Hi Have you tried Schoolquote? (or what used to be known as schoolquote anyway). Just put your details on, and companies send you quotes through. It's great for getting the necessary 3 quotes that finance departments require.

Hi, In my old school we used to use something called "Call Parent" which had a call, email and text function and integrated into Sims. Used to work realy well, unfortunately I can't find a URL to it. I'm sure as well it was a partner with Sims as well, so sims were reccomending it to schools at one time (but I could be wrong on this). Well worth a look, as it was really easy to use and was very reliable. For the other things you're after, Lesson Monitor and Learning Gateway are the obvious options to me, but I would say that having always worked in capita schools.

found the setting! Someone has managed to set the printer to print over 18000 copies per job! Safe to say that it has now been reduced to 1. Hope this gets rid of the problem!

Hi Everyone, Our Art department uses the above named printer (HP Color LaserJet 3700n). However recently it has started to display some really odd behaviour. When, for example, I send a test page through to print, the printer will produce 20 copies (approximately). Similarly when a student or a member of staff attempts to print, the printer will randomly generate multiple copies of the original document. Has anyone come across this before? (And before anyone says anything, it's not just kids printing multiple copies!! :-) ). Any help gratefully received. Cheers

Hi all, Interesting issue that's cropped up today. Students and staff, when trying to save a Publisher document, get an error message telling them that they don't have access to the area to which they are trying to save. Folowing further investigation, it appears that publisher is trying to save to a different default save location than the other office suite applications. so for example, rather than saving to "My Documents" (which is mapped to the users shared network space), Publisher attempts to use a network drive through "My Network Places" which our users don't have access to and causes it to fail. Any help will be very gratefully received. Cheers

Hi Everyone, It's been a while since I posted on here, mainly as I left the educational IT world and joined the real world. I've now made the decision to try and get back into the education world, believe it or not I actually miss it, and I have got my first interview lined up for next week. Unfortunately the role desires some Linux knowledge (although not essential, it would be good to have), and at this moment I have none. Is there anywhere that someone can recommend I look to give me a brief overview of administrating Linux? Many many thanks in advance Iain

Just thought I'd bump this back up to the top. This post is going to be advertised tomorrow (I am led to believe), the pay scale will be in the region of SO1 which equates to approx £24k pa and will be a full "Network Manager" role.

This isn't technically to do with work, but help would be appreciated nonetheless. I've got a PC which i'm working on which has (probably due to a virus) had it's control panel disabled in the registry. I found a registry fix for it, however unfortunately the registry editing has also been disabled. I've run symantec on it, pulled off all viruses I can find. Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty stuck, can only think to reload the PC, but i'm loathed to do it. cheers

My current Salary is around the £18k range, but this is at the top of scale 4. With regards where I'm going next, no I am not staying in education i'm off to be a consultant developer.

Afternoon all, This is just a bit of a heads up with regards a position which may be coming available in the not too distant future (although it is obviously not guaranteed as no decision has been formalised). I've just resigned my post at Hazel Grove High School, a designated specialist school in Maths Science and Technology, which is just south of manchester in the Stockport area. The role is that of "IT Support Manager" but in effect it is a network manager's role as there is nobody above you in terms of a hierarchy through to the line manager who is the school's deputy headteacher. The school has in the past been very keen to spend a significant amount of money on IT within the school. This would be a good role for someone who has 2/3 years experience as a technician and is looking to make that first step up. If anyone wants anymore information, drop me a PM or email me....... Morning all, My headteacher has recently said to me that she is happy to bring in an additional IT Technician on a temporary short term basis. The problem is, i don't know where to even begin looking. Are there agencies for this sort of thing, for example? I'm only looking for someone to come in at a technician level, basically to free up my own time so I can do more critical/interesting jobs. Basically i'm looking for an idea of where to look and an idea of what kind of costs i could expect to incur, my only thoughts at the moment are to contact the local universities and colleges and see if we can get a student in on a kind of work placement scheme, although having worked with students before i would prefer to bring someone in who would be useful almost immediately Any ideas people can throw at me would be greatly appreciated. Morning all, Just a quick question really. I am currently using Brightstar Arcserve Backup to backup the three most important of our 10 servers. Having had a significant amount of work done over the summer, including the installation of Exchange 2003 for student use, I would like to take the oppurtunity of changing our backup software. This is also partly because I don't have complete faith that it's doing what I need it to. I'm looking, therefore, for a new piece of backup software which will allow me to backup PDC, file server, print server, Sims and additional DC. But will also allow me to backup two exchange servers. Cheers for your responses. Ric - apologies, when i swap the two wireless access points the fault remains. the points only seem to work when not in the room. With regards the hardware we use. The whole department has been given Acer Travelmate C01 Tablet PC's. These have in built wireless devices. The Access point we use is a D-link box i cannot remember the exact model number off the top of my head though, but we are using WEP. The problem hasn't always existed. The system has been in place for around 18 months, and the problem has only existed for around the last 6 weeks. There has been some work done in the area, and it's possible that something has been put into the building which is now interfering with the wireless, I will check it tomorrow.

Should really have done this before I started begging for help..... I've always worked in the education sector since leaving university 3 years ago - yes I am quite young. I'm currently the acting network manager for an average school in the stockport area. We have 1300 students and approximately 130 staff (But this seems to change daily). We have something in the region of 400 PC's and 100 laptops all running Windows XP Pro. 9 Servers all running Windows Server 2003. 60 Projectors and 50 printers of various makes and models. Our IT Support team now has 3 members, myself and two technicians. Think that's it for now. Hope this is the first of many posts.

Evening everyone, I'm having a fairly longstanding issue with the wireless connection in one of our departments. We use wireless in our PE department to allow them to take a register when in changing rooms. Unfortunately i've come unstuck with the problem it seems to have developed. The problem that we have is......The wireless will work fine to begin with for around half an hour. The signal will then gradually weaken until there is no signal at all. I have tried the obvious things, i've swapped the WAP out for another and the supposedly faulty box has sat in another area of the school and worked perfectly for over a week. Yet as soon as i swap it back, the same fault occurs. I've tested the main link back to the switch, and I have a PC running on it that has worked perfectly fine as well. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. Cheers in advance.
