Hi Gerk That was my thought so I tried the lpadmin command on one of the macs and the printer appeared in the CUPS web interface but does not show in the print & fax area in preferences nor does it show up when going in to an application to try printing. The drivers are installed locally on each mac, is there anything else you have to do? Cheers

Do you still have 10.6 clients in place and did everything still work ok with them after the upgrade? I thought at some point we may have to upgrade but have been putting it off really. We also need to upgrade our deploystudio installation as we can't currently image the newest 10.8 clients at the moment so thats on the to do list as well. I have also just come across a bit of a weird issue, when our 10.7.5 clients bind to OD they are binding with the xserve as the server name which it should but also xserve as the client name. Even though it asks for the mac name in the build.Anyone seen that issue before?

As the title suggests we have a 10.6.8 server which has our windows networked printers installed on to it also. On our 10.6.8 clients these printers are pushed out via WGM and work fine. When trying to do the same with 10.7.5 clients and 10.8.4 it is not pushing the printers out via WGM, the macs are in groups in WGM and those groups have the printers assigned to them. I have installed the Sharp MFD drivers on to the macs themselves but they are not appearing. The clients must be receiving certain settings from WGM as we have a customized login screen etc. If I go on to a client and manually add the printer and put in the admin password it add's the printer and you can print to it but this is no use to the end users as we can't have them adding printers themselves or having any admin passwords obviously. Anyone else come across this issue before? Been searching for answers and other people have had the same issues but no fixes have been published on the articles. Hopefully someone can help it's driving me up the wall!! Cheers

also just a thought, would you now start looking at using server 2008 or for learning become familiar with server 2003 first?

fn-gm its just a test environment at home I'm looking at so I can learn things from the ground up but take on board your info. Is there anything that can mirror firewalls and internet filtering thats free. I'm guessing if I connect my server with all my virtual machines to my router I can bring in internet access and see how that kind of thing works. thanks

If you were to set up a new network from the beginning what order would do create the servers/services in? I'm looking at creating a test network to mirror as real as I can a working network all using vmware. What would be your first server? Domain controller? then where would you go from here? I know in a real world situation not many of us would ever need to set up a network from the ground up as many people inherit them from previous people but want to get a feel of where to begin. i did a years worth of vb whilst at college so i have an idea about variables constants, loops etc but its well worth me having a look over them again and having a look at that site. Cheers for that!

Hi there i'm looking at learning a few new things and wanted to know how to create scripts. Things like startup/logon scripts for various things. Is there anywhere at all that tells you how to start scripting or any book thats a good beginners guide? My current boss just says he cobbles them together from other peoples scripts off the internet but i'd like to understand how to write them an what things mean. Thanks

Hi there Just set up Xibo and testing on one display at the moment. What I was wondering, is there a way to have the regions constantly looping so once they have finished playing all the media items in that region to start over again and keep looping? Cheers

my LM is all for me having training when I sit down one to one and tell him I want to learn more but once we are out of the meeting it just gets forgotton about. A few people I work with say how he is not a very good manager. We have a director of IT who is above my LM and the NM but I don't know what my boss would say if I went over him directly to the top boss. I don't necessarily want to leave, its pretty good pay for a IT Tech round here, literally 5 mins away from home but I won't stay there just for those reasons. Got a test server setup today with VMware any ideas where to go with it? I was thinking of setting up a DC (maybe 2 to look at replication etc), connecting clients to it, how to set up GP from scratch. Maybe look at login scripts (never done these but wanted to learn). Redirected desktop/home folders. can I setup RIS/WDS within a vmware network? never tried using that and did ask to learn it. Is it possible to emulate terminal server and thin clients on vmware? I'm guessing you should be able to everything you can in a real network? Want to basically learn how to set up a network from scratch as I know why things are done at work but never been involved in how they are set up initially. I did in my appraisal I said I wanted to progress and learn a lot more. We talked about me doing an MCSE and my line manager told me to look at the self study books as I said I'd like to try that and so I got a price for the set like he asked and mailed him it but he never bothered to order them. Also managed to get a course at a late availability rate of £500 rather than £1500 but the training dept were to slow to get the forms sorted and course ordered and it ended up filling up. I'm not the kind of person to moan or complain but feel a bit hard done by especially when the network managers assistant came in already having a degree and has been put onto really expensive vmware training as well as the ccna. So i'm going to have another word with my line manager and see what happens but I don't want to go round in circles like this year on year and be stuck here. I really want to learn and progress and have made it really clear how much I want to learn and take on more responsability but seems like they are quite happy to have me doing my job as it is. I'm not asking for anymore money just the oppertunity. Any ideas what to start trying to teach myself? Cheers for the advice already.

