacker rules to allow RDP port 3389 it makes no difference. Disabling the Anti hacker part makes no difference either. I haven't got a lot of time for this trial so if anyones got past these problems I would be interested to hear how!

Thanks for that - I eventually got it working (by fluke I think!) but now the update manager won't work. It simply refuses to connect to the proxy server (even though the settings are the same as on the old server)

Yeah I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and start looking at replacing switches as well!

Cheers for the ideas - Its Forefront I'd be using and I was wanting to limit it to specific user groups (ie Sixth Form initially). What I was trying to avoid is DHCP filling up with all sorts of devices, therefore authentication at the wireless side would limit that to those who are going to use it. If authentication is only at the proxy side, the vlan's dhcp will be full of entries for everyones phone/ipad/coffee machine! I was trying to avoid vlans due to the mixture of kit we have - everything is split into subnets at the core switch but I've avoided vlans as the various switches around the place have varying capabilities.

Has anyone out here successfully got their Ruckus system set up to allow student access from their own devices (laptops,iphones etc) so they authenticate using their own AD credentials? Currently we have WPA2/TKIP authentication using RADIUS for domain PCs and laptops and this is working fine. But I want to allow student the ability to use the internet from their own devices, but authenticating as themselves and only having access to the web proxy. I've tried a few ways and it doesn't seem to work as expected. I've also tried setting up guest access (with a pass) and this works, but theres no way of setting the web proxy address (apart from telling the user to configure it manually)

On our 10.6 Macs we have the Home folder set to the users AD account share (on a Windows server) and put this shortcut in the Dock, along with the My Applications link. The user logs in OK, and the two icons above appear in the dock, but they are effectively inactive for a good long time after the user has logged in. Eventually the icons change and they are then usable. Any ideas what causes this delay? These options are set using preferences from the Xserve, and seem to work fine - except for the long delay.

I've tried Firefox and Safari, haven't tried Chrome yet.

I'm struggling to get our OSx 10.6 machines to play content from Iplayer and Youtube. They just don't play the video. All content is via a proxy which works with all windows machines. I've tried updating to the latest version of Flash, Shockwave and Air, but that hasn't worked. Anything else I can try? The proxy isn't blocking anything, and the Macs themselves are playing flash content on other websites?

Thanks, I've been testing the URL filter and seems to work well apart from the annonymizers category which has let through a few of the typical 'Glype' ones (such as carrotcrunch etc) - whether thats because I'm running an evalation URL filter or not I'm not sure.

Done a bit of checking here. And when one fails it still has its wireless settings (from a GPO), its connecting to the Radius server (when i log in locally I see the radius log show errors as the local user accounts cannot be validated). But it simply sits and refuses to connect or get and IP address to allow a network login. The only thing that seems to resolve the problem is to plug a lan cable in, run a gpupdate. Reboot and login again via the lan and make sure the wlan connects. From then on it will work until it randomly fails again! It is pretty random as well. Different netbooks, different locations and following no pattern!

Can you tell me where you bought the license? And how much it cost (if you don't mind!)

We've tried this in the past, and it doesn't seem to have made much difference

Most of them are Atheros although I think some others are earlier Broadcom ones

We've got a load of netbooks running XP Pro SP3, connecting to a Ruckus wireless network and using WPA2/AES authenticating to a Radius server. These seem to work well, but every so often a good percentage of them will simply fail to connect (i.e not available), even though they are in a very strong signal area. The only way to get them to reconnect to the wireless is to actually connect them to the LAN and then refresh the wireless connection. Reboot and then they work OK. This has happened on several different types of netbook so I guess the problem lies with the wireless, the RADIUS server or possibly even Windows itself. Anyone else had these sort of problems? When these are working its great, 20 in one room all working away with decent response times and stable connection. I've updated/downgraded the wireless card drivers but it makes no difference.

You know, its always the same - you realise the mistake you've made as soon as you post! Once I checked out DNS servers I realised the www entry was missing. D'Oh! Thanks for the brain-prompt though!

I'm sure I must be missing something here: Our internal domain uses DNS, and these DNS servers use the LEA's DNS servers as Forwarders. All works well. Problem is our website is hosted externally and the LEA used one of their external IP addresses to host it. Our DNS servers always fail to find the http://www.domain.com, but if we query the LEA's DNS servers directly it works fine. Is there a way to create a DNS entry for our external http://www.domain.com address? As its the same name as our domain (i.e domain.com) these seems to confuse DNS which doesn't query the forwarders.

Do you find the category filter to be quite accurate then? A lot of them seem to seem to allow a few proxy sites through - including smoothwall. I've wasted plenty of time trying to speak to smoothwall thank you
