    I have just had the idea of checking edugeek to see if anyone else was having issues with smoothwall support. I logged a call two weeks ago for an issue with our database but have had no contact. I have tried updating the ticket to see if that sparks activity, i can't get through via telephone either. It's a surprise as they have always provided great support - probably one of the best technical support services I have come across. I waited a while for support when Guardian 3 and the new UI came in but I put that down to them being overloaded with upgrade issues. On a completely separate note, I didn't like the new UI changes either! I have used smoothwall for years at various locations and the overall service has always been excellent so I'm willing to overlook teething issues so long as they are resolved and it gets back close to the level it was.

    I have just come to renew the warranty (due in 10 weeks) on one of our Sun / Oracle 7110 appliances and had a shock on the price. I am starting to regret moving away from HP / Dell to be honest who offer differing and more affordable levels of support (unlike Oracle’s one size fits all). It’s been fantastic kit, good build quality, excellent performance for the price and we have had no issues over the past 2 years but these service costs are going to make them very expensive over their lifetime.

    I noticed this error happens about 15 times on a bad day on our 2008 server. We dont seem to be having any problems although i do want to get to the bottom of the warning. Like it has already been said, by not quantifying the acceptable rate of these errors how do you know what is normal -- a bit of a poor event message.

    We have 10 of these printers and have the exact same issue. What a pain having to walk to the other end of the building just to switch them off and on again! When they lock up / go offline we can't get into the web interface or even ping them. Is there any way we could also get that Beta firmware (as we speak we have just got someone calling with this exact problem -- time for a walk). Cheers

    That is how the volume quotas work but with FSRM you can set folder quota. Google Microsoft FSRM see if that is what you are looking for.

    I did the same 2 weeks ago only we use VMWARE. I followed the guide on Configuring the Windows Time Service and it worked fine first time.

    I have decided for this year to present the storage via a virtual Server with FSRM to control the Quotas etc. It's a shame the S7000's do not have these features such as file screening, auditing and a decent quota system - Hopefully they are in the pipeline.

    I doubt the main reason for choosing your 7000 was that it lacked a feature, mine was the quality of kit you get for the price but I understand what you are saying. Everyone wants more storage now and it is a big part of our job policing the available disk space. I would sooner have that administrative headache than a group of users filling all the storage up while I’m away on holiday – and that would probably just be the staff! It works well for us to give 250MB and if they want more they have to come and see us so we can pilfer through their user area for games, music and videos. They soon get the message that if they run out of space just delete some of the games or other junk they have. After that we increase in 50MB increments for them if there area is full with legitimate work. What’s annoying is the system is so close to having a decent quota system, for me it’s just lacking a default quota setting. Like Duke said I could live without the rest of the features.

    That is a good idea - I think there is already a bug for this been created but it looks like no action has been taken on it. Bug ID: 6902902 ZFS should support a default setting for user/group quotas I have also just logged a call with sun to see what they say. I will PM my email address now.

    Has anyone managed to get per user quotas working on their 7110 / 7000 series Unified storage systems? I have just bought another 7110 and am trying to get that setup for the users home folders with quotas enabled. I can see how to do quotas manually by typing the windows username in and specifying a quota value – and that works - but I can’t see a default quota value anywhere or a way of applying a quota to a large number of users. It’s going to be an extremely cumbersome interface if you have to add a quota in for all 1500 users for each filesystem individually. I don’t know if im missing something I tested quotas on a group but as I suspected these are cumulative quotas for each member of the group so 250MB on the students AD group would mean all 1200 students share a 250MB quota limit – obviously not going to work! I didn’t really want to present the storage through a Virtual server so I’m leaving that as a last resort. Has anyone got round this by any means? I haven’t looked for scripts to do the task as you’re not supposed to drop into the full console. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Do you not have the funds to use a SAN with your server? Maybe buy two servers so you can move the VMs across the two of them. We done that here and it is amazing. Being able to snap shot is great before updates and configuration changes.

    I think we have a similar setup only we use VMWARE. Before putting the system live we tested your scenario and it all worked fine moving the VM from one ESXi server to the other. To do it we simply had to remove it from the inventory on one server then add it to the inventory of the other - all worked fine - We are too cheap to spring for VMOTION! Ah i've just got your problem we use NFS so no LUNs - D'oh!

