Hi there, We have a PC that failed a PAT test, the lead was fine on it's own and so it has to be the power supply itself. We bought a new power supply which is fine for the job and that has failed, and failed the test worse than the original PSU inside the PC. Any ideas? Should I take it back to the shop and ask them to replace it?

For a few days now we have been trying and trying to get this working seemlessly, we're using a PAC file obviously but its just to dictate whether you use the proxy or not so that laptops can be used by staff out of school. The problem we have found is that in some setups of IE8 (no common denominator) both on W7 or XP when accessing HTTPS addresses it has a delay before rendering the page. Quite a lengthy delay for todays internet, say up to 30 seconds before it actually does anything which obviously is not ideal, especially for staff. What we have also found is that on a standard ADSL connection, no proxy, basically like someones typical home network it works absolutely fine so the issue appears to be between using the proxy on our current network and HTTPS websites. In addition we have trialled IE7 and in all cases regardless it works fine with everything as if it were manually set up. Just to reiterate it doesn't affect all instances of IE8, however we have just opened one of our brand new laptops, straight out of the box, set that up and it has the trouble loading HTTPS websites. However older machines running XP and IE8, some do and some don't. I was wondering if anyone had experienced this issue before? Well this is what I thought, maybe i'll put it forward again and see what happens! I know Googles privacy statements etc are very comprehensive in saying they do not look at the data unless asked to by the owner. I'd have thought under DP that would be fine.

Apparently our school is not allowed to use Google apps due to the fact that the data could be stored on a data centre abroad, and allegedly this stops us under data protection. Is this correct?

Hi to all, This may seem like a strange request, however we have a student of special educational needs who is obsessed with RM equipment. We don't actually have much in the way of RM equipment in our school, however the students parents wish to build him a PC with RM casing and monitor. They have a case, however they do not have a monitor, if there is any one/school in SUFFOLK who has an old RM monitor (CRT) that they would be happy to give away for free could you please reply here or PM me. Hi, Will the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A plus and LaserJet CM2320nf printers work with Server 2008 and or R2? They say they will work with Server 2003 and Vista however I need to know if they will work in a 2008 server environment. Does anyone know whether they will or not?

Hi there, We're currently searching for printers for various rooms in the school, were keen on HP because they have rarely faulted us in the years they have been used here. Were looking for 2 x inkjets for around £250 - £300 each or 1 x laser for around £500 - £600. We're also looking for an all in one printer at around £500 and also a good laser printer for up to around £2000 (automatic duplex preferred). All need to be compatible with server 2008. I have looked on HP and various partner sites and I can find quite a few however I need recommendations and reviews from people who have had experience with them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Looking at the PC in question (despite the same issue having happened to at least 10 of our other new PCs) all GP objects have applied except for those under "Computer Configuration Summary" -> "Component Status". Under this section the first line reads "Group Policy Infrastructure" then the status reads "Failed", the error with it reads: Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below. The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other components is not available. Additional information may have been logged. Review the Policy Events tab in the console or the application event log for events between 23/08/2010 11:28:39 and 23/08/2010 11:28:39. The issue is causing GP software not to install despite the GPO's being applied this is then apparently conflicting with it and it is not being applied. Any ideas?

Hi there, A few months ago, 2 computers in our ICT suite had this issue. This issue is where a student or teacher inserts a clip art picture into a word document and then goes to print the document. The document prints, but the clip art pictures are not there. However we recently reinstalled the OS on all our ICT computers and now the same problem is happening to them all causing a lot of issues! I have tried to figure out any possible reason for this but with no luck, has anyone experienced this before and can help, or know what things I could try? Extra info: We're running XP Pro SP3, and Office 2003 which is deployed over the network (but it would be weird if the network part is the issue as it's installed on every other computer in the school and working fine on them. Any help appreciated.

Hi there, The actual error I recieve when trying to open the file in word is attached below. It's a Word 2.0 file apparently, and it is allegedly blocked by a registry setting, can anyone tell me the registry setting that blocks the file and how I might change it? I am not a system administrator (on the servers themselves) but I can ask for the changes if they need to be done on there. Any help appreciated. word_error.bmp

Well interestingly the drivers are fully up to date, but I will have to check the BIOS. In terms of the screens, we also have a few with vertical lines going down them. My favourite laptop model from dell is the E5500 so far, although the styling is boring, their battery life and performance are very good.

