  1. Hi I've been doing a fresh install and getting this error message. Just as a test, I installed a brand new VM with Windows Server 2003 R2 and downloaded all critical updates. I didn't install anything else, as I wanted to check whether any other apps on the production server were causing the problem. I then ran the install from the Spring 2010 iso, and got exactly the same result. Despite getting the error message during installation, Sims runs, but it tells me I need to run the configuration utility. Trying to rerun this gives the same SQL error. Seems strange that it doesn't install straight "out of the box". Can't see how Validate Memberships can be relevant to a fresh install. Any ideas? Thanks.
  2. Ours seems to have started working with a server restart. Not sure why, but not going to look a gift horse in the mouth...
  3. I don't see this from the OP. Surely the issue is about mapping to the shares that are available on the local servers at whatever site the user is on. By making all shares available regardless of site, and ensuring the client maps to the share on a server on the same site, isn't the problem solved? (apart from the FRS traffic over the WAN, of course!)
  4. Automatic creation of user folders for home, roaming profile and redirected folders. - Ask the Directory Services Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs may be of some use.
  5. Sorry, don't know if this has changed in WS2008, other than knowing that there may be a problem with mixed WS2003/2008 networks. The basic idea is that you can use Distributed File System to maintain multiple copies of shares on different servers. Set up the shares as normal on each server, with a master copy of each one on a specific server. Say, for example, the share was called HOME$ and you wanted it available on SERVER1, SERVER2 and SERVER3 on 3 different sites. Create \\SERVER1\HOME$, \\SERVER2\HOME$ and \\SERVER3\HOME$. Ensure an up-to-date copy is on one of the servers, say SERVER1 for example. Then, in DFS, create a new domain-based DFS root, identify \\SERVER1\HOME$ as the master copy, and the others as replicas, and Windows should use FRS to replicate the files to all 3 servers and keep them updated. If big shares best to kick this off on a Friday afternoon! Once this is done, you can map to the share based on the domain name rather than any particular server, say for example \\curric.myschool.local\HOME$. As long as you have configured your sites and subnets properly in AD, the DFS client should identify the server best placed to provide the share and connect to that.
  6. Might be set on either your DNS or DHCP server using WPAD.
  7. Thanks to all who replied. The original message is down to the fact that Office isn't installed, which I can't do as I'm waiting for the school to sort out a site license. In the meantime, have tried from a desktop with Office installed, but no joy. I don't get the error message (as pointed out, it only means Office isn't installed) but can't connect to the document server.
  8. We had various issues during the install, and eventually removed SIMS and reinstalled from an up-to-date SIMSInst.exe from a new setups folder.
  9. Thanks for that. Server name changed from SERVER1 to ADMIN1, and folder name was changed accordingly.
  10. Just had a look, and now things seem to have changed (although this seems to have happened at some point over the long weekend)... Although Services snap-in reports that document server service is running, netstat doesn't report the port as open, and clients fail to connect to it. Have restarted the service, but this makes no difference. Dmconfig reports that the documents are on C: and the Backup is on D:. If I try to change this with Dmconfig it crashes with a permission issue, even though I have Full Control on the file it can't access.
  11. Good point! This is the error on the server, which doesn't have office installed. However, users are still reporting that reports aren't working, so it may be that they're getting a different message. I'll check it out. Thanks.
  12. If the faulty DC was your only GC server, demoting it would be a bad idea!
  13. By the way, it seems to affect any report.
  14. Hi guys Thanks for the replies. I was working with Andy on this one. To try to answer your queries... We backed up the entire contents of the Docstorage folder on an old server that was being decommissioned, and restored the contents to a new server. The Docstorage location was definitely updated on the new server, and I believe it was also checked via dmconfig. The original server was running Windows Server 2003 32-bit, and the new server is WS 2008 64-bit. Any pointers would be appreciated Thanks Mark
  15. Just a thought - has anyone tried WPAD to configure them?
  16. That's a lot to synch. Should be incremental, but I guess it's possible that as it hasn't managed to get a full synch in the first place it just keeps trying that. Might be worth giving it as much time as it needs to synch the lot, just once to see if that fixes the problem.
  17. Sorry, haven't read the whole thread in detail, but have you tried allocating more disk space to caching offline files?
  18. Hi A strange problem.. two PCs only on one specific site are experiencing problems with the formatting of one website. Looking at the site it was obvious they weren't applying the CSS. I viewed the page source, and tried entering the URL of the CSS page directly into IE8. It popped up a notepad window with a few random spurious characters. Tried the same on another PC on site that doesn't have the problem, and was able to read the CSS. I tried clearing the IE cache, figuring a corrupted version of the file was cached, but this had no effect. All PCs on site use the same proxy server, which is the same one used by all schools in the borough. Anyone come across this issue, or have any ideas? Thanks in advance...
  19. World Jam in Essex? Was that in Tiptree?
  20. Some of the modules in the BTEC course should give you a good start in that direction; others are a bit off-beam, but might help to keep your future options open.
  21. Thanks mightymrp. I'm not sure if this is the same issue, as I'm happy to have 2TB partitions, I just want 2 of them on the same RAID array. Have wiped it and started again with 2 RAID5 arrays, so should be ok after another install.
  22. Nobody? Oh well, guess I'll have to wipe it and start again!
  23. The host records should really be cnames as they point to a host that already has an existing host record, but it doesn't really matter as long as you don't try to set up reverse lookup on them all.
  24. Also, should've mentioned, technically it's not subdomains you need, just host records which you already have, so no need to pay any extra for a subdomain.