Wasn't too sure where to put this so please move if neccessary I've been working at a college as an IT Techncian (well Trainee was original title) for around 3 1/2 years. When I first started I had never worked in IT but had studied it at college and it is what I wanted to do. When I got the job I was told I would be trained up and put through microsoft courses etc to become qualified. As it turns out I was a quick learner and didn't have to go through any of the basic xp courses etc. Up to now I have been on the following courses; Network + The microsoft active directory course MS2279 CCNA. I can do all fault finding repair of PC's, laptops, projectors, whiteboards, helpdesk duties etc. Quite good with active directory and GP. Can create msi's and deploy via GP. Some experience with vlans and cisco switches. Just started moving out software onto server 2008 remote app. Look after the library system and server. I was supposed to start getting trained on the network side of things but then they employed an assistant to the network manager which has pretty much rendered me as technician with little or no involvement in the network side which i want to become familiar with. Its the day to day running of the servers I want to gain experience in to hopefully be able to become a network manager. Is there anything I can do myself to gain this knowledge. I have a server at home which I can run VM's on and wondered what people could suggest I do to progress my career. It would be easy to sit here and take home the money but I want to learn and move forward. Sorry for the long post but I want to learn and keep moving forward, just turned 26 and worried that I am not moving ahead quick enough! Thanks

lol people find some crazy things out! We have a fair few of these printers and had to replace a couple of formatter boards. If only we knew this little trick!

got to agree with whats been said its nigh on impossible to stop it happening. We try to put hard glass screens in areas more prone to damage although we have had a couple smashed!! We have cctv in some areas and found them damaging some of the equipment and bills got sent home to the parents. Although one of them said take us to court because your not gonna get a penny out of us! If the parents are like that what chance have the kids got! It can be a bit demoralising though going backwards and forwards repairing vandalism. We got one area fully back up and running before the xmas break and 3 weeks into this term have 9 machines out of operation due to vandalism

I was after non-helpdesk type pieces of software so other software packages you use in addition to your "job logging software". Although if other people are finding the other information useful that can only be a good thing

cheers i'll give 2008 a go, i'll have a good read up on it and citrix solution also. I didn't have anything to do with the original trial at all so will be good to have a dabble with something new and hopefully get some use out of them. seems silly them being sat doing nothing

it was server 2003, just testing server 2008 for other services so i guess i could try 2008 when im testing these, has there been improvements? We did have all the ones we could autostart an rdp connection and they were fine, the others where we couldn't we left very clear instructions on the walls on how to connect but (mainly teachers, most students were ok) could not do it. i agree they are perfect solutions for admin offices but as management were informed by people of the "issues" etc they dont want to know. nice idea for research machines as they were absolutely fine for general web browsing/office apps

Hi Apologies if this is in the wrong area I couldn't find a definate area to put it in so feel free to move it mods We already have the kayako support suite helpdesk software which is brilliant for what we do with it and serves us very well. What I was wondering is what other bits of software do you use on your helpdesks that you now find you can't live without? Can be anything at all and completely outside the box. Just want to know if there is anything out there we don't know about that might come in really handy. May hopefully throw up something useful for others as well, can be freeware, paid for etc Thanks

Hi there We had a trial of around 20 thin client units in to test to see if they could be used in the college. They are vavrious types HP, Wyse,Jack PC with various OS's linux, xpe etc. Basically the trial was deemed unsuccessful as the students could not use streaming media sites such as you tube etc and people could not log on to them as they had to click on the RDP icon first before logging on! Even though the same people were using the room week in week out. We were not really allowed any additonal money to get additonal software to improve the multimedia aspect of things. So we now have these thin clients in a cupboard doing nothing and I'm wanting to look at other uses for them. The things I have thought of so far are; internet stations library search pods information screens visitor staions. Can anyone think of any other uses for them that I have missed? (they cant go back in as machines to be fully used by students for day to day tasks or I'm afraid in admin offices etc) Also as ever money is tight so using what we have is essential. Thanks!

Sorted! Popped home at lunch and tried another cd/dvd drive in the server and it now boots up first time. The guy who gave me it could of let me know grrr would of saved me a while! Thanks for the reply anyway much appreciated

cheers for the reply synack I have changed the boot order so CD is the first one but it doesn't even try spinning up the CD. It does attempt to read a floppy as the floppy drive lights up and you can hear it check for a floppy disk but it does not attempt the CD drive. It did boot from the CD drive once but I cannot get it do to it again, I'll change the CD drive tonight when I am home from work and see if that resolves the problem.

Hi all, I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to servers so thought i'd post on here as I'm having a couple of problems with a server someone gave to me. I cannot get it to boot from any CD at all. Server2000, server2003, hp smartstart etc. Its not reporting any errors on startup and I have reset it to default in the bios. I can get CD's to boot if I remove the Raid card, does this mean the card is faulty? If I leave it in I can F8 into the RAID setup and set the array as a RAID 5 but then when trying to boot a CD it says non-system disk!? The server in question is as in the title a HP ML370 G4 and the raid adapter says SmartArray 641 controller Help! Cheers Edit- actually now I have removed the raid card and used the onboard and it will still not boot from CD. Done the obvious like changed cd to first in boot priority.

Hi i'm James and work in a fairly large sixth form college as an IT Technician. Currently have approx 2500 users, around 1000 desktops, 250-300 laptops and getting on for 20-25 servers which are being reduced with the aid of virtualisation. Main responsabilities are general tech duties as is to be expected worked here and in IT for 3 years. Really want to get into more network side of the job but oppertunities are not great as we already have 2 network bods working here. Done the CCNA course, N+ and a couple of microsoft courses.
