hi guys now, i'm sure i know what the answer to this will be, but lets give it a go anyway!! i've got a laptop with a faulty hard drive. the OS has corrupted, and it doesn't recognise that it actually has windows installed on it at all, so i can't do a repair on it either. now, i can take the hard drive out of the laptop and browse it as an external drive on another computer just fine. my question is, is there a way i can get files from the offline cache of that hard drive? i know where the directory is that they are stored, but as i'm sure you're aware, they're just stored as random SYS files! the member of staff who's laptop it is has been working on the laptop quite a lot at the weekend and is desperate for the files back. is there a program that can pull files out of it, or can i put the cache onto another computer and get them out of the cache that way??

ok excellent that sounds brilliant! basically i am planning to use an access database to store personal data of people attending for contact and medical reasons, and then the excel spreadsheet will be for actually registering them every week. included in my access database is currently a registration bit, but it is very clunky to use when i have about 50+ people to register as quickly as possible. anyway, the database i'm using is the default access 2007 one that does registrations. would it be an option, to speed along the clunky access registration, to use the excel spreadsheet to 1) pull their names into and 2) put the registration details back into for the relevant date (probably just a Y or N for registration)

Hi guys i'm looking to try and pull the data from an access database into an excel spreadsheet. I can do this one of two ways preferrably. I have an access database of information about people, contact details etc, but i then want to do a simple register to go along with it. now, i think that there are two ways of doing this that should be quite simple, i just don't know how to do them! first, i thought that i could make it so that when i open the excel spreadsheet, it looks at the database and fills the first column with the names of all the people, much like a lookup does to pull data from 1 sheet to another. the only reason i can think this wouldn't work, is that the database has a password for obvious security reasons. secondly, i thought that i could do it the opposite way round, and when i open the access database, it automatically opens (and updates?) the spreadsheet. the only problem with this is, i need to be able to add new people to the database, and then they immediately appear inside the excel spreadsheet. any ideas how to do this? or is there a better way of doing it?

yeh, the usb isn't overlength. its been installed for a few years now with no problems. we have had some problems in other rooms like this, but you can get range extenders which we have used there.

ah ok i've found with mine, that some of the devices stop working, some carry on working. i don't need to unplug the board at all, but if i restart the computer then it does start working again, so i figure it has to be something with the controller going screwy.

the IWB is permanently plugged in. The pen drive does work in the computer, although i'm not entirely sure at what point the board and the pen drive do go wrong obviously, as i am not the user of it. i've asked the teacher to try and gain as much info as he can as to exactly when it is happening, and if there is a trigger, so that i can work out the cause and therefore a fix.

but we have the same install across the entire site, so surely if that is the case then we would find that problem in more than one place?

i don't think it could be this, as this wouldn't cause the IWB to drop off at the same time, as this is just a human interface device

Hi guys, not sure if this is the most appropriate place for this, but i'm having a really strange technical problem and don't know exactly why, which is why i didn't know if it necessarily belongs here!! what is happening, is that we have a computer in a teaching room, and every so often, the USB devices will suddenly stop working. it doesn't seem to happen at any particular time, they have been working for months since the last problem, and now its happened twice within a week! what happens is that our IWB stops working, and so does the teacher's pen drive, although the bit that confused me more is that the keyboard and mouse continue to work as normal. this is what threw me, as i would have just assumed it was a controller issue otherwise, but to have some devices carry on working and some not was a bit odd. does anyone have any ideas what could cause this to be happening? the only thing i did mention to the teacher, was to make sure that he always uses the safely remove hardware when unplugging his pen drive, as this could cause a problem.

yeh we were wanting to cache the content if possible

i have had a browse around the forums, but don't seem to be able to find an answer to my question, although a lot of stuff that is quite close. i want to install google earth on our network, but when i do, i want it all to cache to a folder on the network (rather than the local pc), as this way it will save on our internet bandwidth and multiple teachers can use it then. any ideas how to do this? something i've missed?
