I've used StarWind and the performance isn't all that great.

Kamran, I've tested ESXi with OpenFiler, FreeNAS, StarWind iSCSI SANS Openfiler is by far the best performing SAN. We're about to go into a live test in a production environment in my company. Just FYI, SAN is still possible on a low budget.
