Hi blan, Welcome to Edugeek This is normal when you p2v because underneath the 'hardware' is still changing, admittedly it's changing from the physical PC chassis to a 'vmware virtual' one but it's still a change, and still enough for the activation to kick off. If you're finding it isn't working with your key any longer, it may be because the key was OEM and it's not playing ball nicely with the different underlying hardware. Do you have any volume license keys (VLK) kicking around for XP? That may be your best bet. If you're just doing this for a single machine I wouldn't worry about sysprep.

I'd try the safe mode route but I'd leave it on that hung screen for a couple of hours to see if it's just grinding slowly through or has actually hang. Have you checked the RAID controller is happy and that there's no issues there? Another option might be booting off of a CD to get to a command prompt and running a chkdsk to make sure the filesystem is happy. I'd be in the background preparing for the worst though in having to restore a backup, or lacking one of those, building a new OS and salvaging data from the disks.

Do you have a backup to restore from? Any ideas on recent changes to the OS, windows updates etc? Did it fail and cause you to need to power on, or did it just not come back from a reboot? Has the hardware checked out OK?

Whilst internally yeah, you would want your ADFS name to resolve to the internal side, saves it going 'out and back'. Though, if your 'off domain but in school' test still uses the same DNS servers it's likely this is a red herring but still sensible to do. You can add a DNS zone to your internal DNS that is just "adfs.school.co.uk" with the 10.x.y.z IP so you don't need to reinvent the wheel for the whole zone.

You may just want to make the zone for the whole dns record (to avoid it breaking other records on that domain or you could add all of the other records too) Redirecting name resolution of a single host for an external DNS zone | FailSys

No real gotchas, all of our upgrades went without a hitch. (it checks pre-reqs etc and a couple of our older sites failed those and the installer helpfully fixed the necessary things for us) Its worth noting the change in compression level on the jobs if upgrading from v6 to v7. If you had a job previously set on "Optimal", it will now be on "High" (it's the same because there's a 'new' optimal that aims to use less resources) The other thing to make sure you pay attention to is parallel processing which has reduced the backup window on most of our customers by around 35%. (though it's an all or nothing setting globally at the moment so may not be viable in your particular scenario) It's worth also noting the throughput reporting has changed considerably so it looks "lower" than it did before but it's actually not, it's just reporting in a way deemed more useful. Yeah, I think getting your image based back up onto some removable media is first step. Then introduce second DC since you know you have a good (broken) backup to go back to if needbe. See what happens on this second DC, plus that gives you a machine to mess around on knowing it's not the end of the world if you brick it. If we assume it is also "broken" on replication then we know we need to mend the data so we start looking at re-creating zones etc. Might just find it replicates fine, and replicates authoritatively backwards too..!

I'd look at dropping in a temp DC as a second box to at least let something sync and see whether it's "ok" on the far end (allowing you to sleep better) and go from there. Even a little VM would be sufficient and it'll help us see the lie of the land. Your 25 days of backups (albeit broken ones) are good enough for things not to get 'worse' as such as you can always revert back to this point in time. We can all go on about backup strategies etc but it doesn't fix the problem at hand so lets focus on that for now.

I'd expect it before the end of the year, probably in the next few months. Suspect per previous version upgrades a move from 5.1 to 5.5 won't be a big deal so no reason to delay an extra host implementation as long as your licensing is under SnS for upgrades.

Suspect nested esxi would be your friend in that instance.

I'd imagine as long as the hardware version is kept note of it should be fine. Worst case scenario I suppose is you store a copy of the compatible ESXi and VC client with the archive. I don't recall seeing anything in writing about a specific policy on it though so if you do ask them, let us know

Very interesting issue, I'd recommend you open a bug with Ubuntu and see what happens. As you say, it looks like a compatibility issue between the jmicron dock station and the OS. (out of interest, as you say it works fine on an earlier Ubuntu it sounds like a regression of sorts so should be worth fixing)
