Ah, I see. The G41 chipset is an accelerated chipset, I believe, which is why it's fairly capable. Sadly for us, the majority of our machines are not new enough to have boards with this chipset, so most of our 'bog standard' machines wouldn't cope!

Well, you can argue that both ways. XP and W7 are not designed to be server OSs. If you choose to use one as such, you can expect their to be limitations - 'artificially' engineered or otherwise.

When you say 'bog standard pc with onboard graphics', what are the onboard graphics? What is the editing software called?

I'd go for John's advice here. Get an HDD camera if you can. If you check what type of files a camera produces (different manufacturers save different file formats) and pick one suitable to you (MPG is a safe bet), you can copy it from the device like you would any file from a pen drive making it easy to back up, it'll work in most editors and shouldn't take long to burn to a regular video DVD if that's what you need to do. Our school use Sony cameras for it's media studies course. The students get on fine with them, and recent ones have nice touch-screen displays rather than fiddly buttons, so are not too difficult to use. If you want easy, as laserblazer says, avoid anything that says 'AVCHD' on it. It's a pretty strong high definition compression system that (unless you have suitably accelerated graphics) will push your average computer even to play it back.

Like many have and are looking to do, we're wanting to move to a vanilla network and get rid of CC3. For one thing, it has too many quirks. For another, as mentioned, most of what CC4 offers can be achieved by other means. We've also found recently that RM's support isn't as good as we'd like it to be, high cost/low availability of spare parts, poor spec laptops (we've found better elsewhere that are RM compatible) etc. Mostly however, we're not happy with the cost. I would imagine that we'd take a closer look at CC4 if it wasn't going to cost us around £65k just for licenses, without even mentioning hardware upgrades, new servers and commissioning...

As soon as you remember the tablet part of Windows 8's target market, that starts to make sense. And I can see it working, too... I'd be surprised if it couldn't at least be made smaller or possibly turned off in favour of regular menus for desktop users, though.

Don't imagine there's a fix for that. The message is an inevitable side effect of restricting TM, and as the keyboard will keep on sending the shortcut, it'll keep producing the message. I wouldn't worry about it - there's nothing you can do and it's their own time they're wasting. ...Which they know and are probably taking advantage of!

This is probably as much to do with simplification as it is space saving... How often does your average (and I stress average here. I mean like your Mum, not those more like ourselves who want more from our browsers) use any of the functions in the menu bar? At most, people regularly use their bookmarks and occasionally history, which have a sidebar. Your average person isn't interested in the 'View Source' or 'Page info' options, so they've been hidden by default. You can turn them back on if you want, but most people don't want them, so they're not there. This approach makes software simpler for the less technically inclined. They can get started and get what they want from it much easier and without distraction this way. It's a relatively common approach to interface design these days, and it makes a whole lot of sense when you think about it.

View > Toolbars > Tabs on top. You can change it from the 'chromey' version back to how v3 used to be...

Does it do this for all external media (USB Drives/bootable CD's etc)? Has this mac ever booted from your FW drive? I read somewhere that you may need to unplug then reconnect the drive while the Mac is switched on before some devices will be seen. The easiest way to do this would be to stop the boot process by plugging another bootable device in, then re-connect your FW drive while it waits for you to choose where to boot from. Also got a niggling thought in the back of my mind that SL doesn't support FW booting, but that could be entirely fictitious!

You should be able to do this with a manual PList entry in WGM. On a laptop, set the trackpad settings as you'd like them for all users, then go to ~/Library/Preferences and make a note of the the appropriate plist (on my 2007 MBP, it's 'com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist', but yours may differ, so check modification dates as you set up your trackpad preferences). Then, in WGM go to the computer group you'd like to set these preferences in, hit Preferences, Details, then import the preference list with the '+'. Should get you there.

We don't provide support staff to IT classes like that by default. For one thing, we can't - we've twice as many IT teachers as technicians! Certain classes on certain days may get support upon request, though. For example, logging new users into our Media Studies Macs at the start of the year.

We use WinDirStat to keep an eye on what's filling up our servers.

I have the same issue. I figured it was probably some DNS thing as our XServe has two internal NICs... Never worked it out and now I just run SA from the server itself via Screen Sharing/ARD.

I concur completely! The orchestral versions of Hybrid stuff are pretty darned good! Have you heard the Widescreen version of Disappear Here yet? It's fantastic.

Previous versions of OS X don't support newer hardware. Hardware will only run the version of OS X it shipped with or later.

We had that for a while. Seems to be resolved. We're used to EMBC's little quirks, as are our staff! We should'a known our uplink upgrade wouldn't go so smoothly without something else going wrong!
