In the case of Kindles, they do not currently play nicely in proxied environments and this is also the case with a number of Android and iPhone/iPad apps. Android versions below 2.3 also have very poor support for proxy connections and generally apps do not use the proxy settings. There are possible solutions, but they are neither simple nor cheap and highlight sharply the issue of consumer devices not supporting the standards required to work within corporate network environments.

A quick background read on OSCP shows that it is possible for this to be routed via a proxy server, however, unless a bug reported back in 2005 has actually been resolved then the request has to be formatted in a particular way for it to work. As iPhones apparently work and iPads dont my guess is that Apple have broken something. The only way to determine this is for sure is to conduct a proper traffic analysis on the device.

Reaper isn't free, but it's about as close as you'll get ($50) for a fully developed music production suite. I went through this lot some time ago and reinterpreting the legislation for schools is somewhat challenging. I generally start with why copyright exists (to ensure authors or their licensed representatives get paid for their work) and move on from there. The best general rule of thumb is that you do not have the right to use it unless: You created it. You have paid to use it (or some one else has ie the school/LA) It is explicitly being given away for you to use. In all cases the creator usually retains the right to attribution and the other "moral rights" regardless of the state of the commercial rights. The law, however, does allow the use of copyright material for educational purposes, review and some free social activities, though there is clearly a difference between playing a genuine DVD to a class and ripping a duplicate to give to pupils (the argument could be made that since a school is a business, doing so is counterfeiting - a criminal offense). The ERA, CLA, PRS-MCPS Alliance and PPL all have pretty good websites which explain what their licenses cover. I've also discovered that in our LA at least the licenses are managed by the Schools Finacial Services department, though the information doesn't appear to be very high profile!

It seems odd that it's pushing the left hand column out of the way. Are you using tables or DIVs and have you wrapped both the left column and main content in an outer container? Could do with seeing your code really.

I believe, from the development work I've done, that JCE uses the CSS body alignment from the current template. It also uses body background colour etc which is a real pain if you want a dark "outer" area with your fixed width content centred within it. I'm sure there's a hack - I just haven't found it yet.

Hi, I was one of the support team for the core skills project that rolled out SM 5.1.1 across Birmingham between 1997 and 2003. Unfortunately since the project ended in 2003 RM have upgraded SM several times and, as you say, have little interest in supporting old versions. Do you have a full set of CDs in addition to the floppy disk? The installation is started from the "Basics" CD - the license floppy simply contains a list of the components in the various licensing packages. You will also need a license code and Link2ICT can supply that and a full set of installation documantation - you just need to reach the right person since all the people who knew the ins and outs of SM have move to other areas. Try asking for Ken Bearman to be notified about the call (you have raised a call haven't you?). If my install notes are something that people would find useful outside the BGfL I could post the docs on the BGfL Connectivity pages.

Oh one more point - Enforcement of AUP and determination of "consequences" is also an SMT issue. If you find inappropriate material on a teacher's laptop then there is potentially a child protection issue. It MUST be dealt with by SMT or you may well find yourself accused of complicity. It's harsh, but there it is. Ultimately this is a policy issue and not a technical one.

Three points: 1) All schools should have 2 AUPs - 1 for staff and 1 for pupils. 2) Creation of an AUP is a job for the school's SMT - it impinges on teaching and learning, because the pupils must be educated about "good" ICT use, and interacts with the school's behaviour policy etc. It is not a job for the IT staff (or ICT co-ordinator) alone. 3) For any AUP to work it must have buy-in from the school leadership otherwise how will a) you get staff/pupils to agree to it and b) enforce it? Hence point 2.

DfES strategy is managed services. However someone will still have to do the work and if schools IT provision is outsourced TUPE will surely apply. You might end up working for someone else, but hey, that's life.

If you are using SINA to manage URLs then you are a BGfL Plus full proxy school and you filtering is provided by Plus (ie Netmedia/My Schools Internet) and managed by YOU and NOT the BGfL. The change in filtering occurred because Netmedia upgraded their filtering from V3 to V4.1. BGfL currently do not provide a delegated filtering service, though one is currently being tested. They are also working towards Becta accreditation which specifies a 4 hour turn aroung for filtering requests. Filtering can be a matter of contention as it ALWAYS has to err on the side of caution, but is necessary for reasons of child protection. Moving to another provider has significant ramifications in terms of cost (Birmingham schools are currently provided with 10Meg leased lines), meeting DfES/Becta requirements for broadband and MIS services. It is a decision that cannot be undertaken lightly and must be made by the school's senior management team once they have been fully appraised of all the facts. May I suggest that you, or your Head Teacher, contact the BGfL Network Services team to discuss your specific issues.
