Lightspeed vs Smoothwall
Eappariello replied to Jollity's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Real time login and logout information, distinguished names, user and computer OU info (handy for location based filtering), multiple IP info ( for clients having multiple IP's and IP4 plus IP 6), also lets us be aware of fast user switching if enabled. Of course not everyone uses AD so there is also support for different ldap clients and a OS X version. Probably stuff I have forgotten, you don't have to install it, but it gives nice detail, is <1mb invisible on the client itself. Simon -

It's an option not mandatory, but it gives rich information that isn't available from a challenge or the IP headers. -

Some good discussion on here regarding filtering techniques. I would be happy to explain how Lightspeed's URL DB is in conjunction with other features such as MyBigCampus (Discussed elsewhere on here), if anyone is interested, for comparison sake Simon -
Lightspeed vs Smoothwall

I will answer this and hope my posts dont get taken down by a Smoothwall MOD I would like to answer more questions about our product here, but most replies are taken as sales related so are taken down. The agent gives realtime and rich information of which user is logged on where (there is an agent for thin client servers also), plus what groups, OU's computer name, computer OU etc. This means for school owned devices the filter always knows what policy should be applied transparently. For environments allowing personal devices "BYOD, BYOT"...did I miss any ?, the filter can be set to ask for authentication of "Unknown" devices. So, school owned devices authentication is transparent, personal devices have to authenticate before access (or get a defined default policy). Add to this no proxy settings, or proxying in any form and BYOD is very easy. Hope this helps explain the concept. Simon -

Anyone using My Big Campus ?
Eappariello replied to Bashir's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I will try to explain what MBC is, as it’s something that does not fit into an existing label, or product type, and is something new! My Big Campus (MBC) does have VLE type functions, these are being expanded upon on a regular basis due to customer feedback. It also has collaboration features, blogging, document creation, personal storage, and many other functions, but unlike other learning environments it is tightly integrated into the Lightspeed web filter, and has E-Safety at the heart of its design. The integration between the cloud based MBC environment and the local web filter, means a fully monitored and recorded environment that is linked to the schools local MIS and authentication systems. It also means that the integration with the web filter provides smart and dynamic content control for resources used on MBC by teaching staff, and students and can mean the end of overblocking for those using MBC. There are lots of other benefits of a blended learning environment that is not an island on a network, and its easy enough to have a look around MBC so I have put some links below if anyone is interested: MBC Tour - My Big Campus Tour - Overview BETT School - signup code c2mx8ey9, school BETT 2012 - https://www.mybigcampus.co.uk/sign-up Hope that clears things up. Anyone using My Big Campus ?
Eappariello replied to Bashir's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Bash, Not sure you will find many MBC users here, they tend to use MBC itself to discuss deployments and experiences etc. If you are not on there already PM me and I will send a link to the demo signup page. If you are a customer already I can send you a link to the Wiki article explaining how to link MBC with your filter (WAM or TTTC), and below are the help videos for using MBC. Using youtube videos within school

There are solutions out there to stream YouTube into the classroom in a safe and legal way. Here is ours: Sharing Safe YouTube Content for K-12 Schools I believe Bloxx has something similar also Hope this helps, its a common dilemma Simon -
I am sure its not targetting Education, or have any features that education needs, and I imagine would have to be a totally descrete site for you guys to even consider it ? We (Lightspeed Systems) have launched a hosted student email system (I wont post any details incase its against the rules), and I would be interested to know what those in education feel is the most important features of a student based email system (Archiving, profanity checking, reporting, interface, single sign on etc).......maybe should be a new thread, but that might be breaking some rules also Thanks Simon

There are solutions out there that allow youtube access in a safe way from a couple of filtering companies and also a couple of free ones that allow video's on an individual basis. The basic concept is: Teacher's have access to youtube and finds a video they want to use. They submit this to a modertor within school who can aprrove them. Once approved its available on an internal public searchable portal for the students and is then streamed from youtube to the students without them ever visiting youtube itself. Hope this helps - youtube can be a great teaching and educational resource. You just need to strip out all the dodgy bits. Simon

Disabling internet in one room.
Eappariello replied to eejit's topic in Network and Classroom Management
If anyone is using Lightspeeds content filter they can use the LAB facility. Define your classroom and a administrator/s for it, then the teacher can goto to a administration page, Lock or Unlock the Internet, and define domains or URL's for Allow or Block. Easy to use, just not well known about