    This is an image of our 7110. We have 5 VMs and use CIFS for general shares - It is basically our whole admin network SIMS and all. It is only the disk that ever goes cloudy made me think that the caching drives might of solved that. Performance is great though I was pleased it only went as far as cloudy. I could of course (to make myself feel better) change the threshold settings to get all Sunshine - I might not know what's going on but at least it would look nice!

    Thanks garethedmondson, That Adobe support is terrible - just wish we didn't need the software! I don't know about transferring the license. Adobe support suggested I go on Amazon and buy a retail copy for like £350 when we are paying £5500 already for the site license. I thought Microsoft Licensing was bad - i take it all back it's relatively excellent! Cheers, Steve.

    Hi, don’t know if anyone can help. We need to buy Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium – this includes Photoshop and Dream weaver that we need. They only do it in a school site license for ~£5500 for 500 licenses. Our problem is that we have a large number of machines that will not run CS4 (the latest version) but only say CS2. Does anyone know how you can get hold of the older media? I have asked Adobe twice but their stock answer is they only sell CS4 and can’t help. I have tried our resellers but they can maybe get CS3 but no earlier than that. The Adobe Licensing Portal is poor when you compare it to the Microsoft one with product downloads etc. Thanks, Steve.

    This old chestnut! I’ve had fun and games like this before. I’ve fixed it a number of ways in the past by updating WLAN drivers, checking the settings in the BIOS and enabling its WOL features. Another one was power options on the card in device manager. One in particular was laptops with old Intel WLAN cards for them I had to use their utility that comes with Intel Pro Wireless software. You can use it so it takes control at login and you get a verbose of what’s going on. So, searching for network… found network … authenticating …lgetting IP … looking for Domain Controller. That works great – one catch though it has to be an Intel card! Like I said earlier your best bet is looking at the option for the card in the BIOS and also the options in Device Manager for that card. And obviously get the latest version of the driver – which you probably already have I would imagine. Good luck!

    We had a similar issue where our site was wildly varying in the Google rankings. No Errors in the webmaster tools etc. Basically a nightmare with no where to turn! We got our ranking at the top by submitting a Google maps entry and verifying our entry by getting them to send the post card etc. Now when you search you get our result at the top with a nice map etc. Not saying it will definitely work for you – just did for us.

    Is your time wrong on your computer? You could get certificate error if someone is performing a Man in the Middle attack on you and presenting you with a forged certificate. I wouldn’t login if the certificate has an error on it.

    I have just set two up today You don’t put the http:// in (well I didn’t today) so:- 24hrsschool.scholname.xx.sch.uk In the server name field - the rest of the field are very self explanatory. I had had problems with the newer of the iPhone (had a later version of v3). It would work fine over 3G but not over the wireless. Because we use a firewall i had to make it IP an exception to get it working in the end. Mine has been syncing well for months email cal and contacts

    I had the same problem and have just used your URL to fix the problem. For me it’s a sneeky tick box on the per group settings page. I selected our students group, clicked “select” and i ticked the enable flash filtering box. However I’d forgotten to also tick the "Override Default ...." tick box. I tested your URL before this setting change and it worked fine. I ticked the override box and it was blocked. The game did work at first but that was because it was cached. I’ll blame you now when the students come in. Oh and i know it was the flash filter because the site was allowed and loaded but the flash game had a big "Blocked" logo over it. Hope that helped.

    SharePoint would be a way to go to get a personalised view for each person logging in. All depends on what type of information you want to personalise. We use sharepoint 2007 to do this and use it as our VLE. I’m not sure what you are looking for but you could also write you own web app if you are familiar with PHP or similar. It will have to be hosted internally otherwise users will have to logon twice - Once to the computer and then once to the website. Internally you can easily get the logon name of the user to be used in your web app - or easily query AD. You could easily do something whereby you use GP to push out a different home page to different groups of people – it all depends on how much work you are looking to put into it.

    Is it is just powering off does it blue screen before it reboots? You need to go in to “System Properties”, “Startup and Recovery” and untick the option to automatically restart. You could wait then and watch to see if there is a blue screen with some information you can use to diagnose the problem. Depending on the configuration of you server you should be getting some dump files you can use to determine what is causing the error (minidump folder). Usually however the stop error (blue screen) would be in the system log - but it’s worth a go. Also you may want to go into your servers bios and look for a log section – if it is a decent enough bios it will have any issues relating to hardware / heat issues. May give you a clue.

    Yep I'll keep posting any issues etc. As we installed our kit we have documented everything in depth for our Disaster recovery plan. Once we tidy that up I’ll post it along with schematics - obviously with sensitive information omitted but someone may find it useful.
