Except those Members of the EU Parliament will be importing their hoovers from overseas to ensure their houses don't suffer. Not that the political class do their own hoovering anyway. We're absolute mugs in Europe to suffer this lot and the political class in general. Long overdue a revolution of some kind.

Interesting that the Ukrainian SU-25 is coming into play now and was apparently 'near' the Malaysian 777 when it was shot down. I Don't think for one minute that this aircraft is responsible for bringing down the jetliner. Its a ground attack aircraft and is probably barely capable of getting above 10,000ft with a warload. In fact service ceiling is listed at around 20,000ft clean. It does have a very basic air to air system. More likely the SAM operator went for the Su25 and got the 777 instead.

Agree IT has just become a way to earn money and nothing else. Must admit there was genuine excitement in the late 90s to early 2000s as far as hardware goes. But I'll admit part of this was due to knowing that if you managed to rescue an old system that someone had discarded, it was often worth a few hundred quid in your pocket because you would always have an eager buyer. These days, its all a bit...how the youngsters would say....meh. Have no interest in the latest kit and especially mobile phones.

This was always going to be the likely scenario for a global nuclear war. Localised conflict in some godforsaken part of Eastern Europe or Arabia. Escalated to non nuclear conflict between Russia and the West. Further escalated to small nuclear weapons being used in the region purely against military targets. And then the ultimate escalation to long range ballistic missiles being fired across the globe against 'strategic' targets. Ie London, New York, Moscow. A chilling but hopefully unlikely scenario. Putin is looking at the West as being divided and militarily impotent. We've made massive cutbacks and the likes of ourselves gambled massively in axing aircraft carriers before the new ones are even delivered. Trust me, Russia is in no great shape militarily either. Funds are low, serviceability of equipment poor and numbers of what they posses often exaggerated. However they probably do have the stomach for a fight to 'reinvent' the USSR and Warsaw Pact. Whether we have the stomach to stop them is another matter.

If this is traced back to Russia then surely the minimum that must happen is for massive sanctions to be imposed. Ie take the World Cup away from Russia and freeze their assets. Sadly a military response is never going to be the answer. Will end up in global nuclear conflict. And that, comrade, is gonna put us all into a world of sh@t.....

Did users notice the increase in performance?

Hi all We have some older kit still in front line. These include HP dc7600's which are P4 HT 3ghz, 3Gb RAM running Windows 7. Obviously they are starting to show their age now, especially from login to a stable desktop. In general they are just used for SIMS, Office 2010, Active Inspire and non graphical intensive apps. Has anyone else had any joy in giving similar aged kit a turbo charge with an SSD drive? Cheers

Don't think whether we play the long ball game or passing matters. Its all about nous, being able to think on your feet and remain cool under pressure. England teams were often out played in the past but got through mainly due to the above. Cameroon and Belgium in 1990, Spain in 1996 immediately spring to mind. Even qualifying for 1990 was no mean feat as we were totally outplayed in Poland but held our nerve and had self belief that we would prevail. England's footballers and recently cricketers have become like robots. And robots win nothing.

Gerrard has arguably been the biggest let down of the so called 'golden generation'. Even during his prime, he often went missing when England needed him the most. Lampard was often the fall guy for England failings in midfield where as Gerrard for some reason escaped criticism.

Hi we currently use some SSD based netbooks as VDI clients for Junior school pupils. Currently Win7 is installed on these and they are domain based. One problem is slow logon time from power on to VDI desktop. Was wondering if anyone else has managed to come up with an alternative solution. Ie lightweight Linux based O/S which boots to a browser which can be set as the homepage for VDI login? Any ideas or suggestions welcome!

Hi All Traditionally to chkdsk and repair a non booting hard disk we insert the Win 7 DVD, boot from that, select command line and then chkdsk /f from there. We now encrypt our laptop hard disks using Bitlocker. When booting from the Win 7 DVD we select command line but theres no sign of the c drive at all. Presume bitlocker is hiding it somehow? Anyone faced this scenario? Cheers

Interesting stuff. At what point to you start to install serious discipline? Too early and its seen as 'unfair'. Too late and its seen as 'unfair' because the discipline suddenly comes as a shock and should have been administered earlier. Obviously a gradual increase in discipline is ideal but humans develop at different rates so you cannot apply the same levels of inertia to everyone. By the way I'm not a parent and have no interest in being one. However I do care about society as a whole and what we reap is what we sow!

And at what point in life do they begin to realise that vandalism is not acceptable? 15? 25? 35? This is the problem. We're constantly making excuses for 'kids' yet wonder why by adulthood they are totally unprepared for the real world.

Not sure if anyone has seen the new 'Cosmos' series, but there was an excellent article on how they discovered the very fact that lead poisoning was even in existence. The original task was to find out how old the Earth is. That they discovered. But another spin off of this was that they also discovered the fact that the levels of lead in the environment were extremely high. As for statistics, when theres politics involved, can they ever be trusted? The Beeching report was the most obvious example of how to fabricate figures to suit your agenda. Ensure that main line trains from London no longer connect with the branch line services that you want closed. And lets ensure that monitoring is done during the middle of the day and not during the peak hours. The nett result? Figures that show considerably less passenger usage than if you had been totally impartial.

Personally I think society was more violent 30-40 years ago. You only have to look at footage from the terraces to see that thousands of young men would be out rucking every week. My dad also backs up the theory that going back 30-50 years most pubs were generally pretty rough places to be. Was a case of fighting your way in and fighting your way out in some areas. Mugging was not so popular back then because people simply didn't have anything worth mugging from. However what I would say is that the escalation of the Summer riots in 2011 came as no surprise to me. Whilst someone has mentioned that the Police may now be more of a para-military arm of the government, they were also shown up as lacking control of the streets during this period. Whatever the reasons for people feeling the need to riot, for the first two nights the Police failed to have any control over what was a motley collection of pseudo-gangsters and bored schoolkids. Whether you point your finger at the guys on the ground or their superiors is anyone's guess.

Every society has its handful of nutcases and morons. Wasn't a baby left for dead in a street in China at some point last year? This from a society which has capital punishment and very strict ethics. I hated school, hated my parents for frog marching me to the school gates, took solace in listening to rebellious music. But would I have ever dreamed of laying a hand on my parents, teachers etc? No!!

Yes of course we all know that society, and that includes parents and schools have cultivated an entire generation that are not prepared for the real World that lays ahead of them. Especially now that its a global economy and they are up against competitors that have been brought up with a lot more discipline, work ethic and a more realistic sense of expectation. However, no amount of education, compassion or discipline can prevent random acts of violence from a human being. Don't want to see stupid kneejerk reactions like 'metal detectors in every school' as some of the press are suggesting. Was what happened here realistically preventable? Maybe. But the problem is do we start locking people away from having 'disturbing pictures' or listening to violent music? I'd have been sectioned years ago for daring to like heavy metal and liking a punch up at football in my youth. Either way, kneejerk is not the way here. And by the way, you can be mentally stable, stab a headmaster to death in broad daylight and be out to re offend in considerably less than a 'life' sentence. Maybe thats the first thing that we have to look at.
