Thin Clients - Load Balancing
linescanner replied to wesleyw's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
MS NLB should be band of the face of the planet. It causes more issues than it solves. If you have good quality switches, NLB will go potty and just about pack up. 2x is the only thing we have found to be reliable. Had a chat with a 3COM engineer the other day and he pretty much said the same thing. -

Aruba wireless is excellent. A number of our Customers have had it put in by a good company recently. It is cheaper than Cisco, but has all the bells an whistles -
Give me a call on 07983616419 It is difficult to give a ballpark figure without knowing what you want to achieve Regards Andy Some reason my sending a PM is not working

Running SIMs on a thin client....
linescanner replied to UKNGroup's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
We have all our Sun Ray and SGD schools running SIMS via SGD and Sun Ray Does work quite nicely -
Stewart, where abouts in Cumbria are you ? I think the nearest I have to you is Rochdale (still a bit of a trek)
-
Not Barry It will be at Billericay who have 400 Sun Ray and SGD
-
We are in the process of arranging an open day at one of our schools. It looks as if it going to be on the 8th of November. If anyone is interested please drop me a line.
-
Just as a note. Sun are running Matching Grant at the moment and that will run until 20th Dec 2007. The programme is buy 1 get 1 free which will allow you to deploy a good system at a fraction of the cost. We work with European Electronique and have deployed most of their Sun Ray and SGD installs over the summer period.

Dan, you can get me on [email protected] or call me in the morning on 07983616419 Regards Andy

I am not a NetBSD guy but php5-mbstring may be an addition package to install.
-
You need to have php compiled with mbstring. --enable-mbstring as an option if building from source. The explodeping thing is that your network is not allowing the module to connect to the outside
-
has php been compiled with mbstring ? #php -m | grep mbstring As for the first error try and remove the expoldeping folder from mods. Put it somewhere outside the mods folder

What base OS What version of php What version of Elgg post your config.php

You got any extra modules running ?

What base OS What version of php What version of Elgg Let me know that and I can have a better idea

Lets not loose site of the real issues here. A VLE is a VLE is a VLE. They all have good points and bad. Where the real killer is, is in the content and the way it can be used to engage the learner. I think a lot of areas have lost site of this to an extent. I think if BECTA and the DFES spent money on providing core quality cross VLE compatible content, most of this "mine is better than yours" argument goes away. As Tony pointed out, I think teaching teachers to produce "QUALITY" content is key. Educate them to provide engaging content and then who cares what VLE you run it on. Content is King

Email/web-server - how do you do... it?
linescanner replied to beermouse's topic in How do you do....it?
Personally I would have gone for Ubuntu Postfix Cyrus Mailscanner Apache2 Spamassassin ClamAV Joomla Squirrelmail PHP5 MySQL But hey, mailservers are mailservers. Should just work. The above combination has been deployed by us for 35,000 users. -
I do agree with kerrymoralee9280. You have to be comfortable running and support servers. A VLE is now classed in a lot of schools as mission critical. You need to be happy supporting the base OS. In a straight fight on performance Moodle on *nix wins however if it is then down for a week at the first sign of issues then.................. The learning curve to support *nix web servers is however not that steep so I would suggest that looking into *nix as a web platform is a good investment in time and effort.
-
Is that not again, a matter of opinion. I much prefer installing 2003 with IIS6 and find it easier. It is not a matter of opinion about the performance, moodle on *nix will run better than on windows once it gets under real load. Your preference is about comfort of use, not performance.

A lot of the scaling docs out there are based around corporate usage. ICT in schools is the most hostile environment to deploy thin client and is way away from the coporate usage models used to write the white papers. Work on a 30:1 ratio on a server that has Dual Procs (Dual Dual core is best) 4 GB RAM Disk requirement is small (centrally hold you TS profiles) Due to the packages running in modern schools you are more likely to become processor bound than run out of memory. More procs is good. Over 4 GB RAM is not the best way to go. Our recommendation would be to look at Sun Ray and SGD should you want to invest further in thin client. However the Citrix route is also perfectly viable. The danger of trying to run too many users off each box is that the thin clients will get bad press. It is not a fault of thin client computing, just under provisioning. It may set your cause back a long way if the end users experience suffers by trying to do too much with too little. ---------------------------------------------- As I am my employer these comments do reflect the views of my employer
