  1. Got my Serial, Got my spywear free software. Got my e-mail address added to spamlist???? who knows? :\ well i can just change it... Cheers for the link!
  2. My school goveners cannot agree that we will have £4000 to give to microsoft every year. we normally give them about £800 ?? some years we give them £0 This year we have to give them about £8000 (thanks for that information about the 1 processor license techmonkey) but that will do us for another 6 years till either: a. office 2007 needs replacing because sims says so. or b. sims needs a new version of SQL. either way the sum total never comes near £4000 each year if you spread it out. and we have 250 machines. we only have 3 windows 2003 servers, and were working towards having less . Can i ask why you need 5 windows 2003 servers?
  3. Sig = gone
  4. Debian all the way server wise .... Were starting to use kubuntu on some desktops. and of course we use knoppix for the staff laptops, when they go bad...
  5. As our school could never guarentee the available funds for a school agreement, we have to buy everything per machine. also can you define what you mean by "lots of clients" would 30-40 teachers usings sims be classed as lots of clients, my guess is we will have at most 30 on at the busyest times, normally about 10, if that. However they were looking into electronic registration and such like, guess they will have to abandon that idea. Also were waiting to find out whats happening because it looks like our county is to become centralised... and all the machines / software bought from a central local etc.
  6. Weve just recieved an e-mail saying that sims will no longer run on the free SQL server. and we have to upgrade to SQL server 2005. This means we have to pay £150 for a server license then £15.50 for each CAL. Not only that, but it seems it wont run without office 2003 anymore. That means we now have to pay for office 2007 licenses, as nowhere sells office 2003. these are about £35 each. In short, its going to cost us about £10000... To use software, WERE ALREADY USEING!!??! Were in the process of explaining why we need £10000 for no actual upgrade at all. What are the other schools doing about this??? Im thinking capita have an agreement with MS where they get a 20% cut or something, because openoffice will handel all the XML that SIMS needs! *is sad*
  7. Backup exec system recovery 7 does... It does alot of things its fantastic infact, you can mount volume sets as a drive, and then share it out to your network if you wanted too (read only of course) , backup without stopping any services, + recover to OTHER hardware ie. RAID 5 scsi windows 2003 > IDE or SATA desktop with one big disk. and completely diff hardware
  8. Heres a good one, Did you set the ip addresses on the correct subnet / class of network. Annnd did you disable the DHCP option which many of these horrible things have. also. when you say the laptops have connected okay. Do they have an IP address, and is it a real one from your dhcp server or is it one they have recived from windows Automated Ip Addressing
  9. Veritas is more expensive... EMC looks more expensive!?? (800-900$) I think im prollys best off sticking with livestate and grugingly paying a stupid amount more for the same product i bought a year ago... Maybe i should order 5 while im here :\ .......
  10. Hi we currently use livestate to back up all our schools student and staff work, aswell as sims... Now as symantec livestate reads the drive at a sector level (i.e. the 1's and 0's) we can backup everything, including the SQL database, while its in use. We bought a copy in october 2006 for £260 we now have another two servers we want to buy but the best price i can get is £400. because "symantec have put the prices up,, again" Does anyone know of any other GOOD backup software which will do the same job as livestate????? As its abit pricey and i dont want to go back to writing scripts with XCOPY Thanks -Tony
  11. Id just cheat... and make a new DNS entry in your namespace... Tell your dns server that rmays.hants.sch.uk = *internal ip* That way your squid will lookup the IP, and then ask your internal IP for the files... we have a system like that here int.greenfieldschool.net to the world = our external IP addy int.greenfieldschool.net inside greenfield = 10.0.0.5 ... That would be my advice. But maybe im not understanding the question....
