I have been looking into replacing our Tape library with a Disk solution. We already have the Commvault software and Licensing to do it. I was looking at a Case today that held 24 Sata drives and had a 1000W Power Supply. I would love to build 4 of them and fill them with 2TB drives. Just started to look into it. I am going to try and Get 1 of the servers built with 24 500 or 1TB drives to see how well it work. Use Windows storage server but have also been thinking of going with ZFS and Open Solaris. Has anyone done anything with such a large number of drives? I priced out a DIT system today for about 42K US dollars that had 4 4U servers with a Total of 96 2TB WD Sata drives.

How about storing them at a local bank in a safe deposit box on the schools dime. Then at the very least you are only responsible for the transport to and from and the bank has probably already made sure that they can survive fire/flood/etc. I suppose this will not work if you are talking more then half a dozen or so Tapes.

The GPO works when the user logs on. I was expecting it to fill out the AD part on its own. Not sure if it makes a difference. I will test with the app my users need and see if it causes any issues. Hopefully not.

I am trying to use a GPO to fill in the profile path and the home folder path for Terminal services profile Tab in AD on a server 2003 SP2. I created a GPO and set the following policy's Set path for TS Roaming Profiles Enabled Profile path \\10.2.8.22\profiles\profile1.man Do not append the user name to the profile path Enabled TS User Home Directory Enabled Location: On the network Hor Dir Root path \10.2.8.22\home\%user% If home drive is on network, specify drive letter for the mapped drive. Drive letter M: I linked a OU to the policy and set it to Enforced and link enabled. I added the OU to the security filtering section. When I create a new user the fields are still not being filled in. This is my first GPO so I am unsure if I am missing something or if it is something else.

Does anyone use anything in particular to keep track of licensing? We use a spreadsheet now but I would like to find something more robust. Something where we can store Lic #, Amounts Total, Amt Used, Tech support # and contacts , etc.

Has anyone tried to use server 2008R2 for the Datastore of a Xenapp 5 Farm. I am aware that R2 will not work for the other components of the farm but was wondering if the Datastore would work on R2. I plan on using SQL server 2008 x64.

This weekend we are going to be doing some reconfiguring of our Switches and was thinking it may be a good time to play with some settings. I was thinking all of our switches ( Cisco 3750-E) Support full duplex and I think most of our servers do as well ( Proliant DL 360's and 380's G1-G6s as well as a rack of Bl460c) Should I manually set the ports on the switches and the Nics in the boxes to full duplex or should I just leave them at auto. I have read mostly positive things saying yes to set everything to full and I would get better performance. Just wanted to get a feel for how everyone else was doing it

I am creating a farm and am have got to the point where it is creating a new Data Source to SQl Server.. When I click on the " What SQL Server do you want to connect to? " Drop down I see a list of SQL servers in my network but not the one I created My Instructions say "Select the data store database. If you are using a Microsoft SQL Server select Use the following database on a separate database server, and select the database from the list. If your driver does not appear on the list, cancel Setup, install the driver, and then restart Setup. " What driver is it I need to install? I may have missed this in the guide. Is the driver installed on the SQL box or the XenApp box or both? I am installing on Server 2008 VMware VM's non R2 . The SQL is SQL 2008 With SP1I created the database on the SQL box already. I used Mixed mode auth. I am installing logged in as a Domain admin .

Hello all I am playing with Citrix and have ordered some books but they are 3 weeks out I want to build a Citrix XenApp 5 server farm with windows 2008. Anyone have a decent guide for doing something like this. Citrix documentation is all over the place and has not been much help. Like do I install sql server first on datastore or will Citrix prompt me to. I assume I install and create a DB called datastore

I have tried to do it with the AAM but it seems that it adds the ports to the AAM that I create. Can I just have all of the site collections run off of port 80?

I have some more info. I have been working with my load balanver and I have been able to kind of do what I want except I can't get it to work with sites that have a port number on them. I am still learning this Sharepoint and IIS stuff but when our person creates new sites in Sharepoint they get a address like site.Ralph.org:1806 and the users have to hit that url with the port to get to the site. I assume somewhere in SP I can make it so they can just hit site.ralph.org with no port at the end?

Hello all I am typically a hardware guy but I have been given the task of getting sharepoint site load balanced I am pretty sure I have most of it but.... Should my Sharepoint admin have it setup so that when I connect to the frontends address it takes me right to the sharepoint page where I log in and then iis takes me where I need to go So say I have a web frontend that is 192.168.1.98 Should it be setup so 192.168.1.98 takes me right to the sharepoint login or is it supposed to have :port /site name after the IP I am asking because I am unsure if i need to setup my LB to redirect to just the IP or the IP with the site. Right now if I hit 192.168.1.98 I just get a IIS7 logo I need to hit the IP with the port and site to get into sharepoint Our Sharepoint person is also not a iis person. We all wear many different hats.

I am adding 2000 users to our AD and into our SP Farm. When I add them to Ad I am checking to have them change password on first login. When the users login to Sharepoint it does not prompt them to change there password. They are not going to be logging in to the domain on any boxes just thru Sharepoint. Is there a way to get Sharepoint to prompt them to change password on first login. I am not a Sharepoint person so I apologize if this is very simple. I was told that Sharepoint creates there accounts from the OU I created in AD and that we are going to handle password resets for sharepoint thru AD so I assume if Sharepoint prompts the user to change password it will replicate that change in AD?

We have Proliant gear here and usually do something like Raid 1+0 on the First 2 drives and Install the OS on that. Raid 5 on the rest of the drives that gets 2 partitions 1 Swap which is 1.25X Ram 1 Data Partition where anything other then OS is installed. I am thinking with the new G6 series we have coming with 16GB of ram that we don't need such large swap. Just curious how others setup.

I have used a app called wsname in the past that can pull info from the bios as well as other places I used a txt file that named the computer based on its mac address But I do seem to recall it could use other system variables as well. I just set it as a runonce before I sysprepped or imaged. I do not think it will also change sid but it saved me hours of work. It was also nice because I would keep a txt file with all my machine mac address and names so when I needed to I could just tell a bunch of machines in a lab to hit the program and they would all rename Workstation Name Changer. Not 100

Do some server 2008R2 builds and our Commvault agents are not compatible with R2 yet. Has anybody used Server 2008R2 built in backup utility yet. Going to try and use that see how it does against the other solutions out there. The R2 servers are going to house a Sharepoint farm with a SQL cluster

Hello all I have been asked to take on a project in our Data center that has about 500 servers mixed Blade,VM and HP Pizza Box. Most are Windows 2003 and Netware. We have a bunch of schools who connect to the servers for School management and other services. I have not done much server management and have asked to connect to all the Windows machines and run something like belarc that will save a bunch of info. Check the event logs for any major issues. make sure the IP address and names are still correct and all patches were up to date ( Most get from a wsus server) Is this possible with 1 piece of software. I was going to get help but the person training me is not available for a few weeks and I would like to get started. Any other things I should be looking and keeping track of. We have all the passwords and usernames as well as up to date AV on all the boxes. Any recommendations for decent software to manage software licenses. Open source is always a plus.
