  1. Hi there, We had a FOG installation but it wasn't working, and it wasn't set up by me either. We've now started again and i'm setting it up. I'm following the fog wiki, ubuntu is setup and on the network as per the wiki instructions. However when trying to follow the fog instructions i am reaching a blank almost straight away. The trouble is it says to download the installation package to the /opt directory, but i have no access, and i can't use the admin sudo command as there is a proxy and i don't know how to set a system wide proxy. I'm using ubuntu installation 9.04, and FOG 0.28. Any help appreciated.
  2. Thanks ect, it would be nice to see a copy of the script if that is possible please? PiqueABoo, I will have a look at GPP.
  3. Read the wiki and it's very helpful, thank you. However I do have a question, although it probably sounds stupid, you could put this in a GPO in the Computers Active Directory group, and it will apply to all my sub groups of computers yes? And I'm assuming as you can have a random group after a group that monitors the first 4 characters you could have another group in there monitoring the first 5 letters as well?
  4. Hi there, The problem we have is that due to the way our active directory OU's are setup we cannot assign printers via active directory. This way we have to log on and off several users and modify the registry on each pc manually and individually which takes a lot of time. The print server we have is Server 2008 R2 and our clients are all XP based. I just wondered if there was a quick and easy way to apply default printers to a computer quickly and efficiently either from the server or even the client say a quick setup program or complete working registry that we could import? Any ideas?
  5. Hey, i just found lansweeper and it looks good, even the free version, still need some heads up though as to if it is good or not. I use spiceworks in our school, but it's software scanning doesn't actually scan all the software that is installed on the pcs in the school hence why i'm looking at a separate tool for this. But the rest of spiceworks's features do a very good job indeed.
  6. Hedghog, i had a look and the default save type is set as .doc which is what it should be, thanks though. Mako, You're right that the obvious is sometimes overlooked but not in this case, that was the first thing i did because i thought the staff member with the laptop was not doing that either lol. However your second idea worked, I will have to remember that for the future. Thank you very much for your help guys,
  7. Thank you for the replies... The reason for having given up on FOG is that we hit a problem with "RNFR command failed", tried every suggestion i have found, or been told but still not luck, even tried reinstalls. Thanks for the heads up on the sizes of VM's and also possible peripheral devices problems. I didn't know about the peripheral device issue with VIrtual PC, however i know VirtualBox does work with USB devices as I have used VB before. In terms of citrix, i have seen it used in a sixth form college on a small scale, it was mainly used to remote in from home by some of the students doing IT. We don't have the capacity to run Citrix here or any other types of servers as we're on a very small budget this year. But thanks for the suggestion, maybe we'll look at that in the future. Thank you for the information this is very helpful.
  8. Hi there I have a problem in school at present on a laptop, where in word a specific user cannot see the "Save As" function on word because it is not there, the function that appears to have replaced that is "Save As Web Page" now i know i could click that and change the file type to save it as and it would work fine however the staff here are not always inclined to use work arounds. I was wondering if anyone here would know of a setting or reason why it now defaults to "Save As Web Page..." rather than "Save As" in Microsoft Word 2003? Any replies appreciated Regards Darryl Wilcox
  9. Hi It may be difficult for me to explain what it is I am trying to achieve here, so all questions regarding what I am trying to accomplish are welcomed and I will answer as clearly as I can. The school i work at runs XP Pro througout our school with some servers for the domain, gp etc etc. Me and my colleague have discussed the idea that a PC will load it's OS as normal, and when you logon via the logon screen it launches the virtual PC required. We realise that the virtual PC will take longer to launch and we're happy with that, and we're also happy to devote all the PC's resources to the virtual PC on each machine. The idea behind the virtual machine is for a few reasons. One to deliver a different experience depending on which area of the school you are from, example: Primary, High School, Staff. And two, the ability that a single file has everything pre-loaded and will make for an easier fix should any problems arise, not affecting the main computer itself. (i.e. we can just transfer the original virtual machine easily to fix any problems). In addition we are aware of ghosting, for instance we do have a FOG setup which we are having problems with which is why we're considering alternatives. My overall question would be does anyone think this could be accomplished? Has anyone used or tried anything similar and what were the results? Also can anyone see any possible flaws to the idea that we may dislike? All responses appreciated. Regards Darryl
  10. It was setup prior to me starting here, however it was never tested and never officially worked, i picked up from where it dropped off. I have double checked the installation which appears correct, FOG user details correct etc so i am up to speed there besides this hiccup but pretty much a fresh installation yes. Linux distribution Ubuntu 9.04. I have never managed to get further than this stage using FOG. P.S. apologies for delayed reply I have been on holiday over the christmas period.
  11. I have searched the forum for this error and all reponses i have tried but still to no avail. To clarify, the full error is: Warning: ftp_rename() [ function.ftp-rename]: RNFR Command failed. in /var/www/fog/service/Post_Stage2.php on line 133 unable to move /images/dev/"MacAddress".000 to /images/IBMREFERENCE Any ideas appreciated.
