Having just rolled out interactive screens in all of our classrooms and issued staff with 2 in 1 devices, it's a royal pain! Joe

Hey Nick, We are having the exact problem you experienced. We also use Konica Bizhubs for some areas of the school. Have you found a fix at all? I'm considering using Post script drivers but I don't hold out much hope that it'll work. Thanks joe

Hi, My AV Dept are replacing all the projectors during Easter on one level of the school and I have said that they must be able to plug into the network for management. I was hoping their contractor would recommend a good make as the usability of the software is key. I'd like to know your opinions are on the different makes such as NEC and Sanyo. Is the software much the same? Or any particular cons to look out for? It's key that they can monitor them and allow alerts to be sent to generated for cleaning of filters/ replacement of bulbs. Also power management is key. Many thanks

Matt- thanks, it has made me think that what I want to do with MDT/Deployment Workbench is not possible at least not without some third party modifications. I'm considering just going back to use WDS as it will do what I've asked (very similar to RIS). I'd like to here from other members on what configuration they use, specifically with naming when use MDT/WorkBench/Lite Touch Thanks

Well, if the machine is not known to the domain a generic name such as MININT.... is fine as I can choose to rename it either there and then or in windows. What I would like is for the computer name to be set to whatever it is known as in AD. To do this though a query would need to run against the AD- perhaps looking at the objectGUID (netbootGUID was what RIS used to use if I have this right). I'm basically used to how RIS did things and want to try and replicate this as. Unless I am missing something really obvious- which is always possible. Thanks

Tarqel, Thanks for the pointers but I really can't find much about computer naming anywhere. I have found a another forum with a way around this using a webservice: RIS-style naming with MDT 2010: Use a web service - Michael Niehaus' Windows and Office deployment ramblings - Site Home - TechNet Blogs When I boot into litetouch, all I want is for the pc which is most cases would be pre existing to have it's correct computer name pulled in from AD. At the moment even though a computer account already exists I get MININT-HFKW822. Thanks

Hi- I forgot to say that we don't use SCCM. We could name each pc as we go around- but would take the technician significantly longer aswell as having to move the computer into the correct OU and creating multiple computer accounts unless I have got that wrong.

Hi all, I'm starting to plan the migration to windows 7 and have setup WDS, MDT2010 on 2008R2. It is obviously different from RIS which is what we currently use for XP. My question is- how does everyone deal with the join to domain using an existing computer account, as well as adding a new pc to the network? I know you can populate the DB with some key computer details (MAC, computer name) but is this the only way? We only add pc's once a year to the school but might re image them as much as three times during the year- so the process must be as quick and easy as possible. In RIS all we do is hit F12, login and select the image with a quick hit of enter to start the process, while noting the existing computer account was being used therefore in the correct OU. I have read alot of guides but I just can't understand how to proceed! Any advice or pointers would be very much appreciated. Joe

Hi everyone, Been using bginfo very happily for the last two years on 2003/xp- it's been such a time saver particually for staff/students reporting problems. I'm testing bginfo on Windows 7 but so far I can only get it to work for users but not for the computer logon screen. Has anyone found a way around this?? I'm assuming it's because of permissions. I'm using a vbs with the following command; Set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") objShell.Run "\\dc1\Utility\BgInfo\BGinfo.exe \\dc1\Utility\BgInfo\test1.bgi /accepteula /timer:0", 1, True Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. gshaw, thanks for your reply! We used to use a batch script to connect to the local printers but ended up tatooing the printers onto the machines. What you mind posting a copy of your vb script? Sounds like it might work quite well for us.

Hi, Sorry to drag up an old thread but I'm determined to find a solution! We used to use policy maker for our printing needs but not that M$ own it there hasn't been updates for a good couple of years. And the final straw has come when some recent security updates have killed it! I have setup print management in R2 which works quite well but the age old problem of setting the default printer remains but was something policy maker delt with. We have Adobe Pro installed on most machines in the school which installed the printer driver as "Adobe PDF" that is the default on all machines its installed on. I have tried running the script as shown in this thread and used Thom's points but still can't get the default to be one of the network printers I'm assigning. (per machine) I have an OU for each computer room/ staff room and within there a GPO containing the deployed printers. As I understand it any settings put into the user configuration inside the GPO which is assigned to machines, will not apply to users logging into that room of computers as the users are in their own OU. I understand why the script's are not setting the default printer as the printers don't appear until after 30secs or so as ricki has stated. I have renamed the shared printer to aaLibraryBlack. Also have considered renaming the Adobe PDF printer to xAdobe PDF printer but would cause issues if I choose to role back the software. We have 2003 R2 domain controllers. Any advice would be much appreciated, how do others deal with printing in schools? Joe