Hi there, We have about 10 odd Dell D520 Latitude laptops that were purchased a year and a half or so ago and we appear to be having some severe performance issues with them, even very soon after reinstalling them (say a week or two). Now we also have quite a few Dell Latitude D505's in school however these still run rather smoothly without a reinstall since we bought them. So as you should be able to guess we're rather confused about the difference in performance between the two machines and yet their setups are almost identical (software related) except for the drivers. I was wondering, has anyone else had issues with the D520's performance? And could anyone hazard a guess as to why this might be?

I have figured it out, I should have checked this before. Found this on another website: "If you get a Microsoft Visual Basic error with a code like “System Error &H80004005 (-2147467259)”, this means that the voice currently selected is not totally compatible with WordTalk, so you will have to use the WordTalk Configure tool (it looks like a spanner) to choose another voice. Unfortunately, the excellent Elan voices used by programs like Clicker 5 and Solo don’t work with WordTalk."

Hi A member of staff at our school wishes for the add-on toolbar "WordTalk" to be installed onto the PCs she uses in school. However I went to install it and all went fine, applied the toolbar to word, started word typed a random paragraph to test it and pressed the "P" button on the WordTalk toolbar (which makes WordTalk speak the paragraph). Instead of speaking it, it just comes up with the error "System Error &H80004005 (-2147467259). Unspecified error". I searched online and found a Microsoft support page, which you can find here. It explains how it's to do with the .exe made in VisualBasic 6. I understand what it's saying however the weird thing is that the member of staff has already used the toolbar at home and it works. The only thing I can think of is that there's something not on our system that the program needs to function or even something on our system that prevents it from working. Any ideas?

We found that the All Users folder itself had the correct permissions, but when we checked it's subfolders it didn't. So we clicked the checkbox for all subfolders to inherit permissions from it's parent folder in the "All Users" folder. The Omnino III's are good, the specs are brilliant, however we had to buy the screws separately for the monitors and to screw in the cases. The cases had to be screwed in because of safety reasons, the back of the case is rather awkward to get on, but once the screw is in place and the case correctly in place it won't come off which is good. The only annoying thing is windows search which no matter how long the omnino has been on it nearly always causes the "End Program" issue when logging off or shutting down.

Hi again, and thanks for all the above responses and advice We currently use ranger to capture some program installs, it simply takes an image of before and after and wraps this up into a package to deploy. Has worked well for us in the past, about all that has though! We don't use the account manager in ranger, just the software package distributer, ranger reporter which simply lists users / computers web pages access (but seems to have gone in v7) and within lan ranger there are reports of applications run. really for what we're payingit seems a little silly to continue with ranger - also it is having implications on other things within the network (offering remote assistance for one) We do use MSIs to deploy software but must confess this has only been software that has come to us with MSIs as an offering. We have never really looked at creating them ourselves but perhaps will investigate this. We do need some very simple web access monitoring. Something all staff could use would be even better, so as user friendly as possible. All this needs to do is list URLs visited by users or PCs I think i may make a new thread dedicated to this We connect through various proxies already (managed by LEA or ISP) which are age related giving us filtering too, so i'm guessing an addiotional proxy will cause problems there? Again thanks for all advice, and any further you may offer!

Our network has been built also as Vanilla as possible. The software we deploy we use MSI's. We have AVG 8 net ed. I'll check out Installer 2 Go as I need an MSI creator for something else.

Hi We currently use Ranger for web monitoring, application monitoring and some software deployment. I was wondering if anyone here knows of any good Freeware or opensource tools that do the same thing, it doesn't matter if they're individual tools or a whole suite. We have a tight budget this year and we don't like ranger so we're looking to move away from it. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Is it possible to deploy remote desktop users and settings to clients via active directory instead of doing each PC manually?

We have a problem with our new(ish) viglen omnino III pcs in that the group policy permissions don't apply correctly. On all other PCs in the school, pupils of the school cannot access modify content of the "All Users" folder in documents and settings, however on the omnino III's they can. They've been able to move icons to their desktop meaning that they're no longer there for others to use, of course causing problems. We're sure this isn't the only folder they can access that they shouldn't be able to. Has anyone else experienced this with Omnino III desktop PCs? We have Omnino II's and they don't have this issue.

For the proxy, what if you don't have to use a username and password to get through it? I haven't been prompted for a username and password is just comes up with *Checking package: apache2 ... failed!
