Where I used to be, the HT was on 95k+, and a *large* number of teaching staff were on 50-70 and up. I was on 18k, then 20k, and the rest of the IT staff were on 10-16k. We went back and forth a lot on this - always we had the 'we pay well for the area' argument thrown at us. Well yes, it's a deprived rural area - but when you can earn more shelf-stacking in the Tesco's down the road. No money for training, no money for payrises - yet year on year the HT got his payrise (over 100k by now I'd imagine) and the teachers paychecks got fatter and fatter. I did have to control my reaction to a department head telling me, with a straight face, that 'if I wanted money, I wouldnt be in teaching' - pray tell what - bank robbery? Same dept head also justified the reason for the abysmal pay for technicians by saying we 'werent paid to think' Guess what department? ICT teacher.

I must admit I picked up a lot - but not sure if it was from the students, or the vast numbers of staff for whom washing hands after using the toilet seems optional to. I'd go in, sit down to go - hear someone else come in, go, flush and straight back out the door into circulation. The exception were those who actually washed

Do bear in mind also that there's often a 'glass ceiling' only a thousand or two above your starting pay. Once you hit the top of that 'pay spine' thats prettymuch 'it' - no TLRs, no prospect to move upward etc. Not impossible for a technician to start on 10k, move up to 16k, and remain on that 16k for the next umpteen years, regardless of skills aquired etc

Hm - localzuk, drop me a PM. Our place used to do this as part of the Technology College remit - provide IT Support to the local feeder sites. Quite possibly the most insane time-sink I've ever seen, some of them needing vast amounts of investment/work at that point. Some of my guys have a lot of knowledge of the systems of some of the local feeders - can give you an idea of what you may be letting yourself in for.

I'm sure some kind of painless dart gun could be used, to tag them unawares in the wilds of the staffroom

Grumbledook, what did it actually take to get this in place? I'd love to get this kind of procedure and accountability implemented at my work - the resistance to it thus far has been rather odd. Usually, it's either that the departmental budgets are too small to absorb this kind of damage-billing, and thus IT support's budget is used for it. In other instances, the damage occurs during registration periods, when the departments refuse to take responsibility for the damage and theft that occurs. While finance is well aware of the amount of money we waste on new keyboards, mice, etc, and have all the figures to support this, the SMT make all the right noises when this is brought up as an issue, but when push comes to shove, it's quietly dropped. I'm really not sure why, as it's undeniably a chronic waste of money, but the feeling seems to be that it's what the IT Support budget is for, so why bother shifting things around? Any convincing points or leverage that you utilised to get this in place at your site would be most useful! (Aside from the cost issue, it's horribly depressing/demoralizing for the team to have to replace items day after day, with the teaching staff standing idly by when damage occurs, knowing full well that the same mice will be gone within a week, again)

Never heard of this before I'm afraid - the only references I come up with are links to the site from someone's signature file on the Sysinternals forums. Same persons signature links to http://www.certdok.co.uk/ - which is in a similar state. Personally, I'd tread carefully.

I'd like to offer a word of warning - as you're local! I know your site is different from ours - but we have had a *lot* of thefts here, something on the order of 30k over 1.5 years or so. (PM me if you want more detail) - but do be careful - lot of opportunists in our neck of the woods! As for why you dont hear much about it in the local paper....

Suprised they didnt throw a fit as a result - here we're all referred to as 'the technician' or 'the techie' - usually to our face, in the same room. (eg, teacher to child 'Go and see the techies about that' *points*) The times when I have come up against teaching staff, either reminding them to avoid bad practice or similar it's devolved into a 'how dare you talk to me like that in front of the children/talk to me like that in general' match very fast.

We have the login/HTTPS side of ebay blocked, after several students were found to be selling pirated software/music/whatever on it, and using the college supplied email addresses as points of contact. Several irate buyers contacted the college directly as a result, which led to the blocking.

None - non-teaching staff arent allowed to be issued that kind of thing here. Only when we had a managment change were we allowed to upgrade our desktops (2 for 5 people at one point) from AMD K6's
